Please help with maitre'd tipping question

Original post by kristin597

My RH gave us a 'recommended' amount we should tip the maitre'd. I nearly fell off my chair. Would anyone mind sharing what they tipped or are planning on tipping? I'm just trying to figure out if I'm completely out of touch with 'tipping norms'. Thanks in advance ladies.

I think you should tip what you feel is fair and based on how well the run your event. That ebing said, I was told the norm was $1.5-$3 a person. I tipped about 350-400. I dont rememebr how much exactly...

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question

from what i know, also from the fact that i know ppl who worked at RH's. Waitstaff will not usually see the tip you give to the maitre'd. As far as the 20% gratuity or service charge, the waitstaff does get a salary for the time they are there, its not alot from what i know, but the 20% is definitely not used as a tip to the waitstaff but used as salary. In the 20% or 18% like i paid bc i booked before it was changed to 20%, it also goes towards other 'SERVICES' that the rh provides you with.

Like i said, i was told the banquet manager gets a percentage of what you tip the maitre'd, which would make sense, just dont know how much exactly.

Bridal attendant gets tipped separately, they also dont see anything from your tip to maitre'd.

See this is what I was thinking originally, like $3-4 per person, maybe a bit more if I really felt that he was great. My RH told me that they 'recommend' giving $1000

My FH thought I was having a stroke bc I could barely speak, lol.

R u kidding me!!! I'm getting married at JT and def. NOT giving $1000 for the maitre'd.

I'm having 175-200 people at my wedding and I had budgeted $500-$550., which is almost $3pp The bridal attendant I'm thinking of tipping $150-$200.

yeah definitely NOT giving a $1000 either. They don't need nor deserve $1000 for what they do. I know they work hard, but come on they aren't serving every table the food etc. like the waiters are.

But I guess I am going to start $2.50-3.00 per person and then go from there if they are great that night.

You're joking, right? They don't NEED or DESERVE that much for what they do??? Just so you know, the Maitre'd absolutely DOES NOT keep the entire tip. In fact, they keep a fraction. It is disgusting to me how people just assume that they are keeping the whole thing and these poor guys who are working so hard for YOUR WEDDING pay the price.

WELL..... That is just MY OPINION From speaking with my 2 sisters who worked for a long time at a RH hall and one of my sisters was a bridal attendant and almost was a maitre'd she just wasn't old enough according to them to be one. And I understand they do a lot for the wedding. but seeing the work my sisters had to do the hours they put in and what other things besides serving food that they had to do NO I DON'T BELIEVE THE MAITRE'D DESERVES $1000 and the wait staff NOTHING!!!!!! I know they get paid a salary but believe me it is NOT good and most waitstaff do not get tipped (my sisters maybe came home 10x with tips in the 3 1/2 years they worked at that one RH.)

i think i can guess about how much they suggested, i remember what JT told me as they suggested tip. It definitely is more than the norm of $3 per person.

Yea, it seems to be quite a bit more than the norm. Im all for compensating someone when they do a good job, especially people in the food/restaurant business as I have worked on tips. But I couldn't see paying thaaat much.

well remember it is suggested so give what youre comfortable giving.

Dh was in charge of tips, i didnt have time before the wedding to do it. So the day of i told him to handle it too, he even gave more than what they suggested

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question

I worked catering for Giorgio's and the money was split by the manager to us, so I was not sure if we all got even amounts. It is long hours though, requiring you to clean up after and be there early to set up. It is at least a 12 hour day. With waitressing, the pay was less than $3/hour. I personally think tipping has gotten way out of hand. I go into supermarkets and they have tip buckets, same with Dunkin Donuts. I feel like everyone expects to be tipped. No more doing nice things to be nice, they expect to be tipped or tipped better. I can't fathom how much tipping should be for the wedding. It seems as though everyone has their hand out. I was just discussing this with FH. We have $1.50 pp mgr fee and 18% service charge and I guess we will have to tip the mtrd and the attendant as well as the dj? the photographer? the videographer? the florists? Who else? It just doesn't end.

I know someone in here said something about the chef ...

We are tipping our chef -- about $150-$200. I never thought to do this either UNTIL a chef friend of ours told us to. He said you will be suprised the difference if you take two minutes -- go in the back get the chef say thank you and hand him some cash.

Especially since we have some serious allergies that need to be looked after.

i dont know what we're doing. i think our rh said all tips were included (not including the attendants).

i think it all depends if its included, whether they do much of anything that day, if u have a lot of stuff/details, and if it's split with the wait staff.

Maybe back in 1990 the MD kept the whole tip but I can assure you they all split it now. Maybe you don't realize the stress involved in managing these waiters (most are kids out of college and dont give a sh*% about your wedding... just about when their next smoke break is)... its the MD who goes and finds them to get you the service you have at your wedding... its the MD who is there hours before you even take your 1st picture getting your room ready... following all little instructions on how many bells to put on each chair and the angles they want the number frames facing the exact lighting, all the do's and dont's. And that's not including making sure Uncle Mel gets a vegeterian meal and there is no salt on Aunt Marges fish, knowing when to stop the DJ based on the flow of the party... when and how to cut your cake... most people have no clue and think they just stand there like idiots... and how about dealing with all your drunk guests and their nonsense...

THE MD makes sure your entire night is flawless Just seeing them smiling in the room and waving their hands around to waitstaff to tell them when to serve and pick up food is about 3 % of what they do durning the 12 hour shift.... If everyone gave the MD $2 a head, weddings will be ruined b/c no MD wants to work for such a meager amount. You get one chance at that day going perfect and its the MDs job to make that happen! If your day is great , its because of him not because a waitor brought out your families food and brought Uncle Charlie steak sauce when he asked for it!

And dont be fooled, they get paid a decent hourly rate & get tipped out my the MD and alot of times by your own guests and you never even know about it. Here's an idea, why don't you work as MD ... see how stressful it is and then come on here and tell me they dont earn that money... which they have to give 3 quarters of away! Since the MD is held accountable if your wedding goes wrong then he should be compensated equally.

OK well first off you tell me to go work as an MD...HAVE YOU!? You just said your Fh has. OK WELL I SAID MY SISTERS HAVE WORKED AT VENITIAN YATCH CLUB which is a very nice high end hall..and they didn't work there in 1990 so thanks for that history about 1990 and whta they did. My sister just stopped working there this past winter!!!! And she said she NEVER saw any of that money that the MD made from the wedding/parties. She would get her check and it would definitely not be what I call a GOOD paycheck for all the work she did. And she was never tipped. Like I said if she came home w/ a tip maybe 10 times outta the many days she worked there that was ALOT.

And yes I understand the MD does alot but nothing worth $1000 that is what I am saying. I don't think they deserve $1000 extra on their paycheck. I just think it is ridiculous to think we SHOULD tip these workers so much money for what they do. It's their JOB!!!! And yes alot of what they do helps our wedding days go well. But if they weren't there it doesnt mean our day would be sh*t.

And I am talking to my sister right now actually and she said that she never received money from an MD as tips. She had received a tip from a bride and groom ONCE and the bride and groom tipped every waitstaff member, bridal attendant and MD seperately. I know if I am tipping the wiatstaff I would give it to them individually because how do I know the Maitre'd will give it to them at the end of the night. And my sister said she can't even remember how many parties she worked where the waitstaff was incharge of making sure the chair covers were on the chairs correctly, the correct amount fo tables were set up and the had to turn over one room after the next for multiple parties in the matter of a 1/2 hour. AND SHE WASN'T A MD doing this she was a waiter. And she wasn't ready to go out for a smoke break and not care about what has to get done (actually that is a little stereotypical of you to say since not all people who work at RH's are college students who smoke!!)

So why I do say they dont deserve $1000 for one party that is MY OPINION. And I respect YOUR OPINION about thinking they do deserve that and that you think I am being ridiculous but whatever this is how I feel. But from having my two sisters just working for a RH recently for awhile and my brother as well working for one I see what they say and see their first hand experience just as yuo see your FH's. Nothing wrong with that!!!

Ok first of all, 1990 was just used to make a point, it wasn't an actual date I was referencing. I was like eight in 1990 and can't know that for sure- lol. I just mean a long time ago.

Your quote above says you dont think they deserve the extra $1,000 in their paycheck. What you don't seem to realize is that even if you tip them $1,000, they might get to keep $300 or so, not even! They give the rest to the house ( which then gets split among others, or kept by the establishment, depending on which hall it is). Imagine what they get to keep if you tip them a small amount ( $2 per head) almost nothing! And yes, I can ASSURE you that your wedding would be SH&T without your maitre'd, unless you have a DOC or someone else running around all night. It would be CHAOS.

All Im saying is give these people a little credit, and dont come on this website and make it sound like these guys are stuffing $1,000 in their pockets at the end of the night! That's incredibly misleading to girls on here who dont know how it works. Just because your sister didnt make tips as a waitor at the Venetian Yacht Club, does not mean all MD's keep all the $ to themselves!

And I only told you to 'go work as an MD' bc you obviously cant understand the concept of what they actually do. I never worked as an MD but know a lot about it since my FH used to do it.

I respect everyone's opinions but its not fair to say they keep this $ and mislead people.

I think you're speaking from a very limited point of view - the view of someone who worked at whatever hall your FH works/worked at. I confronted my BM and asked her about the tips - my MD's tip is NOT split w/the BM or the wait staff or anyone else - it is for the MD who splits that tip with her personal MD assistant. The bridal attendant is tipped separately. Those are the only two people who work at Land's End that need to be tipped independently. Land's End suggested $2-$4 per person and they said it is entirely based on how I feel about it. They didn't even make the suggestion until I asked.

Bottom line - I think it works differently at each place. While the place your FH worked might have forced them to split his tip with everyone, that's not the case everywhere else. And as far as the fact that MDs wouldn't work if they only got tipped $2/head...that's BS. Brides wouldn't be able to get married if every single bride no matter her circumstances was forced to tip at least $1k.

You tip what you CAN. You don't break your bank to give a tip. If you only tip $500 (LIKE I AM DOING) then that is a good tipped based on your circumstances. As I shell out $10k in a final payment to my hall - it feels near impossible to come up with an additional $1k, and I can't do it so I'm not going to do it. PERIOD.

I would say this.
If your Maitre'd is amazing, tip them what you want too.
We tipped him i think it was 300 in the beginning and we said if you do a good job you will get more.
If not, then this is all you are going to get.

He did awesome, so we gave him i think 4 or 500 more.

I understand your point about 1990 I am sorry if I came off snotty. I repsect your opinion on this matter.

But I let me sister read both our posts last night. She even told me (because she did work at some other halls not just VYC) and she said most MD's DO NOT SHARE THEIR TIP!!! She knows that for a fact. Maybe the hall your FH worked at he did, or maybe he was a generous guy and felt the waitstaff and others deserved part of his tip. And believe me my sister said their salaries weren't half that bad.

but she told me she is 100% sure not all MD's split their tip from the parties they do. And yes my sister and my brother also said that they did alot of what you said the Maitre'd does- such as making sure the place cards are on the table correctly and that the chair covers are done etc. etc. Plus my sisters also said there is a supervisor who stands at the tables when the food comes out and the salads, pastas to make sure the waitstaff is doing it right, while the MD is in the kitchen for much of the night. And that is the only person the MD would split their tip with. And I do not think I am giving misleading information. my sisters and brother have all worked at a hall MY INFO IS NOT MISLEADING. I am not telling you your info is misleading that is just from their experience. So NO telling me to go work for a hall as a MD and then come back on here and tell the truth. I have the truth from my sisters. MOST MD's DO NOT SPLIT THE TIP THEY MAKE!! And that is according to my family that I know have experienced it and your information is according to your FH so I don't think either of us is wrong. Maybe your FH has had that experience but my sisters have had differnet. So everyone should maybe check with their OWN HALL and ask if their MD WILL SPLIT THEIR TIPS!!!

Not all halls are the same so we all have to ask!!! But I do still think tipping them $1000 for one night is ridiculous!! I am giving what I can and not breaking the bank for it. They are just doing their job and if they do a great one then I will definitely tip them more. And my wedding definitely would be just as fine if my maitre'd wasnt there because I trust my hall in general to make it so.
