NWR: Your dream job (a realistic one)

Original post by MrsHtobe

Like -

If you could do it all over, what would you be? I don't mean astronauts or movie stars, but a real job that you wish you had chosen instead.

I think I would have been either a nurse or a teacher. (NOT an accountant).

But I don't have the time or money to change that now, so it is what it is.

What would you be?

ETA: Also include what you do now!

I'd like to have been a travel agent, or high-end concierge.

Unfortunately, I'm major gifts fundraiser for nonprofits. Long hours, no overtime.

Veterinarian

Although I do believe movie star or singer are realistic jobs...

Yes, for some people it may be. I think I meant a job you would seriously consider as an adult, not something you necessarily dreamed about as a little kid, before you knew what it really entailed, etc.

I see what you mean. But for me its something I dreamed about as a child and as an adult Im still pursuing it. It actually has become a very realistic pursuit for me too. I know its not the norm for many people though...

I have a similar dream I am chasing. It's neat to see I am not the only one.

Of course. I didn't mean anything by it All little girls dreaming of being someone famous, but very few would ever actually pursue it. Didn't mean to offend anyone!!!!

Oh honey Im not offended!! I totally understand where youre coming from. Youre a sweetheart!
I just know a lot of people are afraid to pursue the arts for fear of it being unrealistic. And I like to show that its not the case! I do totally see your point though. From an outside point of view, the entertainment business seems very unreachable.

probably a psychiatrist...but it was a lot of school so i did a double major in psych and mkt cuz a mkt elective got me into business.

although social worker would have been good...or a teacher...i just got pulled into the idea of making $ in the corporate world vs. helping ppl and being happier doing it.

now im an asst manager in a media dept

edit to add - if i had known then that i would have gone for my mba and been in school forever anyway...it might have been different.

Re: NWR: Your dream job (a realistic one)

WOW. I honestly have like 5 things I wish I pursued.

I wanted to be a vet when I was younger. I could kick myself for not sticking with it. I love animals, dogs in general, and when I think about changing jobs, I am always drawn to those that include animals. However, if you are not a vet or a trainer, it seems that any other job having to do with animals pays like shiiiit. And unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of taking a job that pays any less than I make now. I dream in the future of breeding dogs or maybe opening a doggie day care.

I also get mad at myself sometimes for not going into teaching. I thought about it for awhile, and while the summers off would be soooo nice, I tend to think that I would be bored, teaching the same cirriculum over and over again, year after year. And I love kids, but sometimes, I don't. So I honestly don't know if I could deal with Jimmy who keeps putting gum in Cindy's hair, etc. College level, maybe. And I would want to teach English.

I have dreamed of singing for a living for many, many years. I took lessons not too long ago and talked to some folks who own studios, etc. Never went further than that and now I just sing alllll the time, karaoke, etc. It is the one thing I think that I would be happy doing, but I just don't have the money or time to pursue it. Also, I think I have a good voice, but I am not sure it's good ENOUGH. I know it's very hard to break into any sort of business like that.

Right now, I am an associate producer for a production company. Most of the time it's boring because we are a start up of sorts. When it's busy, it's crazy. I do not think I really like the work, however. In a year or so, we are moving to NH. I hope to look for a job in Jan. that I do from home so that I have one when we move and I don't need to find a home and a job at the same time. Preferably, the job would be based in NH so that I could work from the office if need be.

I want to edit a magazine, newsletter, website, etc. If it's an animal-related co., that would probably be the best I could do, aside from getting paid to sing.

LOL. I think we should have an LIW gtg so Jenn can sing karaoke for all of us

My sister is a music teacher, and sometimes I get so jealous. It was never a question for her what she wanted - and she really loves her job. I never had a 'calling' like that. I did accounting because the job market was good and I was good at it and I knew I would make an okay amount of money. I guess I never imagined sitting at my desk all day doing accounting. . . as odd as that sounds.

Doesn't sound odd at all. For me, every job I've had loses it's oomph after a while of sitting there all doing doing that one thing. I've looked for a long time for a job with variety and I do not think they exist at a decent pay level. If they do, you need specific training.
