Opinions Please!! Too much for a gift??? * with pics

Original post by AJsMommy122

Ok here is the story. FH and I are paying for our wedding on our own. My mom paid for my dress and his mom is paying for the favors. Everything else is on us.
BUT fh's mom owns a bunch of apts and is currently letting us live rent free in one of them. If not for that we would NOT be having this wedding.. no way no how.
So to thank her I wanted to get her a nice gift.. she is old italian and LOVE lenox and lladro. Well I discovered a lladro piece recently that is huge and so beautiful it brought me to tears! Its so perfect and I thought it would be a nice way for her to remember our wedding by... problem is the price tag! $2500

What do you girls think?

I have a wedding lladro from my parents that is gorgeous and is less than $400 (I forget the exact price). If you want lladro you can do better price wise.

We just bought a lladro for DH's parents as well... a beautiful large one for way less than that. You can definitely do better price wise.

I think it is a beautiful suggestion however, she may be angry that you spent so much on her when you do not have that kind of money to spend.

I saw this piece at Fortunoff's. It is stunning and very large. It's also a very limited edition. I say go for it if it is perfect for her.

Why is it that as women we rarely treat ourselves to our favorite things even if we can afford them? I know I do this.

She would see it and be reminded of you, it's one of her favorites and it is something probably no one else she knows will have.

omg!! considering she is letting you live rent free, i would give her $2500 cash or check to thank her for her generosity before spending it on a gift.

I agree! It's a beautiful gesture, but for that much $$ I would want to check with her first and see if that's really what she would want for that amount of $. My mom would rather take the $ and go to Europe!

I would shop around. There is a place in West Hempstead that sells Lladro for 20% off of Fortunoff's prices. I will find out the name and let you know.

Its beautiful but so expensive. I think that particular piece is more for the bride and groom to have though.

When my father was alive, I was buying him the Hummel Nativity set which is also very expensive (not as much as this piece). On one vacation in St. Thomas, I discovered a store called 'The Crystal Shop' that carried all the major porcelin and china collectable brands. Their prices are considerably cheaper than in the US. There is no tax and they don't charge shipping. I've ordered from them consistently for the last 5 years and have had always had a great experience.

I don't know how much cheaper it would be, but it might be worth calling them and getting a price.

If you are interested, the phone number is:

1-800-323-7232 (or 340/777-9835)

Make sure you have the manufacturer's number and the name of the piece handy when you call.

I agree....I like it, it's beautiful, but to me, it's something that I would give to the bride and groom.
Maybe if you could find one that has a mother and son, etc. I like it, just don't feel like it's for the MIL....otherwise, the thought is very sweet....

Well she dosent want to take money from us. and IMO its pretty tacky to give someone with money a check or cash instead of a gift.

if you think she is going to love it, go for it! don't worry about the money

Unless your heart is set on something like this, then I would definitely shop around for something similar for a lot less!!

Remember though for that kind of money there are a gazillion other things you can get...That is soo much money...

Good Luck!

I think you should def buy it. A mom whether she is yours or your FH's, are worth so much more. I think if you have the economic means, you should go for it. Whether or not she is letting you live rent free is not the point, it's the fact that she raised your FH, and probably did a good job at it, because you are getting married to him. On my part, for my mom, I got her a anniversary diamond band worth more than 4 thousand, simply because my dad had passed away close to their anniversary- and couldn't get her that ring she always wanted. So it was my turn to give her that, and even that cannot compare to what she has done for me and my husband. As far as for my inlaws, they had never been on a vacation-b/c they always worked for their kids, so we sent them on a carribean cruise after our wedding. Remember, they are worth so much more thatn lenox or lladro's. Do what is in your heart. Go for it.
good luck
