Re: PC - ok its gone TOO FAR
i know what u mean
im constantly opening my mouth and inserting my foot cause i dont know what to say or what to call someone...whatever i choose its always wrong
you cant use words like 'gay' or 'retarded' to describe anything anymore even though noone calls a homosexual or mentally challenged person by anything else for fear of being stoned
now they (the PC squad) has taken my dear cookie hoarding friend and making him eat veggies...puhleese like that will help obesity
its not the kids that are choosing the twinkie and ho-ho's ...its the parents or its parents who cannot afford the outrageous priced of fruits and vegetables in todays economy!!
IM angry and I'm not gonna take it anymore!!!

Wow....that's so incredibly sad. Yeah, blame cookie monster, because your child is overweight.... PLEASE, give me a break . This isn't going to have any affect on child obesity whatsoever. Cookie monster could eat apples, cookies, heck, he could even eat his own crap, but it's not going to change society.

My FH records all the music for sesame street, and for this season they did a song with cookie monster called 'Cookies are a Sometimes food'. I don't think that they are trying to be PC, they are just trying to educate kids about being heathly.. I don't really think anything is wrong with that. The whole season on Sesame street this year is dedicated to being healthy.

I don't think this is an issue of political correctness at all. These are two separate issues. The issue with cookie monster is, is he teaching children poor eating habits? Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. There is an increase in obesity and cookie monster eats cookies without any negative consequences, so I guess I can sort of see why they're thinking this way, but I think it IS a litle too far. Can't anything be innocent anymore?

Re: PC - ok its gone TOO FAR
Having cookie monster promote healthy eating isn't going to change kid's eating habits.
Sesame Street was probably my favorite show when I was in Pre-School (save maybe the Price is Right and Mr. Rogers ).
Was I overweight? No. Why? Because I watched maybe 2 hours of TV a day, and spent hours running around playing with my friends. I always went to the Tot lot, always went on walks, etc.
I didn't have 50 channels, I had maybe 10 or so. And I did not have a computer.
That's the problem with kids today - there's too much media, and it's easier to have them sit in front of the TV or computer for hours than it is to play catch with them, or push them on the swing set.
Making a muppet health conscious isn't going to rid the US of Childhood obesity. Turning off the TV and computer will.

I agree 100%! I was always skinny (except now) because I was too busy playing outside with my friends and not watching TV! My parents would not have let me hang around inside all day and play video games and watch TV. When I wasn't with my friends my parents had me horseback ride, going out with them to parks, boating etc! I have kindergarten and I can't even tell you how many kids (of corse they are the lowest in my class) only write about playing video games and watching TV- they never hand in their homework also! It's much too easy to stick your kid infront of the TV and not have to deal with them.

I don't think it's just that kids have too much. I was one of the kids who stayed in most of the time. It wasn't because I was addicted to video games, but it was because I had no backyard and my parents didn't feel it was safe for me to play in the street. I wanted to join sports and I would ave loved to do things like horeseback riding or boating, but my parents didn't have the $$ for it. I did dance, but even that was a struggle for my parents to afford. Anyway, I just mean don't assume kids who who stay inside and watch TV are lazy, etc.

In some case, this is proably the case. But, I've seen statistics, etc. that shows that over the years, childhood obesity has increased, and much of that is because children have become more sedentary.
Childhood obesity is not only attributed to media, of course, but foods that parents keep in the house. I was fortunate to have a very health concious mother - I rarely had soda - she would bring out a 2 liter bottle on friday's that we could drink with Pizza, and during the weekend, but that was it. during the week it was water, milk or juice. I ate McDonald's once in a blue moon, we never had sugary ceral, and the snacks she kept in the house were usually healthy. She didn't deprive me of sugar at all - I would get candy, and we would have potato chips, but she limited them.
Having healthy cookie monster isn't going to do much good if all that's in the house is cookies, soda, and potato chips.
And yes, I know that a lot of times it's cheaper to buy the foods that aren't as healthy, etc. My argument is just that changing Cookie Monster's eating habit's isn't going to drastically change that of children's unless the parent's are on board to buy the more healthy snacks, and children start leading a less sedentary lifestyle.

I guess not... but can't they just make a new healthy muppet.
A Cookie Monster without his cookie is just not right
