I feel like today's everyone's day to vent ... seems like there have been a lot of them.
Anyhow, I am pretty upset about my job and just wanted to vent about it all to you girls. I do not think anyone else would understand.
I have worked for 2 years at a large online co on LI. Don't want to say which in case anyone from the co is on here. In July I began a new position with the co. I was offered after asking for a promotion and bneing told that although I might get it (I definitely deserved it), the person who really needed to approve it wasn't giving the signals that I was going to, and even if I did, it would probably just mean more money, not a change in duties. Who wants to just make more money doing the same things you've been doing? At first it would've been fine, probably, but I would have gotten bored after a few months, I'm sure.
So I took this new thing. I have no real experience in this area but was able to get my feet wet, so to speak, in my old position as we often worked with the guy who is now my boss. It sounded great: get to work in a temporary office that is in the same town as I live now, get to wear jeans almost everyday, very laid back, more money, and I get to learn something new, which everyone thought I'd be great at.
However ... it's turning out to be not as good. I am more of an office manager than what I was told, I do a lot of invoicing and have to learn all these accounting procedures that I had no intention of doing. Math was not my strong subject, and now I am responsible for the dept getting paid. Stressful. I am viewed by some people that my boss works with (in and out of the company) as not having a purpose, I think, or as a secretary - and while I am supposed to have real responsibilities, and coordinate a lot of what we do, I am often left out of email correspondences and out of the loop. Maybe this is because I really have no experience in the position, but regardless, if that is my job, people should respect it - and I feel that they are not. (My boss has had to tell one guy many times to include me on correspondence, and he very rarely does.)
To top it off - this same guy who refuses to include me in the goings on HUMILIATED me while we were working on a project, in front of clients and others. I was trying to help but apparently he thought I was trying to do his job and said, very loudly, 'Jenn, I'll do that.'
I feel like my boss is sensing some of this, but not much. I feel like I want to tell him how I feel, but part of me feels like it will sound like 'the girl who thinks no one likes her.' That's not it. I don't feel like I am needed very much, and I don't feel that I am thought of as someone they need to respect. My boss does respect me and thanks me all the time for what I do - but most of the time I am on LIW or looking for wedding things online, or looking for jobs :)
I also think I would get upset if I talked to him. I am very emotional. I would *hate* to cry in front of him.
I have hated almost every job I've had. I get bored easily, and it seems that every position I've had could really be a part time one. I don't know why this is. I was a journalism major and haven;t really used my degree. I feel like I should be a copyeditor or a proofreader - I *love* to edit people's letters, menus, street signs ... anything! I just love to make things sound better. I have found some jobs but am afraid to apply -- for one, FH doesn't want me to switch jobs, he thinks I should just stick it out and stay with my co until we move to NH (2 years). He thinks it will look bad that I keep switching jobs. (The longest I've held one is like 2 years 9 months) I worry aboutnthat a bit, but not as much as having a job I like.
The co I work for now requires you to work long hours certain times of the year and doesn't pay very well, so if I was going to look for something else, I'd want to leave - but maybe it would better for my resume to look for something else within the company??? I would love to work at a college or school district, editing their publications ....
To top it all off, I threw my back out on Sunday and it's still killing me. Nothing helps - heating pads, advil, doans, icy/hot patches .... sleeping is such a pain because laying down is when it hurts the most.
ANYHOW>>>> I know this is crazy long. Thank you to anyone who got through any part of it. I feel better now.

It's really up to you.
I wouldn't bounce around if I were you. It just shows instability and that you're easily bored (which you are).
Personally, I would stick it out for two years.
Then again, I think I'm pretty cynical and never expect to find a job I love.

Sorry you are going through a tough time.
It's hard to find the perfect job. But for me I hate being new so I tend to stay in the same place until it's long overdue that I make a change.
Good luck, you will get through this.

Thanks guys
I think I have been easily bored at my jobs because I am not challenged and because the responsibilities don't change .... I don't know, maybe all jobs are like that? I feel like the situations are the same all the time and that there's no challenges to make me work harder -- except those that make you want to pull your hair out.
I think maybe I will see what else is available at my company. I just do not think what I am doing now is for me.

Exactly how I feel. I feel like almost every job succks.
Sometimes when I get bored, I make new projects for myself. So if you're at a small company - research ways for them to save money, streamline their business, build new vendor relationships.
If you're at a large company, do the same. Suggest that they shut of the lights in conference rooms when not in use. Sometimes little things make a difference.
If they don't recycle, look into recycling plants - for paper, cans and bottles, etc... Some recycling companies will pick up for free.

Can I just not work instead???? How about that???
I would love to work from home ..... a dream ......

honestly i was reading that most ppl now stay at jobs a short period of time and move on looking for something better, this is why companies are trying to do more for employee's to get them to stay longer. 2 years and 9 months is not bad at all...PLUS you said you want to go into another field and I think theywould understand if you said listen, i havent really used my degree and i am ready to get into this field. Definitely do what makes you happy, and find something that is more in the field you are looking for.

That is what I told FH -- a lot of people do not stay at jobs very long anymore. He works at a body shop, and he is AWESOME at what he does -- but he doesn't quite get the corporate world and I understand that.
Thanks Denise! I think I am going to look for new jobs.

yeah its very common now to change jobs every 2 years infact. Plus like i said, if you go into a different field you have a great excuse as to why you left your last job.
Try a recruiter, this way you can tell them you want to make X amount of dollars and they wont give you anything for less, you know how sometimes you go in for an interview and they wont tell you how much you'd be making and of course you can't ask-well at least you won't have to deal with that. If you want try snelling personnel, its downtown manhattan and ask for dawn

Sorry you are having issues at work. One thing I can tell you from experience in hiring people, most employers will look at how long you have held jobs and the reason for switching. If you are making lateral moves, that doesn't look great to potential employers. A resume is an initial impression and the impression it gives is instability. But here's the other side of that. If you are moving from job to job and increasing your responsibilities and moving up, it can show initiative and your willingness to grow. I would keep that in mind when looking for a new job.

Re: NWR: Vent (Long, sorry)
Thanks guys. I haven't made many lateral moves ... one was in a different field and was a lot lower that the position I left, but I had moved to a nonprofit so I think that's expected (last time I'd work for one of those! Unless they are HUGE like the american cancer soc. or something).
I have a lot to think about I guess. A recruiter is a good idea. I would like to stay on Long Island though - I know that limits my search and salary somewhat, but it's been working ok for me and I have found that I like my life a lot more when I am not commuting to NYC. :) I'm not much of a city girl, don't like the crowds and the busyness.

That's true, I think I read that many people change companies on average every 5 years and our generation will work in 3-4 different fields before we retire. The thing is we really don't have much motivation to stay at the same place. You can just roll over your retirement fund when you change jobs.
I just got my pension info and it tells me the amount I'll make when I retire at age 65. SIXTY-FIVE!!!! I'm in my mid twenties that's about 40 years doing the same thing! I'm sure I'll be ready for a change by then. LOL

There are tons of recruiters that focus on LI. Also check craigslist. It is very common to change jobs every few years and like Denise said companies are trying hard to keep retention up. I am like you and have only stayed at a job for just over 2 years. And like you said, you aren't being challenged enough makes you bored so that is a big reason why you want to be some place else and that's what you need to tell those companies. (Don't bash your current company, just say you're looking for new challenges that they aren't offering you)

Thanks. The very thought of launching a job search makes me cringe .... I *hate* looking for a job. It's so tedious and annoying and time consuming! And to think I've done it SOOOOO much! I just wish I could find something I love.
Anyone want to pay me to sing????? I love to sing. That would be my ultimate job. But that's about as hard to come by as landing a top role in the next Tom Cruise movie, so I better start coming up with real ideas .... :)

Oh, meant to ask, if anyone can suggest LI recruiters, let me know. I don't really think I know the difference between a recuiter and a staffing company .....

I can totally relate to how you feel..that's why i'm currently unemployed and looking for a new job now..lol. I get bored really easily.. the only job i've ever wanted to stick with was bartending and i think its because even though the job is basically the same day to day.. it's always changing.. people are different, you get your regulars..but there's always something new going on.. It's more casual..and if it's a smaller dive type bar..u are usually ure own boss behind the bar.. the owner may be lurking around..but it's your bar.. your style.. you run the show! I love that. But .. i can't do it forever I've hated probably every other job i've had. I'm great with computers and can learn anything but hate being cooped up in an office all day. I seriously think i should go into wedding planning since i've always loved it anyway..lol. I've bounced around a lot.. sometimes staying at a job for a year or so and then leaving to find something else. So really i can't tell you to stick it out cause i know how you feel. lol.. it's like you have to push yourself to go everyday and you hate it and that feeling $ucks. Maybe try a temp agency... i did that for awhile and it was pretty cool to be in a different environment weekly or daily even. And if you need a few days off you can take them.. the pay is pretty decent and you get to learn a lot of new things. There were weeks where i worked 5 days..and weeks were i worked 2 ..but i liked that..lol. Good luck.. you'll be ok.. eventually you'll find something you love!

Thanks. I hate that feeling of going to work and hating it. I came in today with such a bad attitude. Good thing my boss is still out of town. :) There are so many things I love to do - sing, write, play with dogs, scrapbook ... but none of these things can really make me any $$$$. :) I mean, writing can. But I am terrible at sticking with it - I really feel I am meant to write a book, maybe about my dog, maybe a fiction novel ... but putting pen to paper is SOOO hard and actually liking what I write is even harder. I am my worst critic.
But I think writing is what I am meant to do - but I think it needs to be on my own terms, not at a company. I really need to start working on a book!!!! I would love to write from home and have a job proofreading.
Gotta look on craigslist more!!!!!
Thank you all for your encouragement and nice words. I feel better today than yesterday - might be because I have more work today. :)
