OK, no way in HELL! stop the STUPIDITY! : Katrina does NOT equal 9/11

Original post by Xelindrya

***?

are you kidding me?

these ppl had warning.

I went into work that day on a sunshine blue day i had NO warning.

This is apples and oranges

9/11 was an attack
Katrina is an act of GOD

I am fed up with this BS

4 year anniversay is coming
Katrina is devasting

BUT IT IS NOT THE SAME

they do not equal in tradgey either.

9/11 was 3000 people dying in mass attack in a matter of moments.

Katrina was a long time coming and deaths are STILL happening

9/11 was a shock and brutal
Katrina was massive but nearly predictable.

those who disagree...... well to each their own I guess, but this is driving me nuts

I don't blame you for mentioning the fact that such comparisons are deeply annoying and problematic. At this point, we have so many other things to worry about besides comparing 9/11 and Katrina. What's the point of deciding 'who has suffered most' -- it's not a competition!

ETA: And if it were a competition, why would anyone want to win it?

as much as i do agree with you that it is not a compition of what was worst...but i really dont think that they should be comparing them either.

i completely agree with you, veronica. and i want to know, how this comparison even came up?? natural disaster vs. terrorist attack...not even close...its like apples vs. chia pets - they don't come close

I know there was alot of talk about how could 9-11 have not happened and that we knew something was coming...but let me ask this...if they had beefed up security before...lets say 2 mo nths....would you have been freaked out about it and pissed off? There are so many people who get upset at the new policies for flying and transportation NOW...so imagine what it would have been like if they did it then-when the reason would not have been apparent or obvious to us....The problem is that people here take the freedoms and opportunities we have for granted....
Yes we have problems with the system. There are people who are poor and people who are rich...its always going to be that way. There are going to be people who take things for granted and people who appreciate anything and everything done for them...but...we as a nation need to realize that we are SPOILED!!! We dont want to wait on lines...we dont want our luggage searched thru and we dont want to take our shoes off...they do this for our safety...so that 9-11 DOES NOT happen again. I got on a plane at Laguardi in July and had a couple in front of me cursing and screaming at the security people because she had 'personal' items in her bag!
As for Louisiana, It is a horrible thing to think that it 'COULD happen to us' as everyone says it will never happen to them. People had no way out and some did have a way out...but both classes of people STAYED!!!! Not just the poor...but the rich did too

Sorry for the rant...

ETA:They compare in NO WAY!!! Just ask the people who were in the city on 9-11 if they had warning would they have gone?

I had not heard it compared prior to reading this post....its horrible for all involved in both tragedies

Both are horribly, horribly tragic. Why compare.

I agree w/ you Xellindrya. Although they are both horrible tragedies, I don't think it's a fair comparison

Re: OK, no way in HELL! stop the STUPIDITY! : Katrina does NOT equal 9/11

Who was comparing them? I read on the other thread someone say that people are acting horrible to each other in this tragedy while people showed more goodness in 9/11. Hence, the fact that they are very different situations with different circumstances.

Katrina does not equal 9/11 in general, but they are both horrific, either way. People shouldn't even get mad over which one is worse. The Katrina situation is unfortunate also because there's some ignorant people who seem to blame the people as if it's their own fault for staying.

As a matter of fact, the people who waste their time deciphering the difference between the two as which is worse, can kiss my a**.

Katrina was predictable- 9/11 was not!

i think there are people who would disagree and debate this...

that it was predictable? 9/11?
be that as it may (altho i think that's a bit of hindsight 20/20 bs) NO ONE can debate that those in the trade centers had no warning. No choice to stay or leave, no way to at least say 'this is where i am because ________' there was NO warning

Katrina had warning

straight and simple

It wasn't the storm that did the damage- it was the levies.. and there was no warning that the levies were going to break... maybe the army corp of engineers knew about this, but the every day people certainly didn't know about it.

It is NOT a competition as to who suffered more. Families on have lost love ones. Millions of dollars of damage has been done.

But the thing that makes me wonder- irregardless if it is an act of God or act of War is that it has taken days to get aid there. One day after 9/11 I was seeing cop cars in NYC from all over the country and those numbers only grew. It has taken NYC 4-5 days to commit resources to New Orleans.

We should all be brothers and sisters here- we are all Americans- whether attacked or victim of a natural disaster.... Instead of a thread 'stop the stupidity' maybe we can all have a little more solidarity- whether we think the comparisons are just or not... When 9/11 happened the Country was with us as New Yorkers.... but now it's OUR turn to give support to THEM...

Thank you. Well said, Sassy.

I whole heartedly agree! There can be NO comparison. I was just discussing this with my sister and saying how sick it was making us that some people would even begin to compare the two! Both are awful events in two very different ways.

i agree with you 100000000000000000000000000000% I feel so horrirble for these victims however, they were told to get out. If they told us to leave LI b/c of a huge storm, I'd be out! I don't know why so many people thought they'd be okay, what were they thinking.

I wish there was more I could do to help them now and the re-building is going to be horrible for them, but I really think they should have left when told to do so.

I agree that they are both awful tragedies, but I can understand how what has gone on in the aftermath can cause people to compare. Giuliani was praised so passionately for his sympathetic, yet no-nonsense approach. Bush is floundering. There has been a terrible delay in getting supplies to the victims and no one can provide a straight answer as to why.

But what's most unsettling for me is the way people are behaving. The awful stories that are coming out of the superdome are just disgusting.

Maybe people were just so impressed with the way everyone reacted and acted post 9/11 and they're as equally disappointed in the behaivour of many in the aftermath of Katrina. It's hard to swallow....

I'm sorry, but I am so tired of people blaming the individuals that stayed. I have no idea what their reasons were, but I am sure that they did not expect the levies to give way and flood the entire region. Most of the people live in conditions that most of us can't comprehend. Its not so black and white. I mean, I don't see people fleeing everytime the terror level is raised here in NYC. Does that mean that if there is an attack we should all be left to die and blamed for our own deaths?

It's just ignorance to actually imply the people who stayed deserved what they got. And I agree with heidla, everytime the terror level is raised in NY, no one actually leaves.

People can compare the way in which people are reacting, but it's plain stupid to get mad and say they shouldn't even be mentioned together because one tragedy is worse than the other. All tragedies are horrific, no matter what.

You know what? People who live in New Orleans will see the hurricane as worse because they lived through it. People from NY will see 9/11 as worse because we lived through it. Period.

I agree with you - look at who stayed - the very old, the very young and the very poor. Remember that most of the people who stayed had no money, no car, and no where to go.

In 1995, the city of NO asked Congress for money to reenforce the levees. There plea was turned down. For 11 years, the city of NO knew that the levees needed to be upgraded after hurricane Andrew. Monies should have been allocated for these repairs.

My Dh's family is from NO and we have heard from them. They said that they beleive that the gov't did the best that they could with what only they could have imagined. They have lived in NO for over 50 years and have been through Camille, Betsy & Andrew and nothing can compare at all to what they just went through and that is b/c the levees broke. That is the main difference. That complicated issues beyond comprehension. There was 900,000 square miles of water and rescuers were working as fast of they could.

They do question the mayor and the govenor b/c there wasn't any 'real' plan for those who couldn't/didn't get out.

The reality is this, just as we were shocked on 9/11 people from all over came to our aid. Now, it is our turn, to give back!

I COMPLETELY agree with you!!!

What happened in New Orleans is just as bad as what happened at the WTC.

All the warnings in the world down there did not predict the levies would collapse and flood the entire region. New Orleans is now a COMPLETE WASTELAND. That storm wiped out an entire city. And not everybody had access to leave the city. What did people who didnt have the cash or didn't have the means of transporation supposed to do?

The WTC disaster wiped out a 5-10 block radius of downtown Manhattan. Katrina wiped out an ENTIRE CITY... that I think will not be rebuilt. The WTC will be back up by 2012.

Yes a lot of people were lost at the WTC. But I wouldn't be surprised if MORE people died from Katrina. And we won't know that for months probably.

And while some people say an act of terrorism is 'so much different' than an act of god... it really isn't.

In fact... a lot of documents (like insurance)... actually put exemptions in for certain things like claims for items that were caused by 'Acts of God' and/or 'Acts of Terrorism'.

I agree.

Katrina was a horrible thing. And 9/11 was a horrible thing. Two different things entirely ---except in the fact that they were both horrible.

Re: OK, no way in HELL! stop the STUPIDITY! : Katrina does NOT equal 9/11

The fact that 9/11 was in one area while the hurricane affected the whole of New Orleans is why I think you can't compare how people have been heard to be acting horrible to people as opposed to people showing more good during 9/11. Clearly, we're talking about hundreds of thousands in this situation and that can turn violent. They had to go to Texas to get some shelter and help. It's not like in our situation where people could walk for maybe an hour and get help from someone who was able to give it.

I mean, if we had a situation that our whole city had to evacuate and we had a long way to go for safety, we really don't know how it would be.
