NWR: Your dream job (a realistic one)

Original post by MrsHtobe

If you could do it all over, what would you be? I don't mean astronauts or movie stars, but a real job that you wish you had chosen instead.

I think I would have been either a nurse or a teacher. (NOT an accountant).

But I don't have the time or money to change that now, so it is what it is.

What would you be?

ETA: Also include what you do now!

I really regret that I didnt become a teacher At the time so many girls were majoring in education and I wanted to do something different. Little did I realize the field I chose is so hard to get a job in but the classes were interesting so I went with it. Now I work in finance, not at all what I majored in. Who thought about how covenient it would be when you have kids or how you get off weeks at a time for winter/spring break. Too bad we cant go back in time.

WOW. I honestly have like 5 things I wish I pursued.

I wanted to be a vet when I was younger. I could kick myself for not sticking with it. I love animals, dogs in general, and when I think about changing jobs, I am always drawn to those that include animals. However, if you are not a vet or a trainer, it seems that any other job having to do with animals pays like shiiiit. And unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of taking a job that pays any less than I make now. I dream in the future of breeding dogs or maybe opening a doggie day care.

I also get mad at myself sometimes for not going into teaching. I thought about it for awhile, and while the summers off would be soooo nice, I tend to think that I would be bored, teaching the same cirriculum over and over again, year after year. And I love kids, but sometimes, I don't. So I honestly don't know if I could deal with Jimmy who keeps putting gum in Cindy's hair, etc. College level, maybe. And I would want to teach English.

I have dreamed of singing for a living for many, many years. I took lessons not too long ago and talked to some folks who own studios, etc. Never went further than that and now I just sing alllll the time, karaoke, etc. It is the one thing I think that I would be happy doing, but I just don't have the money or time to pursue it. Also, I think I have a good voice, but I am not sure it's good ENOUGH. I know it's very hard to break into any sort of business like that.

Right now, I am an associate producer for a production company. Most of the time it's boring because we are a start up of sorts. When it's busy, it's crazy. I do not think I really like the work, however. In a year or so, we are moving to NH. I hope to look for a job in Jan. that I do from home so that I have one when we move and I don't need to find a home and a job at the same time. Preferably, the job would be based in NH so that I could work from the office if need be.

I want to edit a magazine, newsletter, website, etc. If it's an animal-related co., that would probably be the best I could do, aside from getting paid to sing.

You just made me think, I wish I could work with animals. I thought about being a vet but I cant deal with having to put animals down or seeing sick animals. I guess I wish I could work in a doggie day care or something like that but I'm sure the pay is crap and I really cant afford that right now. Maybe one day.

Sorry, that was long

LOL. I think we should have an LIW gtg so Jenn can sing karaoke for all of us

My sister is a music teacher, and sometimes I get so jealous. It was never a question for her what she wanted - and she really loves her job. I never had a 'calling' like that. I did accounting because the job market was good and I was good at it and I knew I would make an okay amount of money. I guess I never imagined sitting at my desk all day doing accounting. . . as odd as that sounds.

Doesn't sound odd at all. For me, every job I've had loses it's oomph after a while of sitting there all doing doing that one thing. I've looked for a long time for a job with variety and I do not think they exist at a decent pay level. If they do, you need specific training.

Yeah, I mean like - I don't know if I'll ever be 100% happy doing ANY job. Its good to know its not just me!!!

Yeah, I 100% know what you mean. I dislike working terribly.

I started making my own cards and I love to scrapbook, so if I could make a nice living by doing that, singing and maybe a part time editing job - and have insurance at the same time, of course - I'd be set. I would totally get 2 part time jobs if it wasn't for the damn insurance crap. (Fh doesn't have any, working on cars you never do, so I have to get it for us.)

Yeah - maybe if I had stuck with the vet idea, I wouldn't be so squeamish around blood and I'd be able to handle sick animals. Now, no way no how. I see a dog wimpering and I cry, seriously. That is why I hope at some point I can open my own pet hotel, etc. Would be fun, right???

I would be a photographer or in graphic design of some sort.

Right now I'm a Sr. Account Manager and I love my job and the varied tasks and responsibilities that come with it - I just hate the beuracratic crap that accompanies working for my company.

I'm a nurse now... just started and it's rough most of the time. I'm told it will get easier or at least better but we'll see.

I wish I went for teaching, it was nursing or special ed. teaching. Lately I've been having so many rough nights at work, when I go back for my bach degree I'm not sure it will be in nursing. Who knows, maybe it will get better and I'll stay put.

Photographer sounded great, until I saw mine in action the day of my wedding. LOL

He worked so hard & he's so young.

I guess every job looks like our dream job until we're actually there doing it. LOLOL

Wonder if we work for the same bank. I'm an Exec Asst and I just happened to land where I am. WAs never really sure what I wanted to do.
I was a travel agent for a while but hated leisure travel, only liked corporate until the internet became so huge. Then I ended up in Customer Service and continued from there and somehow ended up an EA for a big bank. I like the job b/c I do different things but I hate the politics and red tape it takes to get anything done. Not to mention constantly worrying about being unemployed.

I think I'd like to be a Veterinarian or a teacher.

I like my job now...I left teaching after september 11 to join the NYPD...it has its ups and downs, especially when i have to work holidays, but I always wanted to be a police officer and I dont have any regrets leaving teaching. Besides, I can retire in 13 more years and go back to teaching!
