Official thread for those who have LOST PARENT(s)....

Original post by KarinAmanda

so I dont think we have an official thread for those girls who have lost moms or dads, even both (and I know there are a few )

i thought it would be nice to have our own thread where we can share ideas ... whether it be about memorials for the day of, mother/father dance alternatives etc... I know that you ladies have supported me in the past with my father passing and I hope I can help you girls...

with that being said, any idea for candle memorials? are you making them? ordering them from anywhere in particular? I dont even know where to being - I'd like to include my dad is anyway possible without making it a sad occasion

My mom passed away 3 years ago. When she got married she had a special dance with her mom to Helen Reddy's-You and me Against the World. It was all of ours song for eachother. So I was going to dance with her to it at my wedding as well as a different song with my dad. Since she passed away I am going to use that song for my father daughter dance. Everyone in the family knows it was our song so I think it'll be really special...it's just going to be really hard for me to hold back the tears!

My mom used to sing me that song too when I was little. I always loved the end when the little girl says 'I love you mommy'.

My mom passed away on Easter Sunday in 05 and my dad when I was 16. My mom and I were very close. She was going to walk me down the aisle and we were going to dance to 'Kind and Generous' by Natalie Merchant. I still can't even hear that song without breaking into tears. FH and I have been dating for 13 years so mom knew him very well at least. I remember the day I played the song for her and we both cried.

The wedding is suppose to be a happy time, so I'm not playing that song and I'm not dancing with anyone. My florist is making a wreath to put around my memory candle. Not sure if I'm making one or ordering one...any ideas???

The hardest part will be making that trip down the aisle by myself. My FFIL offered to walk me down (how sweet)...I just think he should be standing next to his wife while his son is getting married. Such mixed emotions about it.

Thanks for keeping this thread going girls...its tough planning your wedding without your loved ones...hugs to all of you...

OMG usually when I mention that song nobody has really ever heard of it. That's so cool that your mom used to sing it to you! And yea, that part at the end now always makes me cry!

I too, lost my mother 10 years ago this Feb. Although I have 2 years to think about it, I will definitely be doing something for her at my wedding; I just don't know what.

My dad died when I was 14 (in 1994). I asked my Mom to walk me because she's the only one truly 'giving me away'. I do have a stepfather that I am close with, and I do want to include him, so I'm having him escort my 2 Grandma's down the aisle before the bridal party enters.

At the reception I will play Pink Floyd's 'Wish you were here' for him (He loved pink Floyd, and I think of him every time I hear it on the radio). I won't be drawing attention to it when it palys at the wedding, I'll know why its playing and that's what matters to me.

For the dance, I'm undecided between dancing with my mom or skipping that dance altogether.

our wedding will be 10 days after the 14th anniversary of my mom dying, and 6 days before her bday. i think the hardest part with the planning was not having my mother there to come with me to look for dresses, get excited for any bit of planning we do. we're def doing a memorial candle, not sure what else though.

I know exactly how you feel. I lost my mom also and looking for dresses and everything just didn't feel the same. I found the dress I loved and it was so bittersweet I was crying becasue I was so happy but sad at the same time that she can't share it with me. I'm not sure what to do either. But I want her to be incorporated somehow...

i lost my dad about ten years ago and this wedding is making me feel like it happened yesterday its crazy.

I feel the same way. My father died in 2001. And the planning process has been tough for me. And FH lost both of his parents last year. His mom in feb and his dad in june. so I know that the whole day will be emotional. I am have my Godfather and My brother walk me down. I also intend to release butterflies in memory of our parents and also a table to the wedding with pictures and candles. and finally we are lighting a candle at the chruch for each parents.

FH mom passed away 4 yrs ago before I met her. I made lapel pin with a picture of her that he will wear. We are also having a memory candle with her and other family members names on it.

Where can I get a memory candle? I'd like to make one like yours.... ?

It's so nice to have everyone to talk to.... It's like we all understand what each other is going through (in one way or another).

I agree, and I love all of the different ways that everyone is remembering their parent(s). It's kind of comforting to read each person's story

I lost my younger brother in September 2006 to cancer and I think that after reading all of these ideas that I will hang a picture from my BO-K. I don't want to do anything that will upset anyone at the wedding and know that my brother would be mad if we made him a big deal!

What a great thread & support system

I lost my father suddently almost 3 years ago... My parents divorced when I was very young and I grew up with my dad, so it was that much harder for me... I'm having a BOK charm, poem in the program and probably a memorial of some sort at the RH. My grandparents (my father's parents who are like parents to me... and are amazing) are both walking me down the isle. I'm not doing a Father/Daughter dance or anything to replace it since to me you can't replace that and if I tried to speak- I'd just lose it.....

to all of you for your loss!!!

I saw this in a magazine, and thought I'd share it...

In memory of loved ones, a vase with flowers is engraved with ' In loving memory, these flowers bloom as a symbol of a life and love remembered.'

I think it's very sweet, I might do this over the candle.

That is a great saying. I may use it on a vase.

My FI's mom past 1 year ago this coming Monday and I am having everyone that walks down the aisle carry 1 single long stem rose (her favorite) and place it in a vase at the alter (FI will place his on an empty chair). We will be bringing the vase in and putting it on our table after the ceremony.

We are also giving out large white cookies (like blk & white cookkies w/out the chocolate) as favors.

My father passed away a year and a half ago very unexepectedly in an accident. We are going to have a memorial candle that me and my sister (MOH) will light while a poem that was read at my parents wedding is read. My cousin, who has always been like a brother to me, is walking me down the aisle.

I was thinking of doing a dance with my mother to one of my dad's favorite songs. But I don't think I am going to announce it or anything because I don't want to get too sad.

I think that is a very good idea...although i am in a different situation..i will also be dancing with my mother. Your father will be watching down!
