If you are not getting married on a holiday weekend or having a destination wedding, how important is it to send out STD's? Up until a few years ago, this wasn't the thing to do. It almost seems like a silly waste of money unless you really need people to make arrangments for that date. I am thinking I could put that money towards something more useful.
That do you all think?

I agree. I'm not sending out std's bc that money could be put to better use in our opinion. It's not around vacation time so I really don't see the need. I've already gotten a 'oh i never received your save the date' already! It's nice to have, but if you're on a slight budget, i think you can do without it

We did send out STDs bc i found really cute ones I liked. But after we did it I was like hmmm now everyone knows to save it and then we wont get as many no responses as we anticipate, so it may be a problem. My FH has alot of distant family out of state we are inviting but he is guaranteeing pretty much that they wont come so that is what we are basing our budget on. But they do have time to make arrangements now that we sent the STD. Something silly to think about.

I'm not a fan... I'm getting married on T-Giving weekend and skipped those. I figured, people either are going to come, or they are not.... Sending a 'STD' doesnt mean someone will actually change their plans to accomodate my wedding. Sure we lost a few folks due to the holiday, but surprisingly few. I feel they're a lot of work and too much money for VERY little payoff...
I also know that unless i'm SUPERCLOSE to the couple, I basically take the STD information, put it on my calendar if I plan to attend, then *poof* off it goes to the garbage. i have too many tchotchkes on my refrigerator already.
Sad, but true.

I'm not sending out STD. Most people either received an email or a phone call from me or my mom. They have to mark it on their calender.

I just sent an evite and when I sent the evite, I asked people to give me their addresses...So I can knock two things out at once.

I didn't do them, I had a really short engagement. But I've never received one STD yet and I honestly do think ur $ can be out to better use.

we sent it out but we are not getting married in NYC so it was kind of a necessity.
Had we gotten married locally, we would not have done it.

We didn't do it. They were really cute, but I would rather use the money elsewhere. If it's important enough to the guests, they will make an effort to come.

All of FH's family and a lot of our friends are OOT. Also, a lot of our friends are in school or have new jobs, so we want them to have time to save up for a plane ticket (and have more time to hunt for cheap airfare).
People seemed to really like the STDs (we did magnets) and they were really cheap, so I think it was a good decision. Plus, now we have about 40 on our fridge and it's fun to look at!

i love putting them on my fridge! im a magnet whore
i think they are cute - half of our families and friends dont even know when we are getting married so it gets the word out - only our immediate family knows the actual date that we picked.

I've been thinking about the same thing. My wedding will be the weekend before Thanksgiving (2008), so I'm thinking of sending STD cards only to out-of-state guests, just so they can make arrangements early on.
We had an engagement party just for family, and in the Thank You cards for that, I included the line, 'We look forward to seeing you at our wedding (November 16, 2008)', so I guess that counts as a STD for them.
If it is just for out-of-town guests, I may just print them out myself on heavy-stock paper to save money. Similarly, if you create a webpage, you can send everyone a STD email directing them to the webpage for more info.

I did not send a save the date, I figure everyone who you want to be there will kno when your date is by word of mouth. Plus, alot of times people send them out and wish they didn't b/c they do not want to invite that person anymore. I think you can save the money and do without.

We did them and they came out adorable!! That being said- no one paid any attenion to the hotel info we supplied which was the main reason that we sent them in the first place and some got screwed and had to stay at a different hotel. Not my fault- we did what we could! So if you think there might not be enough rooms at the hotels near your RH then I would say send em- if that's not an issue then save your $$!

I didn't do STD's...it actually worked out better for us because in the end(because of our large list) we NEEDED people to say no! lol. but seriously - i dont think it's entirely neccesary unless u have a lot of OOT guests, or are around a holiday. good luck!

We only did the std for oot of town guests. We had many people coming from Ireland so they needed to plan accordingly. We didn't send std to people that lived around here except the bp. I thought it was a cute momento.

If you're getting married during a peak wedding season I would do it. I'm getting married in January when nobody has anything to do, but I wanted them anyway. I spent about $100 for $150 STD magnets. Which was really inexpensive. FM me for more info.

It would have cost me over $200 for them, I decided I wanted a personalized aisle runner. Since I couldn't justify spending the money on the aisle runner, I cut STD from my budget and added the runner. Everyone knows my date anyway and I will just send the invitations early.
