Question.......

Question.......

I guess this question would really be for those of you who are Italian.

Just curious:

If someone used the term 'guido' when referring to an Italian person, would you be offended?

Re: Question.......

It depends on who said it and in what context they said it.

Re: Question.......

I am 100% Italian..

And no, the term 'guido' doesn't offend or bother me at all

Quite the contrary, when I was growing up and as a teenager my friends and I were always labelled 'guidettes' and it hardly bothered me

*shrug*

Re: Question.......

no I wouldn't be offended. I use it all the time. I was a guidette, my brother was the biggest guido - now he's 100% Metrosexual ... all my friends were cuisines
It's apart of life from like 15 years ago, just the way I define how I grew up.

To me it's like saying 'I was a metalhead', 'She's was a guidette', 'he's a gangsta', all types of cliques when you are growing up.

Re: Question.......

probably not - I think it's not as serious of a term as other racial slurs....IMO, it's more 'laughable', if that makes any sense?

Re: Question.......

well, in this case, a stranger making a general statement about there being too many 'guidos' in a particular area.

Hmm.... well that is probably this person just saying he thought their were too many Italians in this area... which I'm GUESSING might have been meant in a derogatory way..

So in this case, I supposed it *might* be considered offensive.. but its hard for me to judge, I think

Not at all. When I hear that term (which I havent in a LONG time) it brings back good memories of styles and music.

I know what MrsERod is reffering to and I dont think she meant it badly, but maybe the loud music coming out of cars and stuff.

Re: Question.......

I am Italian-American and don't find it offensive because I think it describes an attitude and a style like other high school cliques like jock, prep, burnout, whatever.

I don't think it isolates only Italians, as I can clearly remember other ethnicities trying the guido look and attitude.

The person was asking if there were still too many guido's crusing DPA, which to me is like asking about all the guidos cruising Franie Lew. If the person hasn't been around in a number of years, I don't think it was offensive to ask. She wasn't saying there are too many Guinni's living on her block, you know? Now THAT would be offensive to me!

that's how I took it...in a derogatory way..(I wasn't offended b/c I'm not Italian) ..I just thought someone else might be offended by hearing this term.

Re: Question.......

I'm glad i'm getting everyone's opinions on whether being offended by this term, b/c I honestly didn't know if Italians DO get offended by it. I guess if any term is used in a derogatory manner, then being offended by it would be a given. But I guess in this case, that's not what the person meant.

Given Lisa's description of the situation, I again agree - the guido comment still wouldn't offend me (but guinni's definitely WOULD) Guido is used more in terms of an attitude and TYPE of person rather than their nationality, at least IMO. As someone else said, when I was growing up their were plenty of NON-Italians who embraced the whole 'guido/guidette' style/attitude and it wasn't really directed at the Italian community excluisvely

NOW that pissed me off...only because she judged me based on my name and because I have natural curly hair....

Re: Question.......

I am not Italian, but I do think it was mentioned in a derogatory way. Especially, if the person was not italian.
