how many of you plan on having children and being a stay at home mom? FH and I have talked about it - and we will be moving to Florida so that we can afford to live off just his salary so that I can stay at home when I have a baby. Of course nothing is guaranteed but if we stay in Staten Island it will take us awhile to afford the kind of house we would like and even with FH making over 100K it would be really difficult for us to pay a mortgage and our bills and baby expenses so I would have to continue working especially since our families do not and will not be able to help us out financially. But anyways, my biggest fear is that FH will resent me for being home while he is out working. We've talked about it so many times - and he realizes how much work a baby and keeping up a house could be and says that on occasion he might get jealous but that he would never hold it against me because he wants me to be home.....but to be honest, if I had to work and FH got to stay home I would be really jealous of him! Any opinions? Anyone stay at home now? Or plans to when they have children?

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
There is NO WAY on earth I would NOT stay home. There is nothing more important, in my mind, than raising my own children. I will give up whatever is necessary in order to be able to do so.
FH agrees, and, I'm sure there are days when he will be jealous, but, it's really what we both want.
Once they are in school, I'll go back to work.
This is something I feel really strongly about, so, that's why it might sound harsh!

we've definitly talked about it, but it really all depends on where we are financially at that time.

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
FH and I discuss this all the time. He wants me to be a stay at home mom, and I agree. I dont want to miss any part of my babys life. I mean once they're in school full time, then thats different I can go back to work. Even if its part time (cause yes I do get bored at home after a while) But I want to be able to watch my baby grow up, take its first steps, hear their first words. I dont want some nanny or day care center to witness them first. and my parents are probably going to work until the day they die b/c they need the money. FH brings home a nice salary a year, and its only getting bigger, so once we're ready for kids. I think we'll be ready financially to allow me to do just that

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
I would personally go crazy.
I need to be around colleagues and be mentally stimulated everyday. Not to say that staying home with my own child isn't completely rewarding and satisfying....but i just think that I need to work.
I applaud everyone that stays at home. My mother did...and I am SOOOO thankful that I saw her every single day of my childhood.

It's funny... FH and I were just talking about this. He really would like for me to stay home... I'm alllll for that. We'll see if, when the time comes, we can swing that.

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
I would love to stay home. I didn't have that and I would love for nothing more than to be able to give that to my children.
it will depend on finances and living situations, etc. We decided that we will not stay on LI and struggle. If us moving to another state means a better living for us and I canstay home with our kids, we will do that. But, nothing is set in stone yet.

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
Would love to be a stay at home mom. I already told FH I want to live in a big house, with a big backyard, inground pool and in a gated community hehehehehe.
He said he is working on it hehehehe

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
I don't think that we can afford for me to stay at home and I never really figured it into my plans. I guess I'm not too worried because my mother has already agreed to retire and make watching my children her only priority and that makes me comfortable with the idea of having to work

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
I really wanted to. I've been saying it forever but I graduate in may and now i really want to do what I'm getting my degree in. Maybe years down the line I will be a SAHM but I worked too hard for my degree to do it any time soon

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
Im torn. We plan on me staying home until they are school age, but the idea of not working kinda makes me sad.But who knows so many things can change. I have been working since i was 15 years old, the thought of not working kinda scares me. But i do realize that taking care of children and home is a job withing itself. I know i want my kids to have a happy childhood. so i guess whatever it takes for that is what we will end up doing.

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
that is a good topic to bring up and ask about- we have discussed this and it is decided that I will be staying home to care for my children and once they are old enough I will consider going back to work- i get bored easily I was out of work for a whole year due to traveling with FH and even though it was a cool experience you do get bored but at least with a bigger responsiblity of rasiing your own children and watching them grow we will all be well occupied, also I am an over protective person so I would prefer to watch my own child.

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
I think in an ideal world I would work part-time, or work from home 2 days a week. I would like to work but I also would like the ability to provide the majority of the care for my children. I'm not sure what will happen, though

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
I am not going to be a SAHM - luckily my mom is retired and she would watch my kids so i dont have to worry about daycare etc.
but i think that any new experience will need some time for adjustment. Maybe he will resent you for staying home or you will resent him for going out and leaving you every day. Maybe I will resent Anthony when I have to drop off my kids at my mom's every day.
But you have a strong relationship and you will get through it and appreciate each other in the end

Re: NWR: stay at home Mom
My sister has a 4 month old and is staying at home indefinitely. They bought a house in Rockland county, and it is a little less expensive to live up there, but its still the NY Metro area. Finances are tight, but she is happy. If her husband ever thought he worked harder, that all went away when she left him alone with the baby for just 5 hours on a Saturday when she went shopping! He was totally exhausted after only 5 hours and couldn't wait for her to get home!
