I don't know. One of my good friends is going to have a commitment ceremony ( I think she called it something else, though)

Although, by NJ law, a man and woman do NOT even have to be in LOVE to get 'married'. Marriage is a legal commitment, but there is no reference to 'love' in NJ law. go figure!

i'm for it. regarding suven's post...i'm confused about that. don't take this personally b/c i'm not directing it towards you at all, i'm just confused. the law in nj says youdo'nt have to be 'in love' to get married? i didn't know it was a law anywhere. basically, what i am saying is that there are heterosexual couples who don't marry for love everywhere. anyway, i'm just trying to make sense of that law. either way, i'm for it.

Definitely for it, I think that it is ridiculous that the president wants to amend the constitution to make a marriage between a man and woman only. FI and I went to his brother's marriage in Toronto in April. It was so sad that they had to leave the country to legally declare their love for one another. They have been in a committed relationship for over 13 years.

Just out of curiousity, would somebody that's against it please be brave and explain why? I promise not to bash!

sorry. I didn't phrase it as well as I could have. Basically, my thought is that if a man and woman don't even have to be in love to get married, why place any other restrictions on marriage, such as gender? I cited NJ because I don't know what the other state specifics are on marriage.

for it.

i was raised by two people who are opposed (especially if there are adopted children involved)- they are right wing fundamentalist christians.

the argument i constantly have with them is 'how can you be opposed to two people who LOVE each other (they would not be together if they didn't) raising a child as opposed to a ridiculous percentage of parents in this world who abuse and hate and resent their children and their spouses!'

They think it is an 'unhealthy' example for children to have an 'unbalanced' set of parents.

If I was a lesbian, I would raise my child with my wife and there would be plentry of male role models in his life.

\I'm drunk. I don'y know if that made sense.

Bunnymonkey you make total sense.

Why is there so much hostility toward gay people? Some people just have to have someone to hate/put down/etc.

I am for it! One of my best friends is in a serious relationship with another woman They deserve it!

For the people who were wondering; Here are some arguments against same-sex marriage:
-Religious reasons
-The point of marriage is to produce children. gay marriage is not natural biologically.
-sanctity of marriage
-negative effects on children
-collapse of health care system
-social security collapse
-Slippery slope (gay marriage will lead to all sorts of other crazy things being legalized like incest, polygamy, etc.)

***I do not agree with any of these arguments and can argue against each and every one of them***

For it. I look at it this way..I am in love and so excited to be getting married. Why should ANYONE be denied that happiness? I don't think it defies the 'sanctity of marriage' or goes against what marriage is about.

Look at how many marriages between a man and woman have ended due to numerous circumstances...or how many people jump into marriage without thinking of what its about

(brittany spears for an example, lol..). It is OK for her to go through and immediately end...but not for a same sex couple in love?

I was just talking about this topic with FH b/c we just started precana...and although its been nice in ways, i can't believe how against this subject as well as so many other things are viewed as sins in the eyes of the church. It really upset me...but thats another topic!!

Re: Same Sex Marriage

What it all comes down to for me is that they are TWO CONSENTING ADULTS...
IMO have them be able to marry is a whole lot better than these 'comitment ceremonies'. Although for most this is their only option right now, i think it is so confusing to them and the people around them. It isn't a marriage..there is no real legal bind...

AND i HATE when people use the ..LOVE IS LOVE argument...imo that hurts their cause rather than help it...

Re: Same Sex Marriage

I know a few people who are against it and their reasons are religion and the health care system. I don't know how that would change... but whatever...

I also knew a girl who was very christian... and a lesbian. She would go to church all the time and the members of the group she belonged to were trying to 'save' her. She hated herself for it... I haven't seen her since my freshman year after i left the youth group... but i truely hope she's been able to find peace one way or the other...
