Police Wives

I figured wecould start our own thread that no one else would want to read! There are enough of us I think, to start one.

There is a website called www.policewives.org that isn't remendously helpful for our purposes, but they have cool merchandise etc. Might be fun to check it out.

Anyone have anything to contribute? I figure we do our research first, see what's out there in the way of NYPD support, and go from there. Maybe a website is the best way to get started, maybe holding a meeting somewhere if we get enough interest, spreading by word of mouth....I would say our objectives would be support for each other, and most importantly, the Department. We could hold fundraisters, organize book and toy drives etc...

I think this is a great idea. Let me know what I can do to help. I will start doing some research to see if there is anything set up now that would be something we would want to get involved in. It would be nice to have something on Long Island for all of us NYPD wives that live here (which I believe is a lot).

Re: Police Wives

We should also see if there are ways to get petitions started for various issues like trying to get the DA to go for the death penalty with these animals that executed those officers. And to try to get it to be a given when someone shoots a cop, they go to death row.

Re: Police Wives

Exactly, Liz. That's what I mean. VIsible support, emotional support, financial support (for widows and orphans etc), making a name in the Dept...

Why don't you get in touch with the PBA union to see if anything is in place yet?

Rachel, I will definately check out that website. I know my DH is going to think this is crazy when I tell him about it....Oh Well, I think support is something us NYPD wives could really use these days! Count me in for whatever necessary!

Re: Police Wives

I think this says it all:
What Is A Cop's Wife?

A cop's wife is a woman who is married to a man who is 'married' to his job, his partner, and his badge. A cop's wife can usually be found cooking breakfast at midnight, picking up his uniform at the cleaners, and spending nights alone.
A cops wife must be a good listener, not questioning him. She must be understanding when he goes out for a beer with his buddies, doesn't feel like taking her to the movies, or has an exam to study for.

A cop's wife must live with shift work, lonely holidays, bad jokes, ulcers and alcohol, bulletproof vests, and fixed incomes. She is used to words like rape, robbery, assault, and child abuse. She is familiar with night school, stakeouts, overtime and being on her own.

Most women are not born or raised to be a cop's wife; it is something that they have chosen to do. Some can and others cannot. She will spend each day learning, listening to, and loving a man that few people respect and most others hate.

A cop's wife makes beds, breakfasts, and love to a man who spends more time with junkies, hookers, informants, pimps, and partners than he does her. She attends dinners, meetings, and sometimes funerals.

A cop's wife watches as the man she loves grows old before his time, watches him become cold and unfeeling, but she will remain his friend, wife and lover. She will always be these things to him, but she also knows he is first, A COP.

When a wife kisses him as he leaves for work, she will make a slient wish that he will return to her. And everytime there is a knock at the door, she will pray it is not the Chief of Police and her husbands partner coming to say kind things about her husband, how brave he was, how dedicated he was.

Being a cop's wife means lots of trust, love, and worry, but when he says, 'I love you,' it makes it all worthwhile.

Re: Police Wives

I think we should all print that cop's wife one and put it somewhere that you'll see it everday. I love that poem!

This is one I wrote that I posted on the other thread as well. I wrote it in 6th grade when my dad's friend(a cop) was killed. My dad was a detective and just retired last year.

Fear & Fright
Every Night as I turn out the light, my heart is filled with fear and fright. In the morning as I pick up the paer, a picture of a cop shot down to the ground. I wonder when it will ever end, the pain this world bestows. Now, I understand that this world has it’s highs and it’s lows. I go on the avenue and see all the dealers, pushing their drugs and being so fearless. Looking to my left and then to my right, I try to get away. This all happens in one single day.As the day turns to night and I’m in my bed all snug, I realize I forgot to give my dad a kiss and a hus. Should I bother? Yes, for tomorrow that cop on the front page may be my own father.

Re: Police Wives

someone emailed this.....some of it is so true
what do you think? Let your FH and DH's read too but they probably got it already -I think its being passed around the cops lol
The NYPD is hiring!!!!
So you want to join the NYPD? Just read the following, and sign at the bottom.
#1. You have the right to remain silent. Very silent, for the next 20 years, or until you retire, resign, or get fired. You will not be entitled to your own opinions, and if you are caught having an opinion of any kind, you could lose anywhere from 1 to 30 vacation days, depending on how strong your opinion is…. or, you could be suspended and/or fired.
#2. When we say so, and ONLY when we say so, you will NOT have the right to remain silent. This only applies if the NYPD believes that you have done something substantially wrong. For example…you pay 65 cents for a 75-cent cup of coffee, you fail to voucher a nickel that you find in a police vehicle, or you make an honest mistake on a report you filled out. Then the NYPD reserves the right to call you down for an 'interview', where you will be the subject of a departmental and/or criminal investigation, you will need an attorney, and you MUST answer any and all questions to investigators, even if it is self-incriminating. If you refuse, you're fired!! If you answer incorrectly, you're fired!! If you lie, you're fired!! If, by giving honest and truthful statements to investigators, you subsequently incriminate yourself, you're fired!! We don't have to do any of the investigatory work here; you will do it for us. We will cleverly disguise this type of interview as a 'GO15', which we will implement as a department procedure, making it exempt from your constitutional rights. Oh, we know all about that little thing known as the United States Constitution, and the rights afforded to even the most violent career criminals, but if you want to work for the NYPD, this doesn't apply to you.
#3. Even though many people in New York City have been convicted of crimes, they still have the right to vote for the man who will run their city, the Mayor. This man will make every and all decisions pertaining to your job, your salary, and you're quality of life. However, if you try to make a better life for you and your family by moving to a different county, you will lose the right to vote for your own boss. As a reward for you losing this right, we will then charge you a city waiver tax, which will be automatically deducted from your paycheck.
#4. We are now in the process of passing a law, which will dictate where you are allowed to live. If this passes, and you wish to work for the NYPD, you MUST live in one of the 5 boroughs. This means that you will be forced to pay $1800 a month in rent, or purchase a house for $400,000 on your $34,000 per year salary. Impossible you say? Don't worry; the NYPD has a program that will help you accomplish this. It's called the 'Cop next door' program. We will give you a low interest mortgage, as long as you live in the following areas. Bedford Stuyvasant, East New York, Brownsville, or the South Bronx. Along with the privilege of living in the city's highest crime areas, your children will be able to go to school in one of the worst school districts in the entire state. Plus, as an added bonus, under this program, all of your neighbors will know you're a Police Officer, enabling you and your family to become directly involved in any and all criminal activity or situation on, or in the vicinity of your block.
#5. You may be one of the departments most highly decorated veterans. However, if a cracked out prostitute stumbles into the precinct and says that you harassed or threatened her…. your guns will be immediately removed, you will be placed on modified assignment, which means that you will be answering phones, you will not be allowed on the street to do your job, and you will not be able to make the necessary overtime to make a car, mortgage payment, or a child's tuition. . In addition, if anyone at all makes a complaint about you, no matter how small, and even if through a thorough investigation it turns out to be completely false…we will still keep it in your personal record with the department, delaying, if not preventing a promotion, or transfer to a desirable detail.
#6. The NYPD does not want you involved in any off duty situations. If you must take police action, go to the nearest phone and dial 911. If the NYPD finds out that you were involved in an off duty situation in which you were personally involved, you will NOT be indemnified by the NYPD, you risk a lawsuit, and possibly the loss of your personal property including your house. For example, if you and your wife are out somewhere, and a man approaches your wife and violently assaults her, you cannot do anything about it because you will be personally involved. You must go to the nearest phone, call 911, and await the arrival of the uniformed police. If you chose to take matters into your own hands, you risk being sued and losing your job.
#7. If anyone wants to ask you a question about something pertaining to police procedure, policies, or anything about you, you are NOT allowed to answer. You must contact the Deputy Commissioners office of Public Information, inform them of the question, what your answer will be, and if you will be on camera. They will then tell you what you are allowed to say, if anything, and will want a full copy of the tape, article, or paper in which you were quoted. Yes, we've heard of that 'freedom of speech' nonsense, but that only applies to criminals, liberal protestors who cost the city millions with their demonstrations, and people who burn the United States flag…not to you.

#8. We realize that you might have had a life and a family before you joined the NYPD, but if you choose to pursue a career with us, you will have to give that up. If you have your sisters wedding to go to this Sunday, tell her you cannot make it, the Puerto Rican day parade is more important. Sure, we will be sending 6000 cops, but it is imperative that YOU are there. You are going to your Godchild's christening? Not any more you're not!! We have protestors in Manhattan who are against the United States spending money on homeless veterans. They would rather see the money go to Muslim extremists intent on killing us. You must be there. You say your daughter is graduating? Tell her you can't make it; there is a festival in Flushing Meadow park, the Ecuadorians are having a soccer game, and we need to send 1000 cops to make sure nobody steals their ball. What's that? Your grandmother died? Sorry, it is a Muslim holiday and we need to safeguard all the mosques so the people that are plotting terrorist attacks against us in the near future will have the freedom to do so.

#9. Quotas? There is no such thing. You might have heard that the NYPD has certain quotas such as, at least one arrest, and 25 summonses per month, but rest assured, this is media hogwash. It is illegal for any organization or company to engage in a quota system, so we propose this compromise. We will ask you to fulfill a 'suggested goal', such as one arrest, and 25 summonses per month, if you cannot reach your 'suggested goal', we will have no other choice then to either re-evaluate your current situation, and re-assign you to a tour where you cannot work your second job, and ultimately will not be able to pay your mortgage, or a tour that completely conflicts

If that doesn't work, we will locate where you live, and assign you the furthest possible distance from your home, making sure you have to pay a toll. Who says there's a quota?

#10. Last but not least, you will hear rumors about your probation lasting 2 years. This is a misprint. What we meant to say was...20 years. We don't care how much you give to this department in your career, or what sacrifices you have to make to do it. Given the slightest iota of a chance, we will fire you. Preferably in your last year, this way you would have paid into your pension for 19 years, 11 months, and 29 days, and then we can take it all away from you.

Now that we have advised you of your lack of rights, please sign your life away.

Prayer For A Policeman

Walk with him tonight, dear God, along each darkened street.

Walk with him tonight, dear God, along his lonely beat.

Keep him happy through the night and please make sure he's warm.

And guide him to a sheltering door in case there comes a storm.

And let him know, though he's not here, my prayers are free from fright.

Because, dear God, I know so well you're on his beat tonight.

My fiance is a cop too and I am also an attorney for the City and I defend cops that are sued for false arrest, assaults etc. I couldn't agree with you girls more!!

We are actually donating to PBA Widows and Children's fund for the wedding and giving NYPD lapel pins to all the guests.

Re: Police Wives

rl - that is an AWESOME idea!

I'm going to the Emerald Society Party on Monday and I will try to do some networking there and see what I can glean. Probably not much, but we'll see. I sensed that FH wasn't too wild and crazy about this idea when I told him about it (the Police Wives thing) but a lot of that has to do with the mentality of the job, which is keep to yourself, don't draw attention, mind your own business type stuff. He is also a private person and has nightmare visions of his loudmouthed wife starting a group and begging everyone to join and being an annoying presence at various functions.

I thought about it a little more and thought that the group should definitely lean more towards the Support aspect, but know when to remain in the shadows, not hogging any spotlights etc. What we want to be is SUPPORT. For each other (privately) and publicly (for them). Go to rallies, go to 10-13 fundraisers (usually sick cops who have to take time off b/c of cancer, etc), organize fundraisers for Widows and Orphans, etc.
THe concept has yet to take a definite shape in my head, but its coming together. I should also speak to the PBA and see how they feel about an actual 'organized group.' They may strongly discourage it, at which point we would have to remain private.
My dream would be to have a recognized, supported, admired and respected auxiliary organization whose role would be viewed as Supportive. You guys following what I mean?
