Riviera in Massapequa
Thanks to everyone for all of their reponses. I'm sure that where one person has a good experience another person can have a bad one. I spoke to one of my neighbors you recently had their wedding at the Riviera and they were extremely pleased and highly reccomended it. I also didn't have the problem with the food tasting. After I posted my question, they offered to set up an appointment to sample the cocktail hour food in their office while another wedding was going on. My fiance and I have decided to book it and we're very comfortable with our decision. I have a good feeling that our experience will be a great one. Good Luck to everyone else!!

Stacey - I don''t think you will be disappointed. We are having our wedding there in December and we are very excited. We have been to the Riviera for weddings before and we have had a great time. Also we went to a tasting in October and we went back for seconds! Good luck with the rest of your planning.

Riviera - Read your contract CAREFULLY
After all the advice everyone gave you I am surprised that you would book your wedding there, but to each their own. I hope you read your contract carefully. Things happen and circumstances change. Right now you are sailing on the wings of newly engaged bliss but reality will set in and I hope you have made an intelligent choice. I wish someone had advised me before I went through everything I have with the Riviera. According to NY State law Catering halls in nassau county are not governed by the department of consumer affairs like NYC. NYC provides quite a bit of protection to consumers in case of unscrupulous merchants and has an entire subsection on what catering halls can and can`t do to consumers. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/html/wedding.html However, because the Riviera is located in Nassau county, you will be subject to the contract you sign even if it is extreme and causes you hardship. Think about it. Look for me on Fox 5 problem solvers!!!!

Pease don''t let others make you feel bad about your choice. This site is the only place I have heard anything bad about the Riviera - and just on this thread. I am getting married at the Riviera in June and had a similar situation as Kerryl. I booked my Saturday night wedding a 1 1/2 years in advance. Several months ago I needed to change the date because I found out that the US Open Golf Tournament was that weekend (June 15, 2002). It wouldn''''''''t have been a problem for me except that I currently live out town and have over 70 people coming to LI from out of town who will be needing hotel rooms. When I found out that there were NO hotel rooms to be had that weekend, I called the Riviera and they were more than accomodating - giving me a list of all the available dates and even held 2 dates for me so that I could arrange my other vendors. I guess my point is that you can find bad stories about any place. I was very upset when I read Kerryl''''''''s post. You never like to hear anything bad about the vendors that you are using. I have been stressing for several days over this, but was glad to see that you chose the Riviera. They were recommended to me by a friend whose son got married there. I have spoken to many people since I booked them who have said that the food was good and the service was fine. And I do hope that they pay Kerryl back her money. The contract does say that they will return the deposit if they re-book the date.

I didn't want to post, because I've never actually been to the Riviera, but I wanted you to know that I know 2 people who were married there - one a few years back and one last year - and they were more than happy...just something else to make you feel a little better! Good luck!

Riviera in Mass. - I lost thousands
Hey that shouldn`t stress you out. If you are truly a bride searching for a great catering hall I hope you appreciate the advice and think twice. I WISH someone would have warned me BEFORE I booked. Now I am out THOUSANDS of dollars and stressed because of it. Like I said after I cancelled people came out and told me about their bad experiences there. Just because the Riviera is holding thousands of my dollars and refuses to give them back....they claim they have not rebooked the date (a saturday evening in a very desirable month) but when my friends call to ask about availability they do not offer the date. Perhaps they will be having a wedding that will be paid in cash....hmmm. Perhaps they will offer to drop the sales tax if they pay cash....that is illegal. I personally would chose another place if you haven`t booked yet. I you have booked your bed is made and I hope your situation is very much different then mine. I sincerely wish you the best of luck. They didn`t offer me any dates that were reasonable. They told me I had to move my wedding up a few months earlier- they had another cancellation date available. We all know is impossible to speed up plans a few months when you order a couture dress at least six months in advance of a wedding. Maybe their policy now is for food tasting but it never has been before. Maybe all this dialogue will improve their service especially their customer service. Until I get my money back I will continue to consider them to be a business I would not recommed to my worst enemy.

Kerryl - Just Curious...
Have you ever confronted Riviera with the fact that when your friends call to check on your cancelled date, they don`t offer it as available, but yet they continue to tell you they have not booked the date? If you`ve caught them in a flat-out lie, you should definitely bring it to their attention that you are aware of their dishonesty over the date being booked and are therefore entitled to your thousands of dollars back, since the date has been booked, as it is unbelievable that they would tell a 'potential customer' a date is booked if it really isn`t.

Riviera - Read your contract CAREFULLY
Of course, anyone who should read every contract he/she signs very carefully. Did you do that? If not, shame on you and you have to suffer the consequences. From your posts, it appears that YOU are the party who attempted to change the terms of the contract. Under these circumstances, you have technically caused a breach. It appears, from the information you have provided that the vendor, who was under no contractual obligation to change any terms, offered you alternative dates in an attempt to accomodate you. You stated that YOU did not find these dates acceptable, and then wanted the non-breaching party to refund your money. Under New York contract law, you are not entitled to a refund, unless there are provisions to that effect in the contract. If the contract calls for reimbursement once a date is rebooked (and possibly only after the event has been fully paid in order to avoid another default in performance, as you did) then, you should begin legal action, but realize that you were the one to originally breach the contract.
