Paying for the wedding

Original post by michelle1024

Hi Ladies,

You are all so helpful, so I just wanted to see if anyone was having problems with -- who is paying for what for the wedding?

When we originally started planning, my dad agreed to pay for everything, but now, with the economy the way it is, he is not so interested (putting it lightly :) in paying for all the vendors. He also put it out there why FHs family has not offered to pay for anything.

I'm just curious if anyone is going through/went through the same thing.

Is anyone FH's family paying for vendors or anything??

Thanks

Re: Paying for the wedding

you are lucky...we are paying for most everything ourselves. though both parents gave us about $5000 each as an engagement gift towards the wedding. aside from that...my mother (parents divorced and dad doesnt have much to offer) is paying for the shower and fil's are paying for the RD. Other than that...we are on our own.

Re: Paying for the wedding

Me and FH are paying for the bulk of it. My mom and step father are paying for my shower, my dress and giving us a good amount of cash towards the wedding.
FH's parent's don't have a lot of money so I don't think they'll be giving us anything.
My 'father' offered money and then decided that he didn't want to give it to me after I told him that my step dad was walking me down the aisle (it's a looooong story lol).

Edit to add: I just remembered his mom offered to take care of the rehearsal dinner. But she wants to do it at her brother's house. And then she'd end up inviting alllll of her family. So I'm not sure about that.

We are paying 100% of the actual wedding (minus the Dress).

My parents are covering the Bridal Shower.

His parents are covering the Rehearsal Dinner.

Re: Paying for the wedding

My mom is helping a lot, she had put stuff away for me. So she's pretty much has WM, photographer & video, my dress and eparty.

FH father gave us our down payment for the Hall.

Then we really got everything else, but my Aunts did say if we need help they would as much as they could.....

Re: Paying for the wedding

We're in our late 30s and our parents are older so we are paying for it ourselves. However, my Mom did give me a check to put towards it (since she had given some money to my sisters back when they got married). FH parents aren't doing anything - not even the rehearsal dinner (which is a bit annoying) but I'm trying to just move ahead and do our thing with what we can afford.

Re: Paying for the wedding

Me and DH paid for our wedding alone. My mother did buy my dress and his parents paid for our rehearsal, they just didnt have the money to help us out.

My gf just got married and her parents gave them x amount of dollars so her DH went to his parents and said so and so's parents are giving us this so will you be able to contribute as well - and they did.

If you are wondering how to ask his parents then just ask and will have your answer. If you are waiting for them to offer they may not. No use stressing over it so I would just ask if you want to know.

My mom is paying for my dress, alterations and accessories.. I really don't want anything else from her =/

His parents... Hmmm

A far as everything else I feel like its all me.. FH gives me money when he can... And i put it away to use when needed.

We are basically paying for everything... My mom and stepfather are paying for our honeymoon which is soooo great... my dad said he was going to pay for the DJ.. then he said he'd give me $ toward the dj.. so we will see what happens with that in the next couple of months.. And his parents... yeah right so its basically us.. but i am thankful for whatever help we do get...

Oh boy am I in the same boat... Fh thinks that they will give us something if we reeealy needed it closer to the wedding date, but I just don't feel like they want to fork over a dime. His Mom keeps saying that we should cut more people out, go cheaper with the vendors...blah blah blah. We CAN'T go ANY cheaper...geez. Soo... I'm just keeping my mouth shut.....for the moment at least.

Re: Paying for the wedding

I guess I'm in an opposite situation...FH's parents are the only ones really contributing. I'm really close with them, and not so much with my parents. They offered to help right away and they are paying for the majority of everything. FH and I have paid for all of the deposits on everything, and all of the payments, but when it comes to the day of, they are going to pay for the remainder of the hall and anything else that we can't afford. FH and I are trying to pay as much as possible...since they did also buy a house for us to live in ...I feel bad and want to pay for as much as possible. But also, FH's family and friends are about 85% of our guest list so I think they kinda feel obligated. If it weren't for them, we would be getting married at town hall!!

You're very lucky. My FH and I are paying for almost everything ourselves with some contributions from each side. His parents are giving us $6,000 and my mom is giving us $5,000, and we're greatful for to be getting even that.

FH and I are paying for everything. We are getting small help here and there, but for the most part FH and I are taking care of the majority of the bill.

Re: Paying for the wedding

My fiance and I are paying for almost everything and my parents are giving us a huge chunk of money in the summer for the final payments. My parents also threw us an engagement party.

My fiance's parents are only paying for the rehearsal dinner and yesterday tried to pull some BS where they said that if they're paying for it, they want to decide where it is. I told my fiance, 'Tell them money doesn't equal power. My parents are giving us a large amount of money and they have never given their opinions on anything. If your parents are giving a gift with strings attached, I don't want it and they can keep their money. If they want to play that game then they better cut people off of their list and my side will add more because my parents are paying for most of it.' I got sooo mad!! I hate when people think money equals entitlement. It's OUR wedding.

Meanwhile my fiance's two older brothers are huge losers with money problems and his parents are always giving them money which they never pay back and continue to be ungrateful for. My fiance and I are financially stable, have great jobs, and have never asked for anything ever. Why are we be punished for being smart with our money?

I hate how money creates problems...

We are paying for most of the wedding, but we knew that up front so we planned for that its unfortunate that things are changing for you now.

Re: Paying for the wedding

My father is giving us 10,000 for the wedding, bless his soul because i dont know how we would have done without it.

FH and I are paying for everything else, which will HOPEFULLY come out to 12-13k

FH's parents are paying for nothing and his mothers excuse is 'Because the brides side pays for EVERYTHINGGGGGGGGGGG'
