Aww! If we do decide on getting a dog Havanese is one of our choices. Our other choice is a Portuguese water dog. FH has allergies and we need a hypoallergenic breed. We live in an apartment complex so we are not sure if we want a larger breed here because we just don't think that is fair but we really want a PWD so we would have to just decide what would be the best bet. I fell in love with a Havanese years ago and wanted to get him but was still living at home and we had 2 dogs already-How are their temperaments? Anything you can tell me about the breed? Thanks!

You should definitely check out the Maltese if you want a hypoallergenic breed! They are very good with children and are very gentle, but also LOVE to play! If you don't like the show dog cut they have, you can groom them to have a puppy cut, which I think is absolutely adorable!

FYI, I can talk about dogs and cats for hours on end. I've had both and the 4 1/2 months before FH got me my kitten was the longest stretch of time I ever went without a pet. I NEVER want to do that again. I always want to have an animal!

Any breed that you're considering you should totally youtube the Dogs 101 segment for! You'll get a lot of information that might help you in the decision making process.

We have two kitties! My fh got me our Sphynx cat 2 Christmas ago right before we moved in together and after about 2 months we got a Persian kitten because our sphynx was alone all day and I felt so bad! The only restriction I'd say is when we go on vacation. I refuse to board them and I can't leave them alone with alot of food because sphynx are VERY social and she freaks out if left alone too long. The 2x we have gone away my mom has taken them but next year we wanna do a family vaca and I have no idea what I'm gonna do with them! Either ask a friend who lives with their parents to stay at our place or possibly hire a pet sitter to come 2x a day!

FH and I bought our bulldog, DaVinci, after dating for a year. He's sheds ....a LOT! Like I have to vacuum every single day and still find hair around the apartment. But he's our son and we love him to pieces.

For all who have pets, do you leave them crated when you go to work? If so, do you just leave like a wee-wee pad in there if they have to go to the potty?

I have a dog and two cats. None of which are going to come with me when I move in with FH. He doesn't have any pets because his dad is deathly allergic but we plan on getting a dog and two cats once we are in our house.
I have had dogs my whole life though and we have never left them crated. When they were puppies we would leave them confined in one room while everyone was at work/school with a wee-wee pad and food and water. Once they got housebroken though I've been lucky enough to have dogs that will wait until someone comes home to go to the bathroom. The dog we used to have Riley only went to the bathroom in the house when he was sick. My dog now Yogi won't even do that.....but he will wake someone up in the middle of the night if he needs to go out back if he's sick(so annoying)

I have like a big plastic rectangle shaped play pen type of thing that I keep both dogs in (it's takes up like 1/4 of my living room). It's got wee wee pads one of those bottle/refillable water bowls and Their huge bed that they share. They have plenty of room don't feel couped up get to stay together and my little one doesn't wreck anything or pee on the rug! Then of course when I'm home they get run of the house. Could not picture not coming home to those adorable pushed in faces ! Pics in my album.

I have a 4 year old Shih Tzu and when no one is home, she is allowed to roam downstairs. We tried to crate her but she HATES the crate. She's old enough now to know that she can only go on the wee wee pads that we have out for her. Once in a while she makes a mistake but hey, she's a dog. She can't be perfect all the time!

Hmm. I have no idea what I would do. I think I would have to crate because our apt is all carpet so to make a little section would mean possibly peeing on the carpet! Not sure what to do?

You can buy a playpen and make it as big or small as you like. Maybe you can put it in the kitchen? If not, you can crate as well but just make sure you don't leave them in there for too long and definitely make going into the crate a positive thing with lots of treats and toys.

We have a galley kitchen in the apartment but I think I could make that work. We went to look at puppies but I didn't know my work schedule at the time so we decided against it but now knowing my work schedule I would really love to get one now!

We always crate Carlos, he loves his crate! We associated it with getting a treat right from the beginning and he always has his toys in there, we always leave the door open and sometimes we find him in there just snuggling, it's so cute. I've always been a firm believer of crate training because I just feel like its safer for the dog. Especially because Carlos would pick up any little spec of anything when he was a puppy and I didn't want to worry about him getting into something he shouldn't when we weren't home. Havanese are really easy to housebreak, they're very smart, we don't use the wee wee pads anymore.

We want a Havanese so that is great to know! Did you put a wee wee pad in the crate?

We've recently taken on the family cat, the KRAKEN. He's only about 2 years old... and he's a big, fat, white cat. He's such a mush. He is now living full time in the basement with us since he peed in FMILs fancy purse and pooped in FFILs gym bag. However... they deserved it because they moved the litter box.

I was never really a cat person but one of the families I used to babysit for had a sphinx cat (who I call a Naked Cat) and she was so mushy. I also had a stray that lived on my old houses porch for about a year and he definitely turned me into a cat person.

I also cannot wait to have our own place so FH and I can get a nice BIG dog!!

I have a border collie named Jackson :) He was a gift from my FH. Usually when we go away my brother watches him but he may have to go into a boarding home while we are getting married (destination wedding).... unless we find a friend not going to dog sit. He's super friendly and TYPICAL BORDER COLLIE!!
