Opinions on Southwest airlines?

Original post by sarahradio5

I was thinking of flying Jetblue, but I was wondering what you thought of Southwest? It's a little annoying that the latest they'll let you book right now is October. I wanted to book my flight upon hearing that fuel prices are driving flight costs up, but Southwest isn't letting me. Jet Blue doesn't have the BEST options for me right now...

I hate Southwest, and I hate the seating policy. People always get their insanely early and the policy brings out the worst in people - everyone's pushing and shoving. And just my luck, every SW flight I've been on, someone's bringing the smelliest food possible. And I've never found the staff to be friendly. I hate them, and never will fly them again. I love Jet Blue though. JMHO.

I'm using Southwest only because we want to leave out of Islip because it's much more convenient. If we were going to be NJ like we usually are, we'd take Jet Blue.

i like both....

to me southwest is convenient bc it is right in Islip and i usually fly alone to florida so the open seating doesnt bother me when im by myself.

jet blue usually has great prices and it nice bc you all have your own tv. my FH loves jet blue and would fly it everytime if possible

I like them a lot. But you have to know that they aren't a luxury airline, they are nice, but not super fancy (but then again, what is these days!)

I haven't flow JetBlue yet, my DH and I have a $300 credit with them from May when we were supposed to go see MIL, but I have heard wonderful things.

Hey Sarah-
When flying SW we just went online at midnight or whatever to print our boarding pass. When you print it online you usually get an 'A' which means you are the first group to board the plane. I have done it twice and gotten the seats I wanted. Near the wing, window. Gotta love the internet. And I agree, they were the friendliest funniest people.

I'm definitely a fan. I actually LOVE the seating AND ticketing policy--refundable anytime tickets kick hiney! Jet Blue doesn't fly to my area (yet) so I have no comment on them.

LOVE southwest!!!! i love how you can change your ticket at any time, with no penalty! plus, it flies into islip--only 15 minutes away from DH's family's house.

Not a big fan of Southwest, they always over book. Jet Blue is the only airline that does not do that. I don't feel like having any stress on the honeymoon so I will definitely be flying Jet Blue.

They both are good airlines but, I prefer JetBlue as well. I don't like this whole 3 - month in advance booking thing through Southwest! I also like to have my seat assigned and direct TV!

ETA: I do love Islip/Macarthur Airport though, it's so small and convenient! If you live really close to their, Southwest is a better choice.

isn't southwest the only plane that flys out of mcarthur for florida?

I like Jet blue for the tv's, the plane insides seem a lil more updated, and you get to pick your seat.....however....i would much rather fly southwest for the one simple fact that they fly outta macgarther, and by using ding you can get some dirtcheap sales!!!

One thing to be made aware of about SW. They don't give you seating assignments. You have to be one of the first people at the ticket counter for your flight to have a choice of where you can sit.

so... what are the odds that I will be able to sit with my new husband on our honeymoon? That's such a STUPID policy!! Is it just that we might not get an aisle seat or window seat... or that we might be separated?

I fly Southwest all of the time. I love them. They are the only airline I have seen that will always let you know exactly what is going on even if they are only delayed a few minutes. They go out of their way to make you happy and have a great staff. The seating policy is annoying, but I have never had a problem. You can check in 24 hours before your flight. So, if you go online right about that time the day before, you will be fine. Really, if you have an A or even a B, you will be able to sit together.

I think they are the only one that offers non-stop service, you could fly one of the other airlines and connect somewhere.

I've never NOT sat next to the person I was traveling with. Just make sure you check in early enough. You get assigned letters and depending on what letter you get determines when you can board. For example: Letter A goes first, B second, and C obviously last.

Funny Southwest story:

I was booked on a flight and checked in 23 hours and 59 minutes ahead to get my boarding group letter. Much to my surprise, I was boarding class B. Who got all the A's since you can only check in 24 hours in advance??

So I called and spoke to an agent, and she said yes all the A's were taken, maybe by people on earlier flights connecting through on my flight. Great.

Frustrated, I said so does that mean I'll be sitting on the roof? Without missing a beat, she replied 'oh no m'am! that's boarding group C!'

Gotta love a sense of humor!

Nope, their website is the only place you can do it.

They have frequent sales, so keep checking for the flights you want.
