Requesting WAY TOO MUCH INFO (enter at your own risk)

Original post by rojerono

I am suddenly fascinated by this topic BECAUSE... a colleague of mine (in her 30s) just confessed to me that she cannot figure out how to use tampons. I honestly and sincerely believed that every woman over the age of 18 used them. It never occurred to me that people might not know HOW.

So... do you? Use them? If not... is it because they are uncomfortable or because you can't figure out how they work or is it because of health concerns? I am really pretty curious. And I am sick and unable to do much of anything so I have a lot of weird thoughts on my mind these days.

I use tampons all the time unless it is the last couple of days then a panty liner.
I learned 'how to' use a tampon right before my trip to cancun when I was 18 and haven't turned back since!

i haven't used a pad since i was 15.
i feel like i'm wearing a diaper.

i plug all day and all night. love it.
as the flow gets lighter, i use a lighter tampon!

I was a little reluctant to respond but I am an Instead Cup user. I will never use another tampon. I get all the benefits with none of the health risk. but beware its not for the squeemish . but you can go up to 12 hours without needing a change

ETA: forgot to say Instead Cups are disposable.

Tampons all the way!!! I used to use only pads, then discovered tampons and haven't looked back since! But at night when I sleep I wear pads instead and also if it's very heavy bleeding I'll use both.

Same here!!!!!!!

I used tampons up to the age of 29, then had a hysterectomy (health problems). So I am TAMPON FREE!!!!!!

I use the plug when its very heavy [ALONG WITH a pad of course] but as soon as it lightens up I use just a pad... Im paranoid and know 1 too many girls to get TSS...

Tampons just don't do it. I'd be changing them every hour. Not into the TSS risk.

I refused since I was 16 to stick foreign matter into my body, so tampons never entered it Nor did the male species. But to answer your question, I never had a heavy period, and just used lite pads. Now I just need a panty liner for some occasional spotting since being on the Depo shot

Only tampons for me!! I will double up with pads at night on those heavy days only.

I totally agree. I cannot do pads......although I constantly wonder if I will have problems down the line because of the corkage.

Instead cups look like a diaphram without getting into too much detail its a catcher not an absorber. guess I'm alone here but I have found them to be the most comfy and never have to worry bout bathroom breaks at work.

I have a funny story regarding this topic...

After our senrior year of high school, a bunch of us went to Cancun for a week. During that week both me and my best friend Liz had our period. I used tampons, she did not. I talked her into at least trying it, as it would make her vacation much more pleasant. So, she did.

We were waiting in the lobby for a bus to come pick us up for a jetskiing thing and we were all standing there talking when all of the sudden she fainted!!!

She woke up right away, and the hotel had a car take us (and some girl who had a weird rash on her leg--who I had to sit next to...) to some remote medical center 45 minutes away. The doctor said that the tampon must have been hitting a certain nerve that caused her to faint...and that she'd be fine. SHe did bump her head quite hard though, and spent the rest of the day in bed.

A few years later she met a guy at a frat party and they started talking about how they both went to Cancun that year and stayed in the same hotel. She mentioned that she fainted in the lobby and his reaction was 'No way!! You're the girl who fell from the balcony?!?!'

The rumor was that she fell from the 3rd floor balcony into the lobby...

She has since started to successfully use tampons!

In high school I had a friend also that was afraid to use one. So we coaxed her into tryin it one day at the beach. It took detailed instructions thru the bathroom stall door but she finally got it. Later that night I had to spend an hour explaining to her mom that the tampon did not take her daughters virginity. so the ongoing joke from then on was she lost her viginity to her friends tampon. not as good as the balcony story but we still laugh about it 11 years later.

I use both. I find tampons to be uncomfortable if the flow is too light towards the end.

I REMEMBER BEING A COUNSELOR AT A SLEEP AWAY CAMP. IT WAS AMAZING HOW MANY PARENTS DROP THEIR 10 -12 YR OLDS OFF NEVER EXPLAINING ABOUT HAVING A PERIOD. THEN LOW AND BEHOLD IT HAPPENS AT CAMP. THE KIDS WERE SO FUNNY WHEN ONE OR TWO WOULD EXPLAIN WHERE EXACTLY A TAMPON WOULD GO.
