Question for Catholic Brides-UPDATED-WE MADE A DECISION!

Original post by MsKitty1274

Are you having a full mass or just the ceremony?

And why did you make that choice?

FH and I were raised Catholic, though we did not receive our sacraments (I was baptised when I was a baby, he wasn't) until we were older.

I have been trying to decide whether or not to have a full mass, as it is one of the sacraments.

FH is leaning towards just a ceremony b/c it'll be quicker. I am leaning towards the full mass b/c it is a sacrament, and it won't be THAT much longer.

We do not go to chuch as often as we'd both like (and should), but my schedule has recently permitted me more time to attend church and really look forward to getting more involved with the church.

Opinions please! Thanks!

We're having a full mass. It's important to our families, plus we are both products of catholic school and his friend is actually a priest who will be performing the ceremony.

We had a full mass, in all honesty a full mass adds only 15-20 mins to the ceremony. If your gonna get married in the church, why not go all the way

I agree, in all honesty, I never thought NOT to have a full mass!

Same here. To me, the ceremony just seems incomplete.

We are having a full mass. As catholics, we both agree that, there was no other option for us. Our thoughts being that the sacrament of marriage is the reason for the party afterward. This isn't right for everyone, go with what you are comfortable with.

Will you look back and say 'I wish I had a full mass and experienced the sacrament of marriage' or 'I wish we were able to spend more time with our guests who traveled to see us'. It's a matter of opinion.

I was told at pre cana that the only difference is that the mass has communion - is that right?

We're having the ceremony. We're both Catholics who always wanted to get married in a church, but dont agree with the politics of the Catholic church. . . and we're having a lot of non-Catholics at the ceremony and personally, I didnt want communion where a good portion of those in attendance can't receive.

Yes. We got married on Sunday. So, basically, it was just understood that we were doing a full mass. (especially because so many people missed mass to come to our wedding)

We made our decision last night. We'll be having a full mass. The only hesitation we had was the length. After reviewing our timeline, it shouldn't be a problem!!

Thank you all for your thoughts!

We're not doing the mass. Honestly, I've been to way too many Catholic mass weddings and they were just too long. I'm fine with just having the ceremony at the Church.

From my understanding, the sacrament of Marriage doesn't require a mass. So I'm all set!

I wanted a full mass, always thought it would be that way. We changed it to a ceremony since FI is not Catholic (he is Lutheran) and him and his family can't receive communion then. It seems awkward to me then. I didn't want to receive and not have him receive.

Same thing here.

I thought so too-even though you don't do a full ceremony- it still means you had received the sacrament of marriage. My priest said so as well.

Yes. We were both raised Catholic, and made all our Sacraments in the same church, so it will be special for us to make our marriage sacrament in that same church together.

I have been to 3 weddings in the past month, all full masses, and it really isnt that much longer...

We both have had our Baptism, Communion, Confession and Confirmation. FMIL is very religious so for her we are having a full mass.

Won't you and your FI need to make your sacraments before marrying in the church? I was told that we both had to have been baptized and confirmed. That's something you should check out since you still have time to get it done if it's needed.

To answer your question - We had a ceremony, our church does not do a full mass on Sundays.
Good luck!

I really wanted to do a full mass, but we recently decided together to have the ceremony only for basically the same reason. We don't want to have the first thing we do after the church joins us as a family (i.e. communion) be something he can't participate in. We also have a lot of family that wouldn't be recieving either.

Re: Question for Catholic Brides-UPDATED-WE MADE A DECISION!

We had a full Mass and had to fight to get it. Because we only have one Priest in our Parish and so many people get married there that are not members of it, he is overloaded and doesn't normally do full Mass weddings on Saturdays or Sundays. My mother had to persuade him to do it.

I couldn't imagine not having had one. I wanted the ceremony part to be longer, because to me that was the most important part of the day. It was still less than an hour and was absolutely beautiful.

We're not having a full mass because some of our guests are not catholic and I remember going to other services and sitting there for an hour without any idea about whats going on. Although my FI go to CHurch every Sunday and do have a relatively strong faith, for us, we looked at our guests and wondered what would be appropriate for them.

No we did not have a mass. DH moans and groans and complains when we have to go to a mass for other people so he really didn't want people to feel that way about coming to his wedding. Plus he figured its his day too and he didnt want to sit still that long!!!

Also we know our 2 year old son was NOT going to be able to sit still that long without crying/running around/screaming

We have received our sacraments...just later in life than 'usual'. I was in high school, he did it right after Sept 11, 2001.
