~~~*~~~*QOTD 4/1/13*~~~*~~~
I just want to start this off by saying thank you SO much to Delgie for making me this weeks BOTW! I'm so excited and I hope you all like my questions. Since today is my first day back at work after a very lovely spring break it made me think of my first question:
What do you do for a living and what is one thing you really can't stand about your job?
I'm a full time nanny and let me just start out by saying I absolutely, without a doubt, 100% LOVE my job. I watch 18 month old twin boys 45 hours a week, I've seen both of them take their first steps, and I actually miss them when I'm not at work. They adore me and I adore them, and I feel like I'm very lucky to have found the perfect family for me after working for a looney tune mom a couple of years ago.
Now for the things I don't like:
1. I'm working for first time parents so the dad can be a little paranoid. While that's totally okay and I'm sure I'll be the same way, he calls me at home A LOT. He'll call over the silliest things too! Once he called to tell me he felt like I was putting too much diaper rash cream on one of the boys. It's like dude, can't this wait until tomorrow morning?! Unless its some kind of emergency I REALLY don't want to hear from you LOL
2. The second thing I don't like about my job is a recurring problem that once again popped up yesterday. FH called his aunt yesterday to wish her and his uncle a happy Easter. Besides the fact this woman couldn't remember my name (seriously, after 3 years? Really?) she asked if I was ever planning on getting a 'real' job. Excuse me but I HAVE a real job. People are constantly getting on my case about this. Once a woman I had literally just met in a hair salon asked me why I was wasting my time with a 'silly job like that'. It's so frustrating and sometimes it makes me feel like these people are looking down on me.
At the end of the day I love what I do, but sometimes I just wanna knock people out for their stupid comments
Wow that's rude. Every job is a real job. I hate that question. I am a teacher by trade after being excessed I work as a bookkeeper for a contractor.
My boss is a jerk sometimes. Who doesn't hate that?
First of all Alyssa, you DO have a real job so don't let anyone tell you different. I've met au pairs in Manhattan that make more money that FH and I put together!
I'm a CAD designer, which is a branch of Fashion Design. I make prints and graphics for clothing. I absolutely LOVE my job!!! It's so rewarding seeing my design on a shirt or dress and it's super rewarding when I see someone on the street wearing it!
I agree with ladygoodman. The only thing I can do without is my boss sometimes. Like most people, I hate someone telling me what to do!
Thanks! I know, I hate that I constantly feel like I have to justify my career choice to people. Especially to his aunt who couldn't even remember my name! Grrrr....
I work for the NYPD (so does FH). There are plenty of things I can't stand about my job (lol), but what I can't stand the most is not being guaranteed to be off on holidays with my family. That really sucks, but believe or not, I'm used to it...
Thank you to you and your FH for all that you do! My father is retired NYPD and so is FFIL. FH is I'm law enforcement as well. The holiday thing really sucks so I completely understand, I'm getting use to it too though, I was already sorta used to it with my dad already.
I'm a probation officer for juveniles. What I really can't stand about my job is parents who blame everyone but themselves for their children getting arrested.
OMG Alyssa, I TOTALLY relate. I work in a restaurant, and while I make good money, I am constantly being asked when I'm getting a REAL job. Well, I'm not sure where the people who ask this are living, but here in America, the economy is horrible and I'm just happy to have a job that allows me to support myself! While I hate the clientele that I serve in this particular restaurant, I make more money than most entry level jobs, I don't have to work 40+ hours to do it, and I happen to be good at what I do!
Don't let people put you down about your job. Being a nanny sounds like it's an awesome job!!
I have worked as a receptionist/administative assistant for many years(8yrs) and about 21/2 years ago I transitioned into nannying simply because I loved the idea of working less hours and making more money. I have been doing it for quite some time and am working now although the hours are minimal and the kids are great it just isn't enough money. I have been looking for both another nanny position and office jobs. I feel like working for the wrong family/kids sometimes puts me off. I always think to myself I hope this isn't going to change my view on wanting to become a parent! I definitely feel more prepared though. It is hard for me to want to commit back to an office job because I would bust my butt all week and wouldn't bring home what I do now. Ahh such a tricky situation. One thing I can't stand about my job is when they have completely ridiculous requests. To each their own I suppose.
I'm supposed to be a teacher. I was for 5 years then got excessed and haven't been able to find much more than subbing since. I was an afterschool Nanny for two of Jr. Bridesmaids for two years. But I needed something more. Right now I'm a 3 day a week nanny. Love the kids, love the parents, just wish it was 5 days a week sometimes. But it's more than I was making and it's a reallly great family so I can't complain!!
I'm a marriage and family therapist, and I work at a Veteran’s center in Babylon. While I absolutely love being a therapist and helping veterans and their families my boss is a total control freak and loves to micro manage everything so sometimes that makes me crazy but other than that no complaints love my job!
Wow how rude! I am sorry you need to deal with those people. I bet your days are a Ton tougher than plenty of other professions - I probably couldn't handle it for more than a day!
I work in HR at a global management consulting firm. I love what I do, and my company, but some of the people I work with think the world revolves around them constantly! You can't treat some people poorly just because you think you're superior because you graduated from an Ivy League business school. Other than those few individuals, i love it!
I'm a paralegal in a medical malpractice law eirm in the city. I like it and can complain at times but not really as it pays the bills. I guess something has to be ok since I've worked here for 13 years. Lol.
Sometimes I can't stand the drama and clicks but whatever I'm here to do a job.
I totally agree with all the ladies here Alyssa, that what was said was rude! People should honestly have a filter by their mouth when they speak!!
I'm an IT admin at JFK. Although I'm new to the position (not the company), I love it. It's so challenging and rewarding - it was exactly what I needed! However, I hate the pressure and some of the people that I work with. Some people are rude, and can try to belittle you in front of a lot of people. It just isn't cool. I guess you just have to take the good with the bad.
I am a medical assistant. I love my job and the people I work with/for. However, I usuaully CANNOT stand patients that come in wih no appointments. Also, I don't love that I don't have a 'set' time that I get off of work. Our hours end at 7, but most of the time we aren't out until 8. I don't love how unpredictable timing is.
I love it too, sometimes I just get worried it isn't going to keep paying the bills forever. We're doing okay saving for a house and the wedding, but FH's salary is way more than what I get paid hourly. I just can't imagine going back to school now or making a career change.
And I seriously do work so hard all week and I feel I don't get paid nearly as much as I should...and I'll be paying off loans for MA school for a loooong time.
love this question!!!
I was a teacher- however, I took a leave of absence to go back to my previous job as a service coordinator for the developmentally disabled...I can honestly say I 100% love love love love my job and all the challenges and daily changes that come with it!!!! It's definitely not for everyone but I LOVE it....the only thing I wish I could change would be if I had just a bit higher salary!!! However, the benefits the company provides us with are beyond words and my coworkers are awesome as is my supervisor!!!!!
