Re: QOTD: 9/4/08

I would move out of NY fast if I could. I hate struggling so much. My family is here, except 1 bro is in NJ but I don't see them often anyway. FH family is here except parents moved to fla a few years ago. I have kids with the ex, so I can't really leave.

We're staying in the LI/Queens area long term. FH's family is out in Suffolk Cty and my family is in Queens. i can't imagine him leaving his family or me leaving mine. It's nice to have a network of people you love and love you around or close by to you. This is espcially helpful for children. We both want them to have close bonds with both of our families. Right now we have planned to stay in Queens and eventually move to lI...but we'll see what happens.

I'm really going to miss Queens and the easy access to the city once I move to LI though

i keep thinking about this lately, i am gonna miss the easy access to the city. I feel like when i move to LI i definitely wont be going to the city often like i used to.

We live in LI now and would LOVE to stay, but we can't afford a house here. We are looking at GA b/c I have family there and both our parents will retire there (or maybe move sooner). I dont want to have kids away from family, but at least we will have my aunts, uncles and cousins in GA until our parents move. The COL is soo much less and you can get so much more house for for $ OOS.

we live in SI and although I swore I would never leave. I know financially we would not do well in NY so we're going to be looking into PA or FL.

Depending on where you are on LI the city could be as little as a half hour trian ride on the LIRR...

Yep - we bought our forever home and we'll be here to stay.

I'd like to move off LI (would love more property) but DH is dead-set against it...

FH and I discuss this often. He loves open spaces and country type living. I love that as well, although I hope my work will be in NYC. So we are torn. He works for NY state, so right now we are not going anywhere. My mom passed, my dad is in NJ, and his parents are thinking of retiring down south, so there is nothing really keeping us here. We both love PA, and may be able to find something there. My only concern is that even though the COL is cheaper, so are the salaries....

yeah i know its not that bad, but just in comparison to now it will be different. Honestly, even moving from one place in queens to another i felt the same way hahahaha. Where i grew up it took 13 mins exactly on the train into the city, and in astoria the 59th street bridge is there so all you had to do was drive over the bridge which was a few mins from my house. Now in forest hills it takes 30 mins to get into the city or during rush hour 40 or more and i sit there thinking how long it takes hahahaha. I do take the LIRR also from queens but it S*CKS being on their schedule, sometimes ill check wanting to leave soon but a train wont come for another hour.

I just feel ill go less, such as now if i want to go buy make up i hop on the train and go to bloomies, which will be pointless if i live in the city. If i need to pick something up quick i would go to the city. to get my hair done i do in the city and i just feel that if im in LI i wont do this often.

As it is I haven't been going into the city very often because I work in LIC now and live in Forest Hills....and on the weekends I'm in LI. I feel like once I move to LI I'll really be disconnected.

I know i'll try to make an effort because I def. love being in the city and I want my children to be exposed to everything the city has to offer and not be afraid of coming in or be so isolated on LI.

Tough question. LIke Espo hubby said he would like to move out of country. which I would do before kids but I want to have my parents around for kids. part. I love LI but the cost is getting ridiculous. We have a house in NC that I am renting out now that hubby wants to move too but I do not. The house is lovely. More than we can have here, but my earngin potential is greater here & I am hesitant about starting from scratch. .. ughh choice

yeah dh would like to do it for a year or so but ill be honest, i dont think he can. I know him and think he'll get homesick hahaha. Once we have kids we have to be around our parents. Plus, although his company has offices all over the world, he has a real good position here so dont think he will leave that now, especially with a new promotion. Too bad, i would've loved to this is why you do these things when you are young and dont have responsibilities yet hahaha

I would NEVER move out of NY. EVER , i love living here . I would be so bored unless i lived in another metropolitan area, and even then , there is no city like NYC . Right now , i am in Queens , but that is a short term plan. I grew up in Nassau county, that's where my family is and where I plan on living. I couldn't be far from my family , and I loved the 40 minute train ride to NYC . We will save for a house, and stay in queens for another 2 years or so

Did you hear about some couple that got married & spent the first year of their marriage traveling the globe. I wish I could, but wonder if I could hack it.

Maybe, but on LI you have hair places and malls all realitively close. Sometimes the LIRR schedule can be annoying, but if it's something you really want to do, you'll get there...

there is a difference, even though LI is definitely not far. I notice that most ppl i know from queens go all over. We go to places in LI ALL the time, sometimes we'll say oh lets go to that restaurant and just go without making plans, i used to go every weekend for a bit to LI. Most ppl i know partied in NJ, and even coming back home same night, drive to the hamptons just to go to a club and come home same day. Go to bklyn and everywhere. But people in other neighborhoods dont like to go far. Not just LI but everywhere else i see this.

I feel like im in the middle and everything is so accessible. By car it takes 10 mins and im in LI, same with the city, going 10-15 mins in opposite direction and im in the city, bklyn is a few mins away on the bqe. I like that

yeah i know, but thats why i mean that i wont be going into the city often anymore which will be weird. I mean since i was a kid i was in the city very often. So would be weird when some time goes by and i havent even stepped foot in the city. Instead of going to the city for these things ill be going to places in LI to do these things.

I hate malls actually hahahaha but i guess ill have to get used to it.

Its not bad bc at night ill probably still drive into queens and the city. Even now i always drive into the city.

Its not bad dont get me wrong but i do think there is a difference. Like i said, i complain now about the commute from forest hills and thats still in queens. I miss my astoria commute ...it just s*cks when you go from 10 mins to 40 mins to commute to the city ya know. People laugh at me now that i complain how long the freaking E train takes to get to the city hahah.

I am with you on this 100%. I think my commute now is long (and I never bother with the E b/c it's too packed, i take the V or R and always get a seat) but it's still better than when i took the LIRR from Merrick or even from Bayside; not having to depend on the LIRR schedule is huge for me (also being able to take a cab home late night is a big plus, I don't do it often b/c i'm cheap but it's nice having the option).

I grew up in NY and my whole family is here. Growing up in Queens we had a small backyard and an attached 3-family house. I was fine with that; I'm not big on a lot of land. my parents moved to LI for better schools and more space, the best part IMO is more space and overall better selection of supermarkets and stores, but I missed queens so I moved back. DH was born and raised in LI, and to my surprise he ended up LOVING queens. Before I bought my place I used to joke about us buying a house in forest hills and he'd be like no, LI is better, more space, better schools, etc blah blah blah. Until he moved in.

the thing I would miss most (besides proximity to the city - but honestly if you work here you'll still be here a lot esp if you both like going out etc.... I was in the city all the time even when i lived at home b/c i worked here and always went out after work) is being able to WALK everywhere and not have to get in the car just to get milk or something. we walk everywhere now, even to metropolitan which isn't super close but a nice like 15-20 minute walk, and I would REALLY miss that if we moved to LI and surprisingly, so would DH.

that said, we are still undecided. the current plan is to stay in my apt for 2-3 years and save enough money for a down payment while still hopefully keeping out my apt and renting it. Then will figure out if we can afford to buy in Queens or LI. most people say it works out the same if you factor in paying city income tax vs. LI property tax, but i'm not sure.

I visited DH's friend's new house in MD and it was SO depressing how much they got for $400k This big, beautiful house with practically an acre of land. But like someone else said, I doubt I would ever leave NY unless I could get everyone to come with me.
