Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?

Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?

So How do you feel?

Im curious how 'we' here feel about it in general. Seeing as we are all getting married or are married. Admittedly our views are a bit skewed to the 'happily ever after'.

Then again, not everyone can have the same cookie cutter view of this but it's difficult to express that in a post without fear of being battered over it. So I created what I hope is a broad based poll.

If you view, please choose. Even if it's 'other'.

I voted that I was against it to begin with, as it was not in line with the Catholic Church.

I have no problem with gays and have several gay friends. Living together is fine, but I don't think they should be allowed to marry. The sacrament of marriage is very sacred in the Catholic Church, so it's a huge knock against it to allow same sex couple to enjoy a sacrament meant for a man and a woman.

Gay couples should have the same rights we do to custody, taxes, benefits, property, inhertinace rights. As my gay friend told me, he doesn't care what they call it- call it marriage, call it domestic partnership, call it whatever you want, just give them the same rights.

ETA: nevermind.

I agree 100%. Not for nothing, I think it kind of makes my matrimony sacrament a bit less because anyone can just do it. Call me selfish, wrong, whatever! My really honest opinion. I am also a very strong Catholic and that may be it as well. I was always taught that it was wrong and now I am old enough to know otherwise, but I just don't see it as OK.
And, I know gay men and I love them to death, I just can't grasp one of them getting married legally.

I agree 100%..

It's just when we start talking about laws of the land and stuff not associated with the Church.. then I feel like 'is it fair for a gay couple who have been togther for 20 years to not have the same protection under the law as a heterosexual couple'? Of course, they should if they have been committed.

Things should always be fair.. but yet I admit, it just does not quite right to me. I think I will always see marriage as an act between a man and a woman. Civil unions are OK.

I guess I'm on both sides of the issue.

OK- now I'll respond. This is not a Catholic country. Catholic rules have no right to interfere with the state rules. This is America- separation of church and state. If Catholic rule was the law of the land say goodbye to birth control, abortion, pre marital sex, etc..

I understand your opinions, but religious views should not interfere with lawmaking.

whew! I've seen some other posts on here before and everyone seemed to be for the gay marriage -- I thought I was gonna get killed, but had to say how I felt

Glad I am not alone. And OctGroom, to your point about having the same benefits as everyone else, in most companies, medical insurance will cover you, a spouse, or 'a domestic partner'. So, it's not like they're not getting ANYTHING.

you are absolutely correct, but the catholics shouldn't have to support a law that goes against their beliefs

Sorry I should explain that poll option:
The option of 'I was against it to begin with, it goes against the church' is really a combo or multi option. Either
A) you were against it because it was not following church beliefs and you've been against it this whole time

B) you've just been against it for any many reasons

C) you're against it just because the church says so and you have been since the start for this reason only.

For those who posted against. BRAVO. In the day and age that we should be free to say ANYTHING we believe, be it against the president or against the MTA it doesnt matter, we have that right. Lately though I find that those who opposed this have been beaten up for just stating their beliefs. That is just so unAmerican.

I too have gay friends (Queen, trans, gay, lesbian and bi) That does NOT justify me to tell you a darned thing about their feelings or their opinions. I can only give you what *I* feel. I wouldnt dare drag them in as 'well I can say this because I know a gay person'. My opinions are my own without need for justification, they are my own and *that* is the only justification they need.

That being said. I voted that I just don't know. This is all too new. Essentially I feel this just isn't right. It's so PC.

Not to say they don't deserve the same rights as a domestic partner. Even Jim had those rights if we lived together for more than a year. But my company also recongizes same-sex partners. Not all companies do. THAT would have been a fight I could have backed up. Force corporate America to recongize same-sex partners as domestic partners. Make it a legal thing, not a religious/legal thing. That just seems off to me.

Im not Catholic. I am proudly Agnostic. Still I find my faith tested with this. Is this God's will. Procreation and the grown of the human race. I will weakly agree I believe in this.

This doesnt mean I think less of them. Just means I disagree. Which is my American right to do so.

Oh and I'll also go out on a limb and say this.. this country was founded in the beliefs of God. We allow freedom to practice any religion you want, but still we were grounded in the belief of God. This country is still a majority Christian (Catholic or otherwise). It's just the simple truth.

I am absolutely for gay marriage. Here's the thing I don't think of two men or two women as being any different then a man and a women. It seems completely normal to me (which probably makes me abnormal) But also this hits very close to home for me. My dad is gay and been with his partner for 10 yrs this month. I think they may be planning to go to MA to be married. I am actually proud that he finally was able to come out (although my mom was hurt in the process) and live his life the way he wants. Why shouldn't these people have all the same rights as us? They are not hurting anyone and when it comes down to it what business is it of ours.

Also although I was raised in a catholic Italian family I have strayed from my religious upbringing for reasons such as these. I can't feel comfortable in a church that will deal out judgements on 2 people who love each other because they are of the same sex. The catholic church needs to look inside it's own walls and deal with it's own problems before it passes judgement. I also agree with the post that said this country and each state should not and can not be ruled according to the church.

I was just wondering if you abstain from pre-marital sex and will abstain from using birth control (now or when you are married), since neither of them are in line with the Catholic Church?

My response: Im not sure, too new, need to get used to it

I am all about fairness... or atleast I try to be. I believe that gay people should be able to get married. What I don't agree with is marriage in church/temple. I know it sounds hypocrytical, but that is how I feel. This is too new for me and probably people from my generation... not all but I would guess most. I think my kids kids will have more of an open minded outlook on gay marriage. I like to think that I do, but in all honestly, I really don't because I am against gay marriage in church.

That's how I feel.

I was talking to a gay friend a few weeks ago who's partner lives in another country& can only come here on & off as a tourist, but if they were straight & married he would be able to stay here.
I think that's what really put me definitally on the 'for' side, which I was leaning towards anyway.

But then, why should non-catholics have to abide by laws that go against their beliefs? Aren't we all just humans living on this earth entitled to the same rights?

I can totally respect that. Churchs & temples can make there own rulse. keep in mind there are some very lax churches, but I think it is perfectly fair to make it legally ok, and then ok in some chucrhes & not ok in others.

But as far as I know, domestic partners don't have all the same rights. I haven't looked into this in detail, but one that comes to mind is the one I stated above about being married to someone from another country.
