Original post by kateh

I'm having a really difficult time choosing a photographer... So I figured I'd ask for a little advice....

Who was your first choice? And why?

TIA!!

Re: Photographers - who and why?

I'm using K & J Photography and I couldn't be happier. I did tons of shopping, I saw at least 8 other photographers.

K & J was the first photographer that I could actually picture using on my wedding day. I met with the owner and he explained how he saw the day unfolding (picture wise) and it was exactly what I wanted. I loved that I got to meet the owner and my photographer. For me the personality of the photographer was just as important as their work. You are with your photographer ALL DAY, I met several companies that I would have killed myself if I had to stay with them all day. Plus they do video and I wanted to book the same company for both.

They let me customize my package to suit MY NEEDS and they were very reasonably priced, but not the cheapest of the ones I saw. No matter who you go with - Photo is not something you should pick the cheapest vendor on.

So far we've done my engagement shots and I am very happy with their work and service. K & J is NOT a vendor I will have to sit on to make sure they get the job done.

FM me with any questions....here's some of my engagement shots.

We went with Patken - saw a lot but we both agreed on them on the spot. I was very happy with my e-pics and will post a review after the wedding.

We booked Thomas Paul Photo because we felt the most comfortable with him and his work is incredible. He definately tells a story with his pictures. We could see and feel the emotion within his pictures. Plus his excitement about photography is contagious. We met with him a couple of times and found that his prices couldn't be beat.

Go with who you are comfortable with. I met with one that has been raved about in this post and FH and I couldn't get out of his house fast enough. We just didn't click with him. It's important to meet with them and talk with them and build a relationship with them. Don't just go with who is most popular.

Good luck!

Edited for spelling.

Duet because I love their work, they come highly recommended, they have excellent customer service skills and the price was right. If $$ was no object I still think I would have went with Duet although Verdi has great work too

I agree. We did our e-pics yesterday and he had us cracking up.

I'll be honest, I saw about 4 photographers and they were all great. their work didn't vary much from one to another. But I had to pick based on whether or not I could stand this person in my face all day. If he needed ritalin? No dice. If he was laid back and cool? Thats for me.

We also booked Patken...a warning though...the sales woman leaves much to be desired. My advice is if you really like their work and the sales lady turns you off ( I have heard this from a few brides), try to meet with Doug and then decide...JMO

Went with Spelman, b/c I love their work and love the photographer Christine.

If I had the money, I would have had Fifty Foot Films do our video, they do wedding cinematrography, they have done a lot of celebrities weddings, and it's awesome. They charge $10k BEFORE travel expenses from the West Coast for them.....

My photographer's name is Charles Maring. You can see his work on: www.maringphoto.com.

They have offices in CT and Manhattan. It is a husband and wife and they are awesome!!! I heard about them through my cousin, who is also using them.

I looked at so many photography places, and IMO, none of them compared.www.maringphoto.com

We are using Franklin Square Photographers for both photo and video. They take outstanding pictures and they are super nice - not cocky at all!

Here's their website if you're interested:

We went with Click Photography, for multiple reasons. First, we loved the owner and the work of all 3 senior photographers. We know who our photographer will be. The books that they put together aren't like any of the other books we saw - and we visited over a dozen photographers. Plus they really worked with us and made us feel comfortable.

I am very excited to have our engagement sitting and will make sure to post the pics.

They are based in Manhattan and Toronto. In the meantime you can see there work at

Yeah, I was one of those brides that got turned off. I was ready to book and then she tried to pull one on me. Too bad. I'm glad because it gave me the chance to book with Duet instead. One bride brought something to mind about Patken. Because of their square pictures (not rectangular like standard photos) it's going to cost you more money to find a frame to mount it on. I really liked their work though, too bad.

Ditto...that is a requirement for me too... I am too nervous for my photographer to be highstrung and more importantly unorganized
