OK, no way in HELL! stop the STUPIDITY! : Katrina does NOT equal 9/11
***?
are you kidding me?
these ppl had warning.
I went into work that day on a sunshine blue day i had NO warning.
This is apples and oranges
9/11 was an attack Katrina is an act of GOD
I am fed up with this BS
4 year anniversay is coming Katrina is devasting
BUT IT IS NOT THE SAME
they do not equal in tradgey either.
9/11 was 3000 people dying in mass attack in a matter of moments.
Katrina was a long time coming and deaths are STILL happening
9/11 was a shock and brutal Katrina was massive but nearly predictable.
those who disagree...... well to each their own I guess, but this is driving me nuts

I don't blame you for mentioning the fact that such comparisons are deeply annoying and problematic. At this point, we have so many other things to worry about besides comparing 9/11 and Katrina. What's the point of deciding 'who has suffered most' -- it's not a competition!
ETA: And if it were a competition, why would anyone want to win it?

I agree that it's definitely apples to oranges. And act of terrorism does not equal an act of God.

I was just saying this to DH yesterday. I think people moved faster and did more because the attacks took place in three places and we felt the safety of our country was at risk. I won't say that what happened in the south was minor, but I don't know how the damage there can spread through the country the way 9/11 did.

I agree w/ you 200%. The one thing that keeps bothering me is when the mayor of New Orleans called this the worst thing that has ever happened to our country. Katrina was horrible, however, I just feel like 9/11 was 10 times worse. Katrina was predictable- 9/11 was not!

there are people who will disagree and debate anything and everything.... but like another poster stated- why should it be a competition to see who suffered more?
both were horible in their own rights- but they are not the same.

that it was predictable? 9/11? be that as it may (altho i think that's a bit of hindsight 20/20 bs) NO ONE can debate that those in the trade centers had no warning. No choice to stay or leave, no way to at least say 'this is where i am because ________' there was NO warning
Katrina had warning
straight and simple

In a previous thread I did say that all that was going on with Katrina made me feel like I felt after 9-11....but not to compare the 2 events. What I meant was that i felt equally as helpless in both situations, despite truly wanting to help people effected.

it's not an apples to apples comparison, and classifying either issue as straight and simple in my opinion is a tad bit myopic.

Re: OK, no way in HELL! stop the STUPIDITY! : Katrina does NOT equal 9/11
I do agree, it is not the same. 9/11 was terrible and there was NO warning
I wonder sometimes why people didn't leave, but one thing I found out was they stopped bus service 48 hours before the storm hit. Many of the people are poor in that area and some may have not had cars. I feel bad for those people who were trapped there. I also wonder if they are hit or warned with hurricanes so often that it doesn't really phase them. They've probably rode a few out before. I don't think anyone really knew it was going to be THIS bad.
Either way, it's horrible. I just can not imagine what it would be like. I also agree they are not really comparable. Two different things. Both were a tragedy!

It wasn't the storm that did the damage- it was the levies.. and there was no warning that the levies were going to break... maybe the army corp of engineers knew about this, but the every day people certainly didn't know about it.
It is NOT a competition as to who suffered more. Families on have lost love ones. Millions of dollars of damage has been done.
But the thing that makes me wonder- irregardless if it is an act of God or act of War is that it has taken days to get aid there. One day after 9/11 I was seeing cop cars in NYC from all over the country and those numbers only grew. It has taken NYC 4-5 days to commit resources to New Orleans.
We should all be brothers and sisters here- we are all Americans- whether attacked or victim of a natural disaster.... Instead of a thread 'stop the stupidity' maybe we can all have a little more solidarity- whether we think the comparisons are just or not... When 9/11 happened the Country was with us as New Yorkers.... but now it's OUR turn to give support to THEM...

I agree. I also don't think that you can compare the complete leveling of many major cities along the Gulf Coast to 9/11. Tragedy is tragedy and not a game of one upmanship.
