PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

Original post by smara

I was going to save this for my review but I wanted to share it now:

I know this has probably been said or done before but I just wanted to pass on my own experiences post wedding. This was advice given to me by my older sister, She Said: 'On the day of your wedding things are going to go wrong, and the best thing to do is to let it roll off your back and don’t let it ruin your day -just have fun' And you know what, I listened and this is the best thing I could've ever done because my day was fanatastic, all I did was enjoy myself, enjoyed being with my new husband and around my friends and family. And ofcourse things did go wrong:

-I had an unvited guest at the ceremony and then she tried to go to the reception
-The grooms father walked down for the ceremony but didn’t come to the reception, hence his wife didn’t come (he was suppose to be introduced, my poor DH but he said screw him)
-At the Church they were suppose to play bridal march or whatever for the Bridal party and then switch it to Ave Maria for me. But No, Ave Maria was played for the whole thing – It was disappointing, I almost was going to have em change it or I wasn’t walking but then I was like what the hell am I doing , just go get married
-They left the extra flowers at the church
-About 10 ppl didn’t show up ( including almost a whole table)

In the End I just want you ladies to know that if you are relaxed and just let yourself have fun you will have the most memorable time. Don’t focus on the negative because you want to get the most of all the hard work, sweat, tears and even fights that you had over this wedding. In the end All Couples Deserve To Have Fun and Enjoy every minute of their Wedding!!

Thanks for reading, Past Brides please feel free to share your experience and thoughts!!

Thanks girls. My first instinct would be to probably cry if some of these things went wrong but I will keep reminding myself of the big picture, it's you and him always

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

Figuring my wedding was just recently, I can share. I had planned a lot and knew by the morning of my wedding what could be done was done. With that said, that doesn't mean things can't go wrong. Just remember you marrying the person you love. Everything else is just extra in the grand scheme of things.

I like the others here, also had things go wrong.

- The DJ company I used did a switcharoo on MC/DJ and the people I got looked like they never performed a wedding before.
- Two seconds before we are all ready to cut the cake...the maitre'd bumps into the table and knocks over the cake topper and it breaks on the dance floor.

We could have gotten annoyed that night...but we didn't let it. The cake topper was no big deal. It didn't cost a lot and the cake still tasted the way it was suppose to. The DJ Company well that was a bit harder but we definitly tried to ignore the lack of experience of these guys. (Though I would be deceiving you ladies, if I said we aren't doing anything about it. We are going to contact the company and file a complaint.)

My husband and I had a time of our life and everyone said that we looked geninuly happy the whole evening. My sisters were even suprised how well I didn't show annoyance.

So after this long post, remember it is about you and your husband...enjoy it becuase it definitly does go by fast that day.

Good luck to the future brides out there.

Great thread

-3 days before my wedding, I came down with the flu & it lasted through my wedding. I had not eaten a thing in 3 days, so my dress was big (nothing I could do). Made it through my wedding without getting 'sick' but I did not eat anything at my reception

-DH's cousin decided the week of the wedding that he was not coming anymore. Didn't even notice it at the wedding

-Incident happen with DH's family in regards to a 'cigar' picture that we had taken. Some family members were left out & big commotion was started. Luckily no one told us until after the HM was over

-Mom spilled champagne on her dress before church & she got so upset. We were able to fix that & you didn't even know anything happened

-My FG didn't make it down the aisle on her own. She still looked so cute & everyone got a smile out of her

-At the end of our reception, the dinners & VH hour items that were packed up by the hall for us never made it in the cars with us. We didn't notice until the next day. FT was nice enough to make us the dinners again!

With everything that happened, nothing too major, I still enjoyed every moment of my day & at the end, I was still married to my DH! Would not do the wedding over any other way!!!!

I agree with you all that things do go wrong and all you can do is enjoy your day.

-I was disapointed in the way my b'ok and the BM's bo'k looked (I don't think this is completely the florists fault, I was don't think I had a clear vision of what the b'ok's would look like and never asked for a sample), also flowers started to fall out of the BM b'ok and the FG basket during pictures.

-When our best man gave a speech (which was very nice), he got so nervous he fogot to toast us. So there was never a champange toast. DH & I just toasted each other and none of the guests really noticed until the wait staff started to take away the champange glasses.

-DH, my Dad and my brother all stepped on my dress at one point after the Church and I had foot marks on the back of my dress.

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

ooo this is a fun one
all this stuff means nothing now becuase we had a fab day but here are my snafus

- HATED my bouquet - not at all what i wase xpecting (I like it now)
- one of my bm's complained to anyone that would listen how expensive everything was - even tho i told her how much everything woulod cost beforehand AND made arrangements for her to stay with my family instead of spending $ at a hotel
- the flower i was supposed to wear in my hair did not work so my mom dug up something out of the basement (that ended up being fantastic)
- FSIL threw a fit in the AM becuase i didnt have rollers for her hair (??!?)
- FSIL had no control over the FG & RB the entire day - didnt help make sure the kids were ready or dressed properly.

BUT i smiled and bounced all day - i loved every minute of it!!

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

Hmmmmm lets see.....

-My dress suddenly grew to be a size too big......should have ate the week before!

-the limo guy was a jerk and pulled over to the side of the road and demanded that he collect (money was with my parents)

-there was an accident on sunrise hwy so the DJ didn't make it in time for my ceremony. Luckily Land's End had their own sound system.

-The wrong song was played for the bridal processional. I wanted The Wedding Song by Kenny G....they went down to cannon in d

-The microphone the Reverand was using kept cutting out so everyone missed the first word anytime someone had to speak.

-I had an distant relative crash my wedding and then tell me I should be honored that he did it.

My husband's step-brother (groomsman) decided to make a speech without telling us and it was a roast ripping on him which we thought was a little inappropriate

Other than all that it was the most perfect day and I wouldn't change a thing!

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

thats great advice to roll with whatever goes wrong on your day. if you focus on the negative you wont enjoy yourself...i had a few things not go quite so perfect, but i didn't let it get to me.

i forgot to put my earrings in for most of my getting ready pics and pics w/bm's at the house. luckily i remembered them halfway through.

my brother got in trouble before the ceremony for trying to feed the fish in the shark tank CHEESE he got from the bridal suite...so embarrassing.

the hall lost 2 tables of placecards and tried to blame it on me. i gave the cards to them in alphabetical order...the lost 2 whole tables, i don't see how that could be my fault. btw, it was 2 tables from my husbands side of the family. i found out about this from my mil minutes before i had to walk down the isle...last think i wanted to hear at that point was her complaining.

the video guy we used was a shooter for my bil who has a low budget videography studio. i told the guy ahead of time that i did not want his big bright light (his set up is straight out of the 80's) shining on people when they danced. i told him to ONLY video the special dances of which i gave him a list. he tried to use it during the ceremony (luckily, my husband put a stop to that before it started bc he knew i would flip out!) and he tried to video random dances...this light is like the sun its so bright. he got in the way of my photographer during the ceremony and he was in every picture of my ceremony. using him is my one regret.

but in hindsight, these things are minor. the only thing that still bugs me is the video guy.

eta i forgot that a lady my husband works with spilled her RED drink on my dress during CH. i didnt notice it right away, but the drink was a puddle in one of the bundles on my skirt. other ladies from his job helped clean it off with seltzer. i laughed it off.

I pretty much am not dealing with them, becuase these were the ppl that practically invited themselves and I saw like a week before or spoke to and were like yeah Im def. going

My DH father is out of our lives for good. I also forgot to add that since DH father didnt show up to the reception, O had to ahve my uncle walk in with DH's aunt. Which left my father and aunt to walk in by themselves. My Fathers wife got mad and had a face the whole time and was sitting outside like a miserable wench (up until this point I loved this lady and though she was the sweetest thing.) My fahter had a sour puss face, he couldnt even suck it up and dance or even come up to me and kliss me or say hello. Some Dad

Needless to say.. I just kept dancing and partying on with my DH

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

Oooh, this is fun. Honestly, not a ton went wrong, but some funny stuff happened:

1. My MIL made my veil and it fell off during my ceremony.
2. We HATED our (rent a) priest. He did this weird ceremony with the rings that he never told us he was doing and never told DH to kiss the bride (out loud, he mouthed it to him) so DH feels like it looks like he attacked me.
3. My SIL (who was 14) had EVERYONE giving her champagne. Including me, her mother, MY mother, my DH, her sister and MY sister....right infront of some of our born again Christin friends who don't even drink themselves.
4. Then she puked.
5. Something was up with the plumbing at Giorgio's, but I have to say, they handled that beautifully. George, Jr. unclogged the toliet in the bridal suite and someone fixed the men's room (didn't even know about that til later on)

That's about it. You gotta just laugh at these things.

I don't know for SURE that she puked. My other SIL told me she did, but sometimes she can tell tall tales.

If she did, only we know

Oh! I forgot two things:
6. My sister and my SIL (the drunky 14 year old) went to the bar and they carded my 23 year old sister and not the 14 year old!
7. My littlest SIL, who is 12 and was wearing a FLOWERGIRL DRESS (aka a white dress) went to the bar to get a drink for her mom and the bartender says 'You look a little young' and she goes 'I am the bride'. And he served her.

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

1. Upon arriving at Oheka a 15 year old tried to carry my dress inside from the car and when he looked like he was going to tip my mom grabbed it and carried it in.

2. My mom forgot her dress at home and my dad had to go back and get it.

3. I realized I did not put extra deodorant, but was already in my dress so I attempted to put some on and dropped a huge blob on my dress (I was in it for literally 5-minutes) It left a stain that I had to look at all day!

4. My florist forgot to set-up my runner with rose petals, and did not bring enough boutiners for all of the guys, so we had to make them out of my throw-away bo-k for the readers and DH's step dad.

5. Guests were sneaking outside to watch us take pictures and I was so upset that they were seeing my before they were supposed to! ( we took picturees before the ceremony)

6. DH's parents did not walk down the aisle for the ceremony.

7. At the reception people kept touching our cake to see if it was real......leaving tons of little fingerprints, and some broken sugar flowers.

8. My card box was to small and didn't fit all of the cards.... they were pertruding out of the top (we lost 3 of them as a result!)

9. DH's parents left the reception right after parent dances to go home and take care of their dog!

Aside from all of that it was the BEST day of my life and I enjoyed every single second of it and would not change a thing....well, except for the deodorant and the fact that my favorite LIW girl wasn't there!

That's great advice. Inevitably, I know things may go wrong on my wedding day. It helps to be reminded to not let things get to me. Thank you again.

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

My mishaps were not major, but they did annoy for a bit, and then were quickly forgotten about!!! You just have to roll with the punches and enjoy yourself.

1. In the am while getting ready one of my BMs started to b*tch at me & my MOH walked into my hotel room with a stank attitude the entire time.

2. My BP jumped on me in the limo complaining about how they didn't help me get ready (meantime the photographer said whoever was dressed to help me get ready, and NONE of them were)

3. Someone ripped my aisle runner before the ceremony started.

4. The DJ played the wrong song for the processional, but I changed it the day before, so I can't really fault him for that.

5. DH & I were both sick on our wedding day & DH had almost no voice. You would have never known though had you seen us.

6. We had a total of 13 no shows, and only 2 people contacted us to apologize. We had to contact everyone else to find out what happened.

7. The hall broke my 'we do' letters & tried to fix it.

8. The hall forgot to bring out cupcakes for 2 people's birthdays.

9. We never got to take any pics around the hall or on the grounds.

10. My MOH somehow managed to get my photographer to take a picture of just her family.

Despite all of these things, we enjoyed ourselves to the fullest. Granted I don't speak to my MOH as much as I did before, but that's not a big deal to me.

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

- MU artiste took TOO long to do my hair and MU so I had to miss my CH then some of my reception to take some pics (but no big deal)
- My SIL asked the photographer to take pics of her family (but I had warned him already.... ha ha... I knew she would ask)
- I forgot to eat breakfast. The hall got me some pancake and a bagel. They were great!
- We had some no shows but they were emergencies so we understood.

Best:
- My FIL (RIP) took the left over of our cake. But the box moved on the way home. When we opened the box, the cake fell on the floor, on the bottom of my dress.... I ran to clean it up and yes it cleaned right away.. DH cleaned the cake crumbs everywhere (with the filling).... floor, cabinet door, countertop..... DH was so mad... I was hysterical laughing.. So no cake for us next year.

Thanks for this...people who have recently gotten married keep telling us to slow down and enjoy the day because it goes by so fast. I can be a bit of a control freak but I've made myself a promise that I won't let anything get to me that day.

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

Ohh! I want to share!

Well, first thing, my priest never said 'you may now kiss the bride.' DH and I weren't totally sure when to do it anyway, so we waited thinking it was coming up next or something. Then the end of the ceremony came, the priest never said it. And he also never announced us 'for the first time as Mr. and Mrs. H' Just said you may now go in peace, and then the organist started to play the processional music. Yup, no kiss, no announcement.

BUT! It made for this really cute moment outside the church when my sister stood in front of us and yells 'You may now kiss the bride!!!' We kissed and all our guests were standing around us waving the ribbon wands....needless to say, some awesome pictures to boot.

THEN we get to the reception and the DJ announces us as 'Mr. and Mrs. Kyle and Kimberly (my maiden name)' I was kinda miffed at first, but I heard my mother say 'Once a (maiden name), always a (maiden name).' He did correct himself eventually and came over to us to apologize.

And lastly, our cake was pretty ugly. DH and I walked up to it when it was time to cut the cake and DH goes 'Holy basketweave Batman.' It was hysterical, and we just laughed it off. It still makes us laugh to this day when we look at those cake cutting pictures.

And much like all these other girls are saying, none of it mattered. I was way to high up on cloud 9 to care.

Re: PSA: For Brides-To-Be (A Little Long)

We were lucky and not too much went wrong, but we had a few things:

My girls took longer with their hair and makeup than expected, so I went over to the hall alone and waited for them. They were pretty late, and two of my BMs who didn't stay with me at the hotel the night before were even later. When they got there, my BMs just sat there and only my MOH helped me get ready. My mom didn't even show up until later, and I was hoping she would be there to help me get ready.

At the ceremony, my DH tried to put HIS ring on my finger instead of mine. But it was REALLY funny, and I just laughed. I still laugh when I see it on video.

The DJ made a bunch of mistakes. He asked everyone to join us in a dance when it was supposed to ONLY be the bridal party. But it was so cool having everyone on the dance floor that it didn't matter too much.

But he did cut the mother groom dance short, AND asked people to join in dancing with them immediately. THAT was NOT cool.

We added an extra hour onto our reception, but Jericho Terrace served cake and coffee so early that a lot of people left before the extra hour. The rest of us didn't dance at all, but just enjoyed each other's company and talked. It was nice to catch up with my college friends, though. I didn't really get to spend much time with them during the reception.

But overall it was a wonderful day!
