My hair gets like that too, but my stylist has some miracle ceramic iron and products that help my hair fight humidity more than it would if I did it myself. It's great! But I totally understand what you mean. You don't want to worry about your hair sweating out while you're partying!I'm going to show her the picture soon...I'm sure she can do a toned down version.

I was going to go to their bridal showcase the other night-but FH is so anti howard beach. He was like he's not going there after the sun goes down!! he's crazy!
I don't blame him!

Re: Official African American Brides Thread
I'll apologize in advance for this being so long but i need you ladies to tell me what you think. My D.J. asked us for our final list of songs and my mother is giving me grief about some of my song choices. Honestly, I'm too pregnant and stressed to even care at this point but give me your opinions cause I wanna finalize this list (like yesterday) but I also want to know that other people don't think the way she does. So here it goes........Parents Entrance: John Legend 'Each Day Gets Better'
Bridal Party Entrance: Fabolus 'Everyday, Everything, Everywhere'
Our Entrance: Either Jaheim 'The Chosen One' or Drake 'Best I Ever Had' (Edited of course for the 96 year old great-grandmother who I want to make it through the reception)
First Dance: Kenny Lattimore 'For You'
Mother/Son Dance: Boys 2 Men ' A song for Mama'
Father/Daughter Dance: Here's where my mother get's annoyed. Originally my father and I were supposed to Dance to Chrisette Michele 'Your Joy' but since my father passed, I really can't imagine doing it. So instead, my grandfather offered to do the first dance with me. We decided to make it more of a celebration dance than a sad and sappy one so we're going to dance to Stevie Wonder 'As (always)' and just keep the party going from there.
Taking off Garter: Chris Brown 'Take you down' (Mom thinks it's too risque, I think it's appropriate)
Garter Toss: Keith Sweat 'I want her'
Bouquet Toss: Beyonce 'Single ladies'
And whatever they call it when you put the garter on whoever caught the bouquet: Bobby Brown 'Tender Roni' (another one mom feels is too risque)
Honestly, i think it's a great (and kind of fun) list, but what do you all think?

Re: Official African American Brides Thread
It's your wedding and if that's the songs you want...then go with. Your mom will be too wrapped up in the events of the day to be worried about the songs playing. I would go for it.

Hey girls I know this board hasn't been in active in a few months but I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Courtney and I look forward to chatting with you ladies. Of course I want to chat with everyone on liw but I think this board is helpful for discussing vendors such as make-up artists and hair stylists for african-american women.

Re: Official African American Brides Thread
Time is winding down over here. Less than 2 weeks!!!Starlight Entertainment is booked as our DJ/MC. We still have to finish getting the music together tho. I can't decide on ceremony music, he doesn't have a Kompa song to dance w/ his mom yet, he hasn't given me the list of reggae riddims he wants played, and we haven't confirmed that the DJ knows/has the Kompa songs on the list we gave.
Today I'm running to Harlem to meet with my aunt who's making my mantilla style veil. I'm praying it comes out perfect because I really don't think I have time to find another veil off the rack. I really really want one with lace edge...hope it comes out beautifully.
My friend Rukiya of Abebi Beauty is doing my makeup...trail pics are in my album. I love her. She's great.
Right now we're trying to print our stationary (menu, programs, table numbers, escort cards, etc...) out. It's a headache because if we take them to Staples or Kinkos it's way over $200! So far they're coming out nice on the home printer so wish us luck! I can't wait to see how the whole Adinkra symbol theme works out!

Re: Official African American Brides Thread
Hey there. I have about 3 months to go and the time couldnt be coming faster. I am using jae richardson for make up. She is a MAC artist and is amazing. She has done my make up for a few different events now. I am using my regular stylist, darlene, for hair and After hours for my DJ. It was important to have a DJ that could play west indian music and our DJ is haitian so it works out perfectly.I just got my invites so i am preparing to mail those out next weekend. its all becoming so real. hows everyone elses progress

Re: Official African American Brides Thread
Hi Ladies,Getting married May 28th 2011 at Sand Castle. I am thrilled to see a board dedicated to African American brides.
So a few questions.
1. Does anyone have a good make up artist thats reasonably priced? I would like to pay for this for my bridal party but do not want to spend $2000 for this..
2. My wedding is the morning. And I would like to have my hair done the day of the wedding. Do you know of any hair stylists willing to travel to me at like 7 or 8a?
3. how do you feel about taking pictures with FH before the ceremony?
Thanks
Naomi

Hi Naomi! Welcome!!
I used Rukiya of Abebi Beauty. She's amazing and I felt even prettier than I did at my trial. Definitely affordable. She only did my face so idk the cost for your whole bridal party...but I'm sure it'll be nowhere near $2000.
I think taking pics before the ceremony frees you up to be a part of every aspect of your wedding...CH in particular. We didn't do it because it was important to me that we don't see eachother. It's all about personal preference though.

Thanks will definitely look her up. I had very strong feelings about not seeing him before the ceremony. But now I want to take pics at OWG so it would be better to do it pre ceremony. I just have to convince.

Re: Official African American Brides Thread
Hey ladies!! I've been calling around for a makeup artist and they prices they give me seem a little expensive! For the bride I was quoted between 200-350 and 150-175 for the bridal party. Do these prices sound reasonable? Also I need to find a DJ that plays great music including hip hop, r&b, oldies, and reggae. My dad is from Jamaica and reggae and even a little soca is a must for the wedding!! I also want uplighting and gobo lights. Is this all possible?
Thanks in advance!!
