Seems this is a hot topic lately. I am registering online mostly and am looking for dinnerware that will go with whatever decor I decide to decorate in. We are moving in the fall of 2009 and will most likely buy a house in NH, and since I have no idea what style the kitchen will be or how I will want to decorate, I want to get plates that will look nice in any decor, but I do not want plain white. I looked at b&w designs, like big florals .. they are nice but I am not sure they would go with the design we like (simple clean lines, maybe a little rustic, nothing really frilly. HELP! I looked at macy's and bbb, where I am currently registered, and nothing really stands out! I looked at crate and barrel, jcpenney, williams sonoma, pier 1, bloomies ... nothing!
If anybody has registered for neutral dinnerware that's not PLAIN, please post a pic! I need ideas. A lot of the neutral stuff I see is very, very plain.

hmmm - I am a big Pfaltzgraff fan. There's a white pattern that is very beautiful in person. I know you said no white but this one has a pretty pattern/texture to it:

We DID want plain white, modern trendy dinnerware. We ended up getting white square dishes with white salad plates, and then we also bought colored salad plates (a slate blue, and a tan) that we can change in and out. they had tons of different colors to choose from, so you could always go that route and either buy your accent plates down the road, or buy a set you like now and then but another color accent plates to match your decor.
And these are really random but we have one set of these from Costco and love them! they aren't our regular dishes but the shape is great for a lot of things (a low shallow bowl)

you might want to check out THESE as well. they come in tons of colors! we got a set of all white square dishes and got salad plates and bowls from this set in taupe and blue. We figured that would go with anything, and we usually eat on salad plates so it's nice to have extras. (we also have white salad plates from our set)
we figure we can always pick up accent plates in other colors to mix and match down the road if we want
This is mine i figured It would match pretty much any color.
I got this one too but mine has round plates with the black on the outside going into the creamy color in the center of the plate. I think it's called Sango Black??

I saw these ... I am not a huge fan of the square plates, but I do like the colors - would match anything. Thanks for making me reconsider!
