Yes and no. If it's just some random person then yes. But if it's a very close friend or relative and they are looking for a house them I wouldn't mind giving the info nor would I think of it as rude. JMO

depends- are they a close friend? are they also looking for a house?
if it was a stranger I would say yes- if it was my BF and she wanted to get an idea of what her monthly payments would be- NO

No, it all depends anyway on how much you put down or if your taxes are included. People ask all the time, I just take it as they're trying to get a comparison, especially if they're looking into buying a house.

I think it kind of is. I think it is the equivalent of someone asking you how much you make. I think it is personal, and the only possible exception is if it is a close friend who is inquiring because they are trying to figure out if they can afford a mortgage or if theirs is too high. jmo

I don't think its rude, I think they're looking to just compare with what they're paying. I've asked friends how much they pay, just so I know what to expect when I buy a house. I wouldn't ask someone i'm not close to though.

It depends on the person and the context of the conversations when asked.

I dont think so...then again it depends who the person is. I know in our family we are all very open and even with our friends who are homeowners as well.

Thanks, it wasn't anyone close to me at all but this person tends to ask nosie questions and I thought this one was a bit nosie.
This individual is not looking for a house at this time. They are aware I am in the process of purchasing a home and wanted to know how much I am putting down and what my mortgage would be and I thought it was rude of them to ask.
I agree with LisaJill, I just think it's as if your asking a person how much they make.
But thanks anyway...just wanted to know what you girls thought

I dont think its rude in certain cases. I mean people walk into my apt and ask how much rent we pay. I am always happy to tell bc we have a really good deal. I do the same ask people about their rents (kind of similar to mortgage).
I think asking someone about their mortgage is weird bc it depends on so many factors. If someone was educated on mortgages they wouldnt ask. I think if someone asked me I would say 'you do understand it depends on how much you put down, cost of house, your credit rating, the rate you locked down etc.'

I think given the circumstances in this case, the inquiry is used to make judgments. To figure out (a) how you could afford to pay it, (b) to probably make a judgment about whether family helped or whether you married into money, etc. I don't compliment someone on their clothing and as 'how much was it', I don't walk into someone's apartment and ask what their rent is (they can def. tell me if they want to), i don't ask someone how much their wedding costs or how much their car costs them. I think money things are touchy.

Under those circumstances, I think it's rude. When we purchased our co-op I asked just about everyone and anyone who had bought in the same price range as we did what their mortgage was like but it was strictly for reference, not out of nosiness.

That's true, I guess it depends on how the question was asked. I tell all my friends how much my rent is all the time...but this person was digging way too deep into my personal business.
I appreciate all your opionions

No. I think real estate is a huge topic of conversation that people are genuinely interested in. I think people are more curious than nosy. JMO

Nope, don't think it's rude. I think I answered your post on LIF though.

Exactly... like you said, if someone is educated on mortgages they would know it's impossible to answer that question because it all depends on the cost of the house, how much your interest rate, whether it's a fixed or variable rate, how much you put down, etc...
