Thanks Chipp - I was happy to rad it was such a successful experience for you!! Some say kids raised like that end up with no religion. I am not so concerned about religion as I am raising them with a belief in God.

You can raise a kid one way but there is no telling what they will do, what path they will follow!!

rlivings: I was raised catholic, did all my sacraments and celebrate all the catholic holidays. I also go to temple with my dad and celebrate all the jewish holidays with him. its great around christmas time to have a christmas tree and a manorah in my parents home.

I learned so much about each religion. We're getting married in church, but I am having my dad do a special blessing in hebrew at the reception. I cant wait to tie both religions into my day.

edited to add: i dont really have a strict belief in god, but I believe it was great to learn about both religions and traditions.

That sounds really nice Chipp. I t is nice to incorporate both in your ceremony. We did and the guests loved it.

Our plan is to raise children with understanding of both faiths but NO CEREMONIES...i.e. no sacraments, no bar-mitzvahs etc.

I have mixed emotions on that but ........... that's another story

Edited : If I could raise my children Jewish, with knowledge of Catholicism, tree, Easter etc., that would make me really happy. We'll see what the future brings!!

My dad's cousin married a catholic man. They taught the kids about both religions and then felt when they were old enough to decide let them decide on what they wanted to follow.

I told FI when we have kids they'll be raised catholic but they will also celebrate the jewish holidays and learn about that religion as well.

Did you do programs for your ceremony? I am because I know my jewish family will come to church but have no clue whats going on so I am definatly doing a program for them I just dont know how to do a template for it.

Yes Chipp...... I did programs. My ceremony was heavy on the Jewish so I did it mostly for the Irish side. It had the order of the ceremony and a description of things like the Chuppah, KEtubah, unity candle, breakign the glass and the Claddagh (we had it on our unity candle). then I did a listo f the wedding party and ended with a poen that my 92 year old grandma wrote.

I had a million extra programs. A word of advice...don't print too many!! What a waste!!

According to FH, even though you were raised Catholic, if someone asks you what religion you are, you should say Christian, not Catholic. Catholicism is not a religion; it's a denomination of Christianity.

I still say I'm Catholic though when people ask what religion I am. It's too vague to say you're Christian. That's like someone asking you 'where are you from?' and you say 'America'.

Raised Methodist but fought it all the way. Now I am non-religious. DH was raised Catholic but doesn't consider himself religious anymore. I guess we're both athiests.
(however, I took the test and i got 100% unitarian universalists????)
