I saw this episode and I was absolutely disturbed. There were way too many girls under 15 pregnant on the stage. Many of the girls were talking about how it's 'normal' for kids to start having sex at 12 in this day and age. It is NOT NORMAL! Obviously these children are seeking love that they are not getting from their homes and they are in need of some obvious help.

To answer your question, I would NOT put my 13 or 14 year old on BC. I understand the standpoint of 'If they are going to do it, I want them to be protected'.. don't get me wrong... I just think by doing it, you are basically saying 'It's ok if you are protected' when it's really not OK.

I know, i ended up changing the channel. Some of the girls purposely try to get pregnant. If youre kid is trying to get pregnant then obviously something is missing in their life, like you said. I dont understand it, i never wanted a kid when i was a teenager. Its funny bc as teenagers they all want to go out and have fun all the time, and date guys and do all these things. But don't they realize that once you have a kid you dont get to do all those things anymore.

That is what im afraid of, i feel that by doing so its basically saying its ok to have sex. Teenagers wouldn't see it as, my parents just want to make sure nothing bad happens. They'll go around saying, well my parents know i have sex, they put me on bc so its ok.

ITA with you.

It's so sad how much times have changed from when we were growing up... I was literally still playing with dolls at the age of 12.. and had no clue what the hell sex was!

i dont know, dont think its changed that much. I remember people having sex, and even in the mid 90's kids growing up faster than they should. I think teen pregnancy was actually higher in the mid 90's than it is now. Infact i read that the teen pregnancy rate has gown done. Although just recently they say theres been a teen pregnancy epidemic again.

Really?? I did also leave a very sheltered life and I have my parents to thank for that! They were VERY involved in my life and at the time I absolutely HATED it, but I'm looking back, I am so glad...

As a Mother I've learned unless you are in the situation you don't truely know what you will do! Each child is different and an approach of teaching them may work for one but I think most kids are of the impression that those things only happen to other people. My fear of only educating them would be will they be honest if they continue their ways anyway? There is no easy answer here.

yeah i definitely remember it, and at school it was always talked about, you always heard gossip about what this one did with that one.

And like i said, teenage pregnancy was alot higher when we were teenagers than it has been the past few years. I forgot exactly how much it has gone down but i remember it has gone down quite alot over the past years.

There is no easy way. And speaking as somebody who did grow up quickly and didnt listen to everything I was told and rebelled. I do see how being strict wont help the situation. My mom wasnt strict and open with me but my dad was INSANELY strict but that didnt stop me from anything, infact i hated it and think i rebelled even more bc of that fact.

And no matter what, i dont think a parent is making the wrong decision but just what they feel is right.

Re: QOTD

Here are some statistics on teenage pregnancy. So as you can see it used to actually be worse than it is now. Seems like maybe with education it does help, bc after there was more education about this and information for teenagers, and also parents were encouraged more to talk to teens, you see the decline. When i was a kid there were debates if this should even be discussed in schools, now that its becoming normal in schools you see what a decline there is. ALso parents were afraid to talk to kids, but with teenage pregnancy at high rates and scare of STD's parents stepped up. Personally i think this is a huge reason for the drop.

The teenage pregnancy rate among those who ever had intercourse declined 28% between
1990 and 2002.
• The teenage birthrate in 2002 was 30% lower than the peak rate of 61.8 births per 1,000
women, reached in 1991.
• Between 1988 and 2000, teenage pregnancy rates declined in every state and in the
District of Columbia.
• By 2002, the teenage abortion rate had dropped by 50% from its peak in 1988.

WOW...12 and 13...that is soo young..they're still babies themselves. At that age I was still so naive about everything. I would hope that I can instill my values into my daughter, but there are soo many pressuers outside of the home that you can't shelter them from.

That being said I think if I did fid out my daughter was sexually active I would get her on birth control and stress to her the use of condoms. I would do that in conjunction with having her speak to teenage moms and see patients who are suffering from HIV and AIDS. Protection is not only against pregnacy but against disease also. It is a little scary to think though what taking BC from 13 until whenever you decide to become preg. might do....maybe I'm just paranoid..but like I said they are still really young girls, with their bodies still developing.

I wouldn't want my daughter to have a child at 13, 16, etc. IMO you miss out on so many oppotunities when you become preg. that young. My friends that have had children when they were teens have told me they don't regret having their child, but regret not having made a better choice for themselves.

This one is a toughy because you never know what you will react like when the time comes.

Of course, I won't know until I am in that situation. BUT what I HOPE will happen is that I hope that I can TALK to my kids and be open and honest with them.

I would not put my child on birth control because i feel like even though I started taking it at 18 it changed my body AND it messed with my head too. I would not want to do that to a growing body!

Of course if she ASKED for it and I said no, that would be like asking for a teen pregnancy so I would have to change my mind then.

I just know that I was always smart about my choices, even when I was young. I was ALWAYS aware of STDs and pregnancy and was careful to protect myself so I hope that my children will do the same. My mother never told me anything and I went on birth control when I turned 18 and could go to teh doctor alone. . .

It will be hard in my house because I want to raise my children in the Catholic faith and I know that premarital sex is against that faith - but I cant be a hypocrite about it either AND DH is REALLY bad with this stuff. If his 12 year old niece says the word BOYFRIEND in front of him he gets SO angry and basically freaks out so I dont think he would be able to help me with this LOL

That is a very good point about being on BC at a young age.

Its hard bc i think now, what would've maybe stopped me from growing up too quickly. And i look back at my friends at that time, and think of those who did grow up too quickly and those who didnt. I try to see what was different for them. Were their parents strict? or did they give them alot of freedom? trying to understand what makes one kid grow up quickly while another doesnt.

Also, i remember seeing something about teenage girls and sports. They said that girls who were into sports were less likely to have sex. They were too busy with practice and after school activities and werent out having sex like the other girls who didnt have all these things going on. And the study showed a different there was. I think it was 75% less changes they will have sex if they are into sports. And after thinking about me being a teenager, i agree with this. I didnt want to do any after school activities, i wanted to hang out and do stupid things. I remember the girls who had practice after school or took dance classes and all those stuff were too busy to do so. So i am DEFINITELY putting my daughter into all these things at a young age, i wouldve regardless. But taking dance, and participating in sports and having other things to do after school rather than just hanging out.

OMG my kids are going to be the WORST!!

BUT

i have to say that i turned out great but really i did - i see people i went to school with that were straight A students (while i cut class and eventually dropped out) while they were going to great colleges i was working and getting the good enough diploma then i went to an adult college at night....you want to know where i see these people working - i see them working in the supermarket and in the mall - so here everyone thought id be a degenerate but i live on my own (well with FH), i pay all my bills, have a good job, im independent - so sometimes i think it pays to grow up fast - i know i did!

After school he had too many activities to just hang around getting into trouble.

this is why i will make sure my kids will be too busy to hang out after school, i remember what i was doing and no way.

Yeah it depends on the situation. Ive seen that happen too, but also see the opposite. I see those who were great kids but then later on when they got to college got into alot of bad things and messed up their lives. But also saw those who did well and always did and still do.

Sports is a great idea. I forgot to mention I was big on sports. I was in gymnastics too so that kept me very busy.

But then again I was also super flat-chested so that also helped me stay a virgin

God..Denise this is hard lol

Im a guidance counselor so I talk with kids everyday and believe me Im still surprised by what I hear....my parents raised me catholic and also I was just plain scared to have sex lol

I would hope my children would be involved with sports, dance etc...at 12,13,14, the reality is its after that I would worry..I dont think any of us would forsee our 7th grade child having sex....

If I did know or my child told me I would educate them, encourage them to wait and ultimatley yes teach them about contraseptives...I wouldnt want my 12 13 14 15 yr old on the pill..their bodys are still growing....
