with the holiday weekend approaching, I keep thinking about my childhood. I guess summer does that to me. Long days playing w my friends, sleep away camp for horsemanship and camping w my parents.
So, I know lots of the brides here want kids and some already have some :)
What was your favorite childhood SUMMER memory?
And is there anything from your childhood that you'd like to give your kids?
I have a lot of fabulous memories as a kid. I'm an only child and my Mom was a teacher so we took 2 weeks every summer to go away camping.
I think my favorite summer memory was when I was about 10 and we went camping in the Shenandoah national park. I was horse crazy and we went horseback riding in the most gorgeous place ever. we camped near a stream and hiked to see waterfalls and saw deer and fox and bears! That place is still my favorite place ever.
I'd love to give my kids my love of animals, science and nature. I was always taking a nature class or science class as a kid. I'd love to enroll them in classes at the zoo or something.

Every summer my family goes camping out in Montauk... a week at the beach since I was 4 or 5! We still go though it's become more relaxed as me and my siblings get older (a lot more reading and just hanging out).
Definitely a summer tradition I want to continue when I have kids!

Hmmm...good question. The thing I remember most about the summers when I was a kid was having all my cousins over and hanging out with them. We were all pretty close in age and we used to go swimming or play man hunt or cops and robbers. We used to have so much fun!!
I remember being very carefree when I was a child and I hope my kids are the same way. I hope daughters like to dance the way I did growing up and I hope my sons play lots of sports like their dad did. I guess I just hope that they are active and don't sit in front of a T.V. all day. Lol.

Swimming in the pool at my grandmother's house ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. lol. They couldn't get me out if they tried
I would like to re-start the tradition of Sunday dinner. Every sunday we all used to go to my grandparent's house for dinner.
I want to start doing this again when we have kids

when i was really little: swimming in my pool with my sister ALL DAY...we used to have so much fun.
when i got older, we started renting a beach house on fire island for a week every summer. those were some of the best times i've ever had. i definitely wish we still did that!
i definitely want to go on vacation with my kids in the summer...i think it makes the time that much more special when you have a trip to look forward to each year.

As a kid we always use to go to Florida and drive there in our custome van with the tv in the back... Oh miss my parents arguing over the map.. My dad telling me if i don't stop kicking his seat he will kick me out on I-95... lol gotta love him...
Going to Sanibel Island for Easter one year and we bbq the turkey- LMAO and it burned..
We rented a condo on the Beach in Myrtle Beach - and just going in the pool and making friends with random people.. Taking home hermit crabs and them smelling bc they died... hahah
Going to the bahamas - the atlantis with my parents when i was about 15. There was a lazy river ride and this cute boy started talking to me and my dad killed that real quick....

What was your favorite childhood SUMMER memory?
Definitely Camping and all the little trips my family took (mostly to somewhere where there was an amusement park - Disney, Busch Gardens, etc). We went on one camping trip and one other kind of trip every single summer and it was always something I looked forward to.
And is there anything from your childhood that you'd like to give your kids?
When we have kids I definitely want to be able to do stuff like this with them. My family still to this day goes on trips (even though I don't go everytime) so it will be nice to continue the tradition with them and our kids.
FH actually went on his first camping trip with my family last year and he had a pretty good time!

I want to be able to take my kids to all the places I went to as a kid. Fire Island, the beach and all.
I was a very active kid- in dance class, camp, girl scouts.. I have to have at least one girl to go shopping with and do her hair!!!
I also want a boy -twins would be awesome a boy and a girl!! BC my FH will be heartbroken if he can't have a son to teach sports to.

Awww cute question!
When I was little my family and I used to go visit my aunt and uncle in NJ in the summer. They had a pool and my cousins and I would swim around singing songs from the little mermaid pretending we were Ariel.
They also lived near a woody area so in the morning, there would be bunnies in their yard and we would wake up early and try to catch them with pool nets Never happened lol.
We'd also walk to this ice cream store and get strawberry milkshakes. mmmmm...so good. Weird what memories stick with you!
When I have my own children, I'd really like to give them the lessons on humility and empathy from my childhood. I know my parents sacrificed everything for my brother and I to succeed and we've both done well. FH and I aren't rich but we are comfortable (after this wedding planning that is! ) and I hope our children never take their position for granted. My family came here from korea when I was 5, lived in a one bedroom apartment, then to a 2 bedroom family house a basement that flooded when it rained, then finally to a house in nice area of Long island. My parents worked their butts off to do this. My kids won't have experienced it but I hope I can teach them somehow...
I kind of worry about that since FH and I moved into a well off area and I hope tour kids can appreciate what they have without comparing themselves to all the spoiled kids in school who have more.

Re: *~*~*QOTD 7/2/10*~*~*
I absolutely miss the summer road trips to our vacation destination of choice. I miss my older brother puking from my little brother opening up his bag of doritos!!!!!!!!! I miss my Dad turning up the music loud, just as my mom fell asleep in the passengers seat. He never had a clue where he was going, so he would freak when she fell asleep. I miss the palm tree game, who ever spotted the first palm tree got $1. One time my little brother consumed an economy size box of cheese and crackers on our trip upstate and he got explosive diarrhea from it!! Oh and the time that a bee flew in the mini van at like 1am in the morning, while my dad was pumping gas. We looked like a bunch of lunatics running around a gas station waving our hands up in the air, talk about making a scene!!!!!!!!
I would love to give my children the same opportunity to travel the world as I did. By no means were my parents rich, but they always were able to give us an amazing summer vacation. My mom always told me that she believes that being able to experience different ways of life, different parts of the world, creates a well rounded person, I couldn't agree more!!!!!!!!!!

Re: *~*~*QOTD 7/2/10*~*~*
It's simple - but just playing outside and hearing my mom yell my name out the front door for dinner. I look at my street and i see nothing - no one outside, the school yard is empty and everyone just keeps to themselves.
When i was a kid the block was packed with kids running around, kids riding their bikes up and down the streets and us playing street hockey in the school yard all day everyday. Where did everyone go???
For my kids - i want them to have those memories and experiences. I want them to play, get dirty, get a couple of bumps and bruises and not feel like their life is only about being plugged in.
I love technology but i really feel like it has ripped some things away from people (ok ill get off my soapbox now lol)

I always remember all the neighborhood kids as well as my sister and I always playing together...We used to wait for it to get dark then play man hunt or ghost in the graveyard!! We had a BLAST! I hope that when we have kids we will be living in a neighborhood just like mine was as a child

i just remember our big summer outing to Jones beach.
there are 10 of us total, so going to the beach with coolers
and fruit and towels and toys was a big under taking.
it was always so exciting to pack up and head to the south
shore ( i grew up in oyster bay)
I hope to give my kid/kids those exciting beach days in the summer

My favorite summer memory was probably when my family and I first started going to myrtle beach, SC. I was probably about 11 or 12. We had such a great time. We try to get down there every summer. My parents own a townhouse and condo down there and my cousins and aunt now live there so we get to go down and spend time together as a big family!

Re: *~*~*QOTD 7/2/10*~*~*
I love this question because I had wonderful summers as a child. My aunts, uncles, and cousins would all travel to our house from California. They'd spend the whole summer with us, and we would also vacation in Williamsburg, VA. We did this for many years, and I continued doing this with my son. We don't go every year anymore since he is a teenager tho. I really miss my aunts and uncles since they are no longer with us. My dad worked his butt off during the year, so summer was time for his family.

Every summer I loved just the feeling of no school! Being with my mom everyday(she didn't work) was so much fun. Unfortunately I can't give the staying home all summer to my children but I do take days off and make sure we do as many fun things as possible and I promise I will take them in the pool pretty much everyday!
