places to live on LI

we live in queens but are looking to move this summer, I work in Queens and he works in Huntington, so we need to find something central....

We would like to rent an apt in a house maybe, somewhere close to LIRR and highway!

I am originally from eastern LI so I am not too familiar with Nassau County!

Any help would be appreciated! TIA

Huntington is super cute and young...lots of bars and shops, etc...and there is a large LIRR station. I know this would be amazing for him and kinda a hike for you, but the commute wouldn't be too bad...

I actually really like Huntington and would love to live there... I am just afraid of that commute! I think it would be about an hour each way... hmmm.... it's OK for him now because he is doing the reverse commute and he doesn't hit any traffic. I just wonder how the traffic is early when I leave for work?

Re: places to live on LI

My parents live in the area and I commuted by car on the LIE to Brooklyn before moving in with FH...

The LIE is evil...but it is do-able if you leave early enough. For the daily commute I would say grab a coffee, your ipod, and a bridal magazine and hit the LIRR! You might be able to catch an express train to Hunterspoint (not sure where you need to be in Queens)...

I work in College Point so public transportation kind of blows... I would need to take a train and then 2 buses... so I have to drive... but I teach and leave early so i might be able to beat most of the traffic...

yea I have been on Craigslist so many times, I just don't know what towns are central to where we both work! I was looking for some specific places so I could narrow down my search...

thanks ladies!

Re: places to live on LI

what time do you need to leave by?

what about living in hauppauge?

there is a great complex right off the LIE

and happauge is close enough to huntington for FHs commute

I used to travel to Astoria for work...
you really need to leave EARLY to beat the traffic...there is a huge difference in traffic when you leave at 530 vs 545

but if you can leave by 545 the lastestttt you should be OK with traffic

and you need to be close to the LIE when you're commuting so far, imo at least

To give you some bearing...Huntington is on the way North Shore. As such, I would try to look at towns in Nassau on the North Shore because it will be best for both of you. What about Manhasset...Roslyn...Syosset/Woodbury? All of those towns are on the North Shore and close to the LIE....

well work starts for me a 8... anhhhh I can't even imagine leaving by 5:45! I don't get out of bed until 6:30 usually...

I think that Happauge might be a little too far east... I grew up in Wading River and my dad used to work in Happauge...

There are a bunch of places you can look... try the east meadow, mineola, westbury, areas.. you can even look a little further east like Hicksville, plainview area. They are nice towns with the LIRR and Parkways running right though the towns...

Good Luck with your search

Re: places to live on LI

i grew up in williston park and that was a great town. it's sandwiched between mineola and new hyde park for reference.

i live in huntington now and LOVE it. try looking in plainview, hicksville, bethpage, levittown - all not too far from huntington and a much better commute to queens than from huntington.

if you're interested in the huntington area though, east northport is really great and affordable as is greenlawn. there are LIRR trains close to both.

FH lives in albertson with his parents and it's really nice there, but not sure if it's in ur price range. you might want to look in the mineola area as well.

HTH Feel free to FM me w/ any specific questions you might have!

I am biased but look into the rental apartments on Tulip Ave in Floral park. Right near the LIRR and the Cross ISland. A 33 minute commute to midtown on the train. The apartments are also right near the center of town, which is super cute with lots of bars, restaurants, and amenities you would need. I love right across in the co-ops and love it there. Good luck!

Re: places to live on LI

FH and I have a great apartment in the upstairs of a legal two-family in Williston Park. Reasonable rent and awesome landlords. Overnight street parking, even though it's a really nice area. Also very walkable. Literally like 2 minutes from the LIE AND Northern State, Herricks/Old Country Rd., Willis and Hillside Avenue are a few blocks away, Searingtown and Shelter Rock Rds. also like 2 minutes, 5 mins to Jericho Tpke. ...lots of different types of nearby churches, temples, grocery stores, great school district(s), salons, gyms, parks, etc., close to Roosevelt Field....also very convenient to at least 2 train stations

I love, love, love it here...and would love to be a home-owner around here someday.

FH teaches in Queens, and I teach in northern Nassau

I called a realtor about a place in Glen Oaks and thought she was trying to get rid of this place (current Williston Park apartment) when she said the other place had sold and that this was available. I was wrong. We just are pretty ideal tenants and had good timing I guess (no pets currently, no smoking, no children, steady/good income, etc.) It's much more space and much better maintained than places we've gone to see that were listed for significantly more money. If you want, FM me, and I'll look for the realtor's number. She's from around here and may know of something similar.

I grew up in Floral Park too, btw..and it's also fantastic. :) Definitely convenient in terms of the LIRR...not as convenient as where I am in Williston Park when it comes to the highway

I agree with Plainview, Hicksville, Bethpage and Levittown. (although Levittown isn't part of the town of Oyster Bay and you'd have to pay to park at a lot, where as if you're TOB it's 20 bucks a year to park at the station)

I live in Hicksville and I go to Queens weekly to see my family and it takes 25 minutes w no traffic. I commute to and from Midtown to work. I leave work at 4:30pm and am in my driveway at 5:45pm. This is including two subway stops from Penn Station. It's not a bad commute and I get to nap twice a day! Very comfy ride.

Forgot to mention, those towns are close to LIE and Northern State. It's smack in the middle of the island.

I lived in Bethpage and commuted to Bklyn everyday. Not too bad a ride. Of course I worked alllllllllll the way by Mill Basin so the commute was an hour and a half
