I would just say Black tie - don't give them the option =)

Re: QUESTION: where are you including 'BLACK TIE or BLACK TIE PREFERRED?'
my invites are already made up and there is frankly no room for anything else..
would it be bad to have a card made up that says
'Black Tie Preferred' ?

Re: QUESTION: where are you including 'BLACK TIE or BLACK TIE PREFERRED?'
Is your preferrence to have everyone in tuxes or is it ok for guests to wear suits? That's your call to make and thus word accordingly.
As far as making up a card to say only the proper attire, I think I would feel a bit weird about receiving a card like that.
If you choose to do the card route, you may also want to include a few other things, such as perhaps any specialized menu, music, directions and hotel reservation instructions. Then it won't look weird to have the attire mentioned.

I would put it on the reception card. I saw samples last week when ordering my invites, and it was on the reception card.

Re: QUESTION: where are you including 'BLACK TIE or BLACK TIE PREFERRED?'
Ok, so it sounds like you want to say 'black tie preferred'?
This may sound silly, but what about using a pretty font and printing a small clear label stating 'black tie preferred' and using that label as a 'Seal' for your envelopes? The person opening the envelope will read it and should in theory keep that in mind, without creating extra clutter with the invite.

Re: QUESTION: where are you including 'BLACK TIE or BLACK TIE PREFERRED?'
Outer envelope?
Or what about creating a little tag, holepunching it and then attaching the tag to the invite?

Re: QUESTION: where are you including 'BLACK TIE or BLACK TIE PREFERRED?'
do you think I should lace it through the ribbon that closes the invite?
or should I just have the darn thing on the invite panel> would thatbe best? truthfully?

Re: QUESTION: where are you including 'BLACK TIE or BLACK TIE PREFERRED?'
either 'BLACK TIE PREFERRED' or even more formal and probably a bit more proper
'BLACK TIE ATTIRE PREFERRED'

Re: QUESTION: where are you including 'BLACK TIE or BLACK TIE PREFERRED?'
WAIT!! I just realized that I can't do it on the invite b/c it only gives the ceremony info (i'm having it at 2 dif places) so people would read it and be like what? black tie at the church? lol

Re: QUESTION: where are you including 'BLACK TIE or BLACK TIE PREFERRED?'
Do you have a reception card made up? If not, I would have that printed, I think ours cost $120, not that expensive. They match your invites, and you can have the black tie optional on there. We are doing ours through word of mouth. FHs family is not from NYC, so we did not want them to be underdressed. I wanted to put 'jacket and tie preferred' on the reception card, but was outvoted by FMIL and FH. So I am hoping I dont notice if someone comes in a Hawaiian shirt or something

Cella, I am not sure about lacing, you may have to print a few of them with different sizes/holes in different places and try a some variations.
