So i have my final hall meeting last night, and we were going over everything, and we get to the topic of the place cards. So i tell him how im making the votive place cards to which he tells me 'oh well, you can do them, but we cant light them' *** is the point of putting all my effort into making them if they cant be light. I called them up months ago to make sure i would be able to use them and they said of course no problem, apparently leaving out the fact that they wont let me light them. So now i have to come up with an entirely new idea for my placecards and i have all these darn votives at home that i cant use......if anyone needs them, let me know, ill give em to ya for cheap.

WHAT?!?!? Theres no way I'd let that fly. Youre paying them an ARM & LEG for 6 hours. tell them they HAVE to light the flippin things!

did you ask them the reason for doing this? maybe they dont have enough time to do that... can you offer to have a friend light them? maybe they'll let you do it if you take full responsibility to set them up....that seems a bit ridiculous

Yah, that is just strange!! I know most halls won't allow 'open' flame, but aslong as they are in a votive, everything is OK..........

they WONT light them, because my guests have to pick them up before cocktail hour. i asked if they could just have everyone pick them up on their way downstairs to the room, but he said no. He didnt say it was a fire hazard, just more of a guest saftey sorta thing.

Can they set up a table inside or just outside your room and have them placed there? You can get one person you trust to run up just as CH is over to light them and that would minimize the time the candles are lit. Do you think that's a possibility? I'd hate to see your idea go to waste.

They have enough time, and if they didnt, my DOC could take care of it. But they are refusing to let me light them, because like i said, they dont want people burning themselves.

I asked him that, if they could set them up on a table downstairs outside of the room, but 300 people looking to find their name in not such a huge area would cause like a traffic jam. I have no idea what im going to think of now

That is insane - they should have told you up front that they wouldn't let you light them. I would call and ask to speak to someone else - tell them you spent the time and money on them already, and it's unaccpetable that you were given inaccurate information. You asked if you could use them and they said yes.

thats nuts, I would call them right back up and ask to speak to the manager, explain what is going on and what it is you want, see what he states, if its a fire code, then i can understand, but voltv. candles are fine and allowed at almost all the places I have heard of except for the church.....

I remember when we were looking at halls they said it was dangerous to have the place cards lit candles since people would have to carry them from the table by the door to their table and that created a fire hazard. So maybe your hall has the same issue. You can still have them just not lit, then leave lighters on the table so people can light their own!

MAybe you can have them lit on the table and get a map place card, I forget what they're called but I've seen them somewhere they llok like poster sized scrolls.
