Sad: today at work,

Original post by june262004

One of my coworkers was ringing up a customer (yeah I work in a supermarket) the person started screaming at her for double scanning her donuts and the cashier had a seziure. She feel and hit her head on the register counter. I feel so bad. They had to take her out in an ambulance. This is why people shouldnt be so nasty.

Maybe PEOPLE SHOULDNT BE RUDE YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT PROBLEMS SOMEONE HAS.

I agree...There's never an excuse to be rude...But on the same token, you don't know what that lady was going through either...You don't know if the guilt she is experiencing for what happened is consuming her so badly that she is home attempting suicide at this very moment...

um -- i think we can eliminate the 'soap opera' scenario

Epilipesy is something totally different from an allergy.

Obviously.

But allergies, like Epilepsy have triggers.

and other people in the store learned a lesson

my philosophy is that everyone is put on earth for a reason, even if it's to be a bad example for someone else

OK honestly there are no Flashing lights on a scanner. This isnt a video game from Japan. I was just stating how bad I felt for the poor girl. Maybe PEOPLE SHOULDNT BE RUDE YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT PROBLEMS SOMEONE HAS. The lady couldnt have said You scanned my donuts 2 nicely? She screamed it so loud that everyone turned around.

Ok calm down... as I said earlier, I think the customer should be ashamed of herself. Her behavior was inexcusable. I do hope your co-worker recovers quickly. Epilepsy is a very serious condition indeed. And as such, certain precautions should be taken - possibly your co-worker re-evaluating her job.

In a perfect world, we would all be nice to one another and certainly more understanding of one another's mistakes and not yell at one another, etc. But this is not a perfect world, not at all. Thus we need to watch out for ourselves.

BRAVO. Well said. This woman did not cause this girls epilepsy. Yes, maybe it triggered it but she did not cause it. You cannot control how nice or how mean people are to each other.

That was all I was trying to say. Thank you Jan for putting it a bit more eloquently than this bored-on-a-Friday-afternoon-Peanut was able to.

Re: Sad: today at work,

How can stress cause seizures?
Stress can affect brain function in the following ways:

* Stress can trigger an increase in the breathing rate, known as hyperventilation. Doctors use hyperventilation to provoke seizures in certain patients, especially those with absence seizures.
* Stress may cause you to miss your medication, leading to an increase in seizures.
* Stress can cause hormonal changes such as an increase in the steroid hormone cortisol, which also may influence seizure activity.
* Negative emotions related to stress, such as worry or fright, may cause seizures. This may happen because the limbic system, the portion of the brain that regulates emotion, is one of the most common places for seizures to begin.

from the epilepsy.com website.

i agree that the woman customer did not cause the cashiers epilepsy, but i would hope that she learned a valuable lesson how her actions can affect other people. as for the cashier, i hope she is okay. but i would agree that the cashier needs to find a way to manage stress levels, seeing as how that was a trigger for her seizure.

GEEZ

How did this thread spin so out of control?

Bottom line: no need to be rude to the cashier ringing up the donuts. Simple mistake. The customer needs a reality check and probably some therapy lol and the poor cashier had a seizure at an inconvenient time (public place). I feel bad for her and hope she is ok.

Being an Epileptic myself (who thankfully has had no seizures in three years) I will tell you that STRESS is a definate cause of seizures along with some other factors! I use to have 8-12 seizures a month.

I hope the girl is ok!
