What stops me is my family and friends. I ahve seem many people lose loved ones, and I would never want my family to have to go thru that.

I think if there is an afterlife and it is so much better, why doesn't eveyone elses just kill themselves to get to it.

There is something I learned in one of my political theory classes in college. I am reaching way back so bear with me. It is called Someone's Bet or Gamble or something. According the the theory, everyone should bet on the fact that there is a God and an afterlife, because it is the safest bet. If you are right, you go to heaven. If you are wrong, it doesn't matter, because there is nothing and you don't know it.

I am not telling anyone to bet on God. It just popped into my head and I though it might interest someone.

And if anyone knows the name of the guy whose bet or gamble it is, please tell me, because now it is driving me nuts.

This is an issue that is very confusing for me. This is why I originally created an “afterlife” thread yesterday. I was not raised to believe in god, or an afterlife, or anything of the like. And believing that I was just going to die never really bothered me until very recently. I just got it into my head that it’s such a scary idea to not exist anymore, with the exception of what remains you leave behind when you are gone. I have read before that the human psyche cannot comprehend that it will cease to exist. And if this is true, it might explain why I’ve been in a total freakout about it.

In no way am I suggesting that I want to end my life. It’s the total opposite; I want to be here for as long as possible! But what has been crossing my mind, and I posted about this yesterday, is what is my significance? If no one will remember me in 100 years, and I will not have a spirit remaining, what is my purpose for being here to begin with? I am having a hard time accepting the idea of an afterlife, because it goes against everything I was brought up to believe. But at the same time, I am having just as much difficulty accepting the idea of my life being so temporary.

I don’t know what to think. I hope I don’t sound like a psycho with all of this. I am just very confused…

Many people enjoy life right here on Earth, and get something out of the present. They have loved ones, pets, causes, love of humanity and the Earth, whatever. Maybe they just like the taste of grilled cheese and seeing pretty sunsets - reason enough for them to want to live, no?

Unfortunately, now that we all know there are so many religions to believe in, his wager doesn't work in a multi-religious setting b/c if you wager on one god you ultimately have backed out on the others...

No you shouldn't peewee, I was making a point, in regards to the statement that i should since I don't beleive in the afterlife. If my statemtn is ugly, then so is butterfly20's. WHy si that you find fault with the atheist who doesn't believe. If you turn the statmetn around like I did, people have a problem, but the first one ther isn't. Give me a break!!



I figure that i am a good moral person, so if I am wrong about the afterlife, I am sure I will go to where the good people go, since I know that I am a good person.

How am I self centered??? Youn want to beleive what you want to beleive and I ahve no problem with that. You are the one commenting on other's beliefs. You think eveyone should be like you, and love god, and wnat ot go to heaven, that is self centered.

I queston things because i ws a given a mind, and that is what i do, are you making a comment against me for that, pardon me that i don't just take what people tell me as fact and cow tow done to to the masses.

I am not depressed because i am an atheist, I am quite happy, i don't have to be guilted into doing things becasue i won't one day get into heaven. Or wait is it I can do what I want and then just say a few hail mary's?? I am confused, I alwasy forget what the rule is, since religion is full of hyprocricy.

No, Michelle, it is not that.

I understand your anger, but please don't go there. You are not just insulting peeweesgirl when you say that, and I don't think the rest of us deserved it.

I think the original posted question was rather unclear...
And everyone just took it as an excuse to have a heated debate. (ie. insult fest)
