Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?
Original post by Xelindrya
So How do you feel?
Im curious how 'we' here feel about it in general. Seeing as we are all getting married or are married. Admittedly our views are a bit skewed to the 'happily ever after'.
Then again, not everyone can have the same cookie cutter view of this but it's difficult to express that in a post without fear of being battered over it. So I created what I hope is a broad based poll.
If you view, please choose. Even if it's 'other'.

Re: Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?
In closing on my part...none of us is perfect.
I have a big problem with my faith telling me that a wedding ceremony will make me ready for sex, I have a big problem with the fact that I have to confess my sins to another sinner (a priest) and a few other things in my faith. But, hey what are we gonna do?
Let's not start arguing girls....we were doing so good.
Our opinions were asked of and we expressed them. If we can't handle other people criticizing them then we really need to not post about them. I don't mean this to anyone in particular I promise. I am just stating it for future reference. There are plenty of times when I don't post because I just don't wanna deal with the opposing view. It's ok to not post.

Re: Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?
I was going to stay out of this...BUT I think those of you that are against this should re-read things you wrote like ' I was taught'...that means someone took their beliefs and told you to believe them, not that you sought out the truth..
I once believed Lincoln freed the slaves because I was TAUGHT it, wasn't the truth at all!!.....
When you say the sacrement of marriage being special between a MAN and a WOMAN?
Who said this? Who personally told you this? The Bible?
The bible was written a long, long time ago when language was just beginning to be fully formed and used, and there were no gay men or woman openly exhibiting themselves as such so there would be no reason to NOT say it the way it is written...but to not say it does not mean that it is NOT okay....
....IT WOULD BE THE SAME AS when the colonists came to America...EVERYTHING that was written was in terms of freedom from Britain and about the british colonists....What if those words'BRITISH' were used and things like freedom were NOT available to hispanics, asians etc in todays world because they werent part of the original colony's?
Would people then just excuse the entore things and say its ok, it was written before they were here...SURE they would!
...So thats what I say about the bible...the bible teaches love...love first and foremost and it does not matter whom that love is for, man or woman, we are all the SAME under God...anyone who disagrees cannot say they love their fellow man ( if you dont offer them the freedom to love themselves) and therefore cannot discuss the bible since they are not fully aware of the truth of love...
a little deep I know, I just get heated when people cannot back up their beliefs...
I do not mean to offend anyone....

i vote choice 1 - i think its great and it's about time
i think in our sociity, we were raised incorrectly and hopefully, this can be fixed to includedsuch issues or topics that you may approve or disapprove. people should not be limited who they can be with.
My thoughts exactly.

I feel as though maybe I am being called out for what I wrote regarding God telling me something (which is fine, please take all my words as friendly debates/comments. I am not heated up nor am I flaming) I don't believe in organized religion and I don't believe in the bible. I think the bible can be compared to the brothers Grim. If someone came up to me today and told me that God told them to stand on a mountain and write 10 'guidelines' on a rock, I think I would have them committed. I guess all I am trying to say is that I don't (won't) read the bible so I can't read between the lines and Adam and Eve means nothing to me.
in closing, thanks to all for your opinions -- I may not agree with them, but I respect them
For those of you who have gone astray from organized religion -- I am sorry that happened, but I will pray for you anyway. God forgives everyone, even the non-believers in his teachings.

life as we know it is based upon the unity of men and women...if that starts to break down, everything breaks down...
(that aside, i do have another thought...)
what's to stop two hetero-sexual 'friends' of the same sex from joining in a legal union in order to obtain certain financial rights or health benefits or whatever...
or would that be an abuse to allowing same sex marriages, in the same way that marrying for money or citizenship or whatever else is an abuse of a legal union between a man and a woman?
just throwing out some ideas for discussion.

I was wondering that too. But you're right - a man and a woman who are just 'friends' could abuse the system the same way...

Just wanted to add that as devout a Catholic as I am (and what that specifically means to me is noone's business and not up for debate) I am not against gay marriage just because the church says it's wrong.
I don't equate the two (as X did in her poll option)

Re: Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?
I have some pretty strong religious beliefs and I am Catholic. However, I understand the importance of separation of church and state and therefore I do not accept 'because God says so, or implies it, or certainly meant to say it but didn't' as an acceptable legal argument.
Personally, I would like to see gay couples treated equally. I don't necessarily think they should be married in a Catholic Church, but a civil ceremony is very different. Lots of people who can not get married in a Catholic Church can be married by the state. I also don't think that gay people will be able to manipulate the institution of marriage any differently than heterosexuals do. Heterosexual people marry for money, health benefits, green cards and a whole host of other reasons.
The government can't ever force the church to marry gay people any more than it can force it to marry divorced people. I think the laws as applied are discriminatory and I am glad that MA has taken this step.

Somewhere on page two I said this:
Sorry I should explain that poll option: The option of 'I was against it to begin with, it goes against the church' is really a combo or multi option. Either A) you were against it because it was not following church beliefs and you've been against it this whole time
B) you've just been against it for any many reasons
C) you're against it just because the church says so and you have been since the start for this reason only.
I can't change the poll once it's up. I actually do NOT believe that all Catholics are automatically against gay unions. It was just an easy way to word it.. I meant no offense.. nor did I mention a church by name either.
Just thought I'd clear that up

I am truly, utterly, bitterly disturbed by some of the responses that I've seen. Yes, yes, it's a democracy, everyone is entitled to their opinion, etc etc etc. Now that that garbage is out of the way, are you guys SERIOUS??? For exactly what reason does it bother you that gay and lesbian couples can marry? This truly is no different from taking away certain rights from blacks or hispanics because they're 'different' and it 'just doesn't feel right.' I truly believed that our generation was so different from the one before us and I was proud of that. This is really bothersome, I cannot fathom why you would take it upon yourself to judge someone else's relationship and try to deny them the same thing you have. And hiding behind that religious excuse...no offense but there ain't no one here that's ever met that man upstairs and had a 'heart to heart' on what He believes is right or wrong as far as gay marriage goes. So it's not in the bible - the birth control half of you are taking isn't in there either. Neither is electricity or Women's rights but I'm fairly certain none of you would say those 'just don't feel right.' Grrrr, the Catholic Church just KILLS me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (And, before you all start on that, I was raised Catholic and went to a Catholic college, where I learned all about the 'virtues' they try to instill in everyone around them...i.e. truth with a capital T.)
Please really consider your opinions - you are saying that people who happen to be gay or lesbian are beneath you!!!

BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!!!
I agree 100%%%%%%%....I am absolutely shocked that so many NEW YORKERS!!!!!! the most liberal and democratic state are actually opposed to uniting people in marriage that are homosexual couples
Love is Love A union with you dog for all I care...who are we to judge what someone else does behind closed doors.... what about the Catholic priests or 1,0000's of cheating spouses...etc...

I am in support of gay marriages. I believe that homosexual people are entitled to as much happiness as any of the rest of us. Marrying my FH will bring me so much joy---why shouldn't a gay person be able to enjoy that same privilege?
And I would rather see two caring, kind homosexuals be married then two nasty, worthless straight individuals any day! (ETS---I mean I look at people for more of WHO they are then WHAT they are).

I don't mind gay/lesbian marriages...But that is where it stops for me. I am always nervous when changing some law...that it opens the door for other things to become legal...My personal grip.
BUT ....I cannot stand when people say Love is Love (it is a personal pet peeve of mine with this topic). Love maybe Love but that doesn't necessarily mean it is right and using 'a union with your dog as an example, not only demeans the whole gay/;lesbian movement it lumps them in with SICK PEOPLE.
By all means...i understand and have no resistence to gay/lesbian marriages...But using love is love...opens the door to a lot of 'love' that i don't consider to be appropriate, normal or should be legal.... And I WILL judge what goes on behind closed door..Blanket staements like this only hurt the cause not help it
And always associating Catholicism with being against this issue...well that is silly...MOST religions forbid any kind of gay/lesbian union legal ot not! So to point fingers at catholics just because they have the balls to say it is ignorant!

Re: Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?
Im not Catholic.. heck Im Agnostic... God has very little to with my opinion of this. Love is love..sure and divorce is higher than it's ever been, that has nothing to do with my opinion either.
It is just that, My opinion. For all that some may dislike us sharing those opinions because they may differ from yours, it's *is* very much our right to say, print them.
I think same-sex partners should get the same legal rights and hetro domestic partners. Whats so wrong with that? How does that mean they are 'beneath me'?
Is it so wrong of me to share my opinion that I'd rather this issue come to the vote of the American people as a whole instead of the whims of some local state judge? I say lets vote on it.
How's that for democracy?
This wasnt meant to offend anyway.. it was meant for people to share their views. The minority here feels not 100% behind it. What harm is there in that?

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!
M biggest issue is when people 'judge' and then use religion as their crutch....Isin't judging someone and not loving them fully as a child of God a bigger sin?
Makes me wonder about the people who dont eat meat on Fridays in Lent yet judge or think lower of another human and then believe they are 'pure'....sorry to sound so mean, I dont mean to put down ANYONE, includng those who feel differently and strongly about their beliefs, but sometimes it's scary that people dont REALLY hear what they are saying and why they feel the way they do...

Re: Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?
I haven't read all the posts so I'm not sure if someone else made the same point I'm about to make.
Here's my take. I am 100% for gay marriage. I'm not saying that churchs or temples have to approve of it. But the state should. If your religious and your against homosexuality because of your religious beliefs I can respect that. Religion is a belief and if you don't have your beliefs then what's the point of religion.
But here's a question that I have. For those that question the sanctity of marriage if homosexuals are allowed to marry, how do you feel about people that only know each other for a day and get married. Doesn't that bring doubts about marriage? What about people who get drunk in Vegas and marry someone they don't even know? Or people who only marry someone for money? To me this makes a mockery of marriage. I would much rather 2 men or 2 women who are deeply in love with each be allowed to marry then a guy and some drunk hooker in Vegas getting married and then getting divorced 2 months later. Hollywood has made marriage another movie. These people get married and divorced like it's nothing and to me that's disgraceful.
I don't care what they do in the bedroom and that's really the only difference between homosexual and heterosexual couples. We have no problem in this country with heterosexual couples who get married and become swingers but yet we're going to question 2 women and their ability to love each other? Personally, I don't get it.
