outdoor receptions

I'm looking into an outdoor reception. Can anyone give me any tips or pros and cons that you've experienced?

I know that weather in general is a major concern. Has anyone been to an outdoor reception where it has rained? Did tents make any difference or was the day just miserable?

Re: outdoor receptions

My E-party was outdoors in October and the day wound up being cold and rainy. The week of the party we had to rent tents and heaters (which are both fairly expensive.) The party was still great, but people heals were sinking in the mud a little.

That depends, how heavy is the rain, and is your tent on the ground or on a platform.

If it rains very heavy the day before the wedding, the ground will be very wet and muddy. So guests getting to the tent will have to walk through mud.

Also depending on the tent (how peaked it is-or not) if it rains heavy that day water can collect on the top of the tent making it sag.

Also keep in mind if it is one of those raw damp days, guest will be cold.

I worked an outdoor party in the rain during one August. It was miserable! People had to walk from the tents to the bathrooms in mud regardless of what you use for a walkway. It just wasnt' good. I love the idea of an outdoor wedding. What you could do is rent a KOC hall or something like that just in case it rains. They are usually inexpensive and you may be able to use their tables and chairs for the tents even if you don't use the space.
