Good morning ladies, hope you're all doing well! So I hope this question isn't too personal! I LOVE talking and learning about different religions, so that's why I'm asking it.
Are you & FH the same religion? If not, or if one of you is more religious than the other, do you feel like that has affected your relationship at all? How has that affected or changed wedding plans? Do you think that it will cause issues in the future? What is the best thing about you & FH's religious differences or similarities?
I was raised Catholic; I attended Catholic school from pre-k to 12th grade, and the first college that I went to was a Jesuit University. For probably about 4 or 5 years, I considered myself an atheist. Then probably about 1.5 years ago I returned to the Catholic Church and was kind of into it. However, I had trouble reconciling my personal beliefs with those of the church.
So I now consider myself non-religious. I do believe in God, but I also believe in science. I wear a cross because I believe that Jesus was a great philosopher, but also a great man. I also feel a very deep spiritual connection-particularly to my Grandparents, who are all deceased. I think I eventually may seek out a Unitarian Congregation to join. I'm open to all religions, and I think there's truth & beauty, but also misconceptions, in & about everything.
Eric was raised by a Protestant father and a Jewish mother. He wasn't brought up in one as opposed to the other; he was brought up celebrating the holidays of both. However, when I started attending Mass again, Eric got really into it. He was baptized, confirmed, and received communion during the Easter Vigil this year. He does not nesacarily follow every rule of Catholocism, but he is very religious otherwise.
When deciding where we wanted to have the ceremony for our wedding, he wanted it in a Church, I did not. We wound up picking a venue in CT, and we had both told ourselves that if we did that, we would have the ceremony on site. Our RH is RIGHT off a major parkway, so we don't want to turn something simple into a major production. (Meaning everyone won't have this RH that's right off the pkway, but then have to go exploring through the state to find a church). However, we are going to try and find a Catholic priest that will perform the ceremony. If not, we will find a Christian minister.
If we hadn't of booked in CT, I'm not sure how that would've played out. I would've been willing to get married in a Church, but probably not have been thrilled. I don't think it would've caused a fight b/t us though, because we're both very respectful of each other's different beliefs. I don't think it will cause any problems in the future, except maybe when we have children. I have no problem whatsoever with them being baptized and raised Catholic. I also had such a positive experience at Catholic schools, so that is where I would probably send them. I guess the only issue would be that they would probably start to recognize that 'Mommy goes to a different church' and 'Mommy believes in different things'. But we'll work it out. Also, I plan on celebrating all major holidays that I am aware of- Christmas, Hanukah, Passover, Easter- so the kids will be seeing a difference b/t Church Holidays and 'Mommy' Holidays.
The best thing about our religious/spiritual beliefs is that we both believe in eternal life-life after death-, and that lets us believe in eternal love!
SORRY this was SO long LoL, I guess I have a LOT to say.

I'm def more religious then FH, but that doesn't mean I attend mass every Sunday. We are getting married in a Catholic church b/c my parents really wanted that for me. FH could care less, but he's doing it all to please my family.
In the future, I don't believe that this will change anything. He knows that we are raising our children Catholic and that is something we both agreed on.

Both FH and i are Roman Catholic.
Neither of us are 100% into it so it actually works pretty well. The last time either of us has been to church is for weddings and/or funerals. Bad i know... but we don't eat meat during Lent on Fridays!!! lol.

Re: QOTD 05/19/09!
i was not really raised in any religion. Both of my parents were raised protestant, but didn't have my sister or I baptised or brought to any type of religion classes, church etc. We do celebrate Xmas and easter and all though.
FH was raised catholic. Went to church, was confirmed and all that. However, as he has gotten older he no longer practices his religion.
I always told FH that if he wanted to get married in a catholic church that I would have no problem and would do nething i had to in order to be allowed (classes or signing something)....but FH had no desire so we are getting married in the RH.
We haven't had any problems since neither of us are relgious but we do celebrate the same holidays.

Re: QOTD 05/19/09!
We are the same religion (Catholic) and I think I may be a teeny tiny bit more religious than he is. (example, I HAVE to get married in a church, he doesnt feel that we need to be married in front of a priest...) We dont really talk about religion much because we both know that we have faith in a higher power and that we want our children to be raised in the 'religous' enviroment that we were raised in. Now dont get me wrong, we are both the most liberal catholic's you can ever meet but we do believe that there is something out there and that faith can get you through the hard times.

Re: QOTD 05/19/09!
I am catholic...Went thru all catholic schools as well...I def believe in god but I consider myself to be much more spirtual than religious....
Scott is Jewish...has not been raised with any traditions what so ever! He is not religious at alll...but also spirtual! He will celebrate all the holidays with us and he gets really into it (which works great!)
I thought i would get married at the RH....but it didnt fly with my family...so finding a house of god that will marry us hasnt been the easiest search!
FMIL has quite a few times commented on that fact that i am not jewish, which cracks me up bec she raised her children with NO traditions! but i just take it in stride!!!
My family has accepted it all the way!!

FH and I are both Catholic. I went to Catholic school my entire life and when I was a kid I always went to church with my family. FH doesn't really have that background. We both started going to mass together a few months ago, so religion is important to us. I definitely wanted to get married in a church and FH did too. I don't think religion has played that big of a part in our relationship though, since we are both the same thing there is not much to discuss, fight, or compromise about.

We are both Catholic, but FH's family are very hardcore and my family is not at all. His parents go to church every sunday and for all holidays. The only time i go to church is for weddings, funerals, christenings. FH is unlike his family though he does not go to church with them and did not want to get married in a church which worked for me

Re: QOTD 05/19/09!
Are you & FH the same religion? * No. I'm Catholic and he's Episcopalian.
If not, or if one of you is more religious than the other? * Not really. We're both faithful, but we don't really go to church or confession. We're 'twice a year' religious people.
Do you feel like that has affected your relationship at all? * Not at all. Again, neither of us are really practicing, and Catholic and Episcopal aren't all that different.
How has that affected or changed wedding plans? * Not much. Originally we were trying to decide which church to get married in. We actually wanted to get married at the Episcopal Cathedral in Garden City where his parents attend. But we were told we had to be active parishioners for 9 months for them to even consider us. The church is in Garden City and we live in Massapequa. There was no way we were driving to and from Garden City every Sunday just so we could get married there. So we quickly changed our minds and decided to go with my Catholic church for the wedding.
Do you think that it will cause issues in the future? * I don't really think so. We've already discussed children and whether the children are baptized Catholic or Episcopal won't be a huge difference for us.
What is the best thing about you & FH's religious differences or similarities? * I guess that even though we're 'officially' of different religions, we're very much on the same page. Neither of us believes we need to go to church to pray each week but we both still believe in God.

Re: QOTD 05/19/09!
I guess.
I was baptized RC but NOT raised in the church, did not make sacraments. But I believe pretty much along the lines of Catholicism although I do not believe in going to Church (JMO).
FH was baptized RC as well, made all his sacraments and was involved in the Church growing up. Getting married in the Church was VERRYYYY important to FH, and raising our children to be Catholic is as well (although I still have reservations).

I was born and raised Catholic. Went to an all girl catholic high school...even went to a catholic nursery school. FH is catholic but is not religious. He was only ever baptized and never attends church. He would have preferred to skip the whole church thing but he knew I had to get married in a church.

We were both raised Roman Catholic but my family is much more religious. My dad is very active in our church, however, I dont attend mass on a weekly basis. FH was raised Roman Catholic however his views of our religion were kind of affected when he lost his younger brother a couple of years back.
We decided to get married at my Catholic church because its the way I always envisioned getting married and it was important to both me and my family. FH said he wasn't opposed or for getting married in my church, so being it meant so much to me, he is excited to get married there.

FH and I are both Catholic...and both went to Catholic HS. FHs father is Jewish and mother is Catholic, and FH chose to be raised as a Catholic (apparently the parents made it the kids decision on how they wanted to be raised). We will be getting married in the Catholic Church. FH only goes to church on special occasions...as do I, although I wish I could go to church more often...

FH and I are both Roman Catholic. Although we are not religious, it was important to the both of us and especially our families to get married in the church. We would also like to be able to baptize and raise our children Catholic and I am not sure if you can do this or if you have to go through a bunch of paperwork to do this if you were not married 'before the eyes of the church'. Also some members of our families are very religious. FH's brother is getting married at the RH at his wedding coming up later this month, and FH's parents were really, really disappointed in his and his fiancee's choice not to get married in the church. So we knew it would also make our families happy to get married in the church.

FH & I are both Catholic. we will be getting married in Church because it is very important to me, FH would prefer to get married else where. i am much more into the faith then FH is. i don't go to church every Sunday but i do pray every night before going to bed. i am baptized, have received communion & confirmation. i was an alter server in grammar school & a Eucharistic Minister in high school. i went to Catholic school from pre-k till 12th grade. FH and I are both fairly religious. I am Lutheran Christian and he is Catholic. They are so similar they we havn't had a problem. We are getting married in a Lutheran Church, he was fine with it but was concerned some of his family wouldn't be. I believe they all are, however if we weren't having it in a church at all they would have probably been upset.

Re: QOTD 05/19/09!
Oh boy! After reading some of the replies I realize how uncomplicated my situation is.
We are both catholic. I was raised in catholic's schools, he wasn't. We both went to church every Sunday growing up. We happen to both have very religious parents, his mother even works for the church, and teaches religion and whatnot. It was just natural for me to get married in the church I went to school at, and I can't wait.
We know we both want to raise our children catholic. As adults, we barely EVER go to church, except for weddings and funerals. We have discussed, however, that when we have children, we will raise them the way our parents did.
