Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?

Original post by Xelindrya

So How do you feel?

Im curious how 'we' here feel about it in general. Seeing as we are all getting married or are married. Admittedly our views are a bit skewed to the 'happily ever after'.

Then again, not everyone can have the same cookie cutter view of this but it's difficult to express that in a post without fear of being battered over it. So I created what I hope is a broad based poll.

If you view, please choose. Even if it's 'other'.

I don't know what New York state law constitutes, but it is legal in the state of Maine to marry your first cousin. (I know, big ewwww.) I'm not very versed in the Bible or Catholic religion but I'm assuming this is outlawed by the church, am I wrong? If for whatever god-forsaken reason someone is that attracted to a flesh and blood relative, go for it. Why not? It's not my life.
So, why is it not legal in this state to marry someone of the same sex? Someone who doesn't share your DNA? If there were a vote tomorrow regarding the marriage of relatives, I would not vote against it. As disgusting as I think it is, it is in no way directly affecting me. How can anyone say a gay marriage is affecting them?
Honestly, I'm not a religious person by any means. I'm not having a religious wedding ceremony and the term 'God' is never heard in this house unless it's used as an exclamation. As far as I'm concerned, marriage is a commitment which is made legal. It gives us rights that unmarried people do not have. Why can't a man marry another man? A woman to another woman?
IT's the 21st century! WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?!?!?!?!
My best friend is gay...he has been with his boyfriend for 5 years now. They want more than anything to be recognized as a married couple. But since everyone else seems to want to have a say in their life, it looks like it's not going to happen soon....and that makes me sad!

Ok sorry but i have to disagree with this...I think a state that allows first cousins to get married and not gay/lesbian couples...well somethin funky is going on?
Personally it was my understanding that a child that may result from a marriage of first cousins could have some serious birth defects...
So even though it is not my life or my decision to 'love' my first cousin...It wasn't the baby's decision to be born with disablilities either...

You're absolutely right, Jenn! I didn't even take that circumstance into account! The point I was trying to make was to each is his/her own...
The law does state that people who marry blood relatives must seek genetic counseling.

Still Donna..how does a state justify allowing this kind of marraige and not a gay one?
CRAZY...because this is the reason i stop a gay marriages...i don't think the door should be open to one and all crazy people who want to marry cousins, more than one wife, children..and DOGS!

I have to defend my position and wonder why so many of you are so interested in what other people do????
Whya the hell do you care??? Is it your problem when they meet their maker? Do you have to live with them or be in their lives?????
And yes I defend my position..LOVE IS LOVE and I'm not hiding behind any screens or false claims.
You can find love in the strangest places and if it makes someone else happy again why do YOU CARE????

I have to wonder if people that are opposed to same sex marriages also don't like homosexuality. Or are people ok with homosexuality- meaning that whatever goes on in your own bedroom is ok and it's just the marriage part that's bothering them.

I have to add my two cents here... I think it is truly sad that we still, in the most democratic and progressive country in the world, treat an entire class of persons as we treated slaves, black and women... these are PEOPLE we are talking about... PEOPLE who have feelings... who want to share their life with someone LEGALLY... who want to commit what they feel is the greatest honor... can you place yourselves in their shoes and imagine if someone told YOU that because you and your FH were 'weird' or 'different' or made people uncomfortable that you would be forbidden from marrying? For gods sake, as long as they aren't physically hurting anyone, let them live their lives as you live yours... let them enjoy the same rights and benefits as everyone in this country... there is absolutely no excuse for treating a class of people this way in this day and age!

Re: Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?

Here's my take on it. I have always been for same sex marriages. I believe that love is precious and good and with so much hatred and suffering in the world banning two people from loving each other is totally wrong.

I do however have a unique prospective since FH brother is gay so I am now even more pro same sex marriage. FH brother and his partner have been together for over 14 years. They share everything in life and are two of the nicest people you will ever meet.

As straight people we have the option to express that love in front of our family and friends and join in the celebration of marriage. Unfortunately, for them to freely express their love in a formal marriage ceremony they had to leave this country for a week and go to Canada. FH and I went to the wedding and it was absolutely beautiful. I think it would have changed anyone's mind who was on the fence with this issue. The entire ceremony centered around love and mutal respect and brought tears to my eyes.

WOW! I am soooooooooo outnumbered here

Still, I'm entitled to my opinion, just like you guys are entitled to yours and I say it's wrong. I do agree that we should separate church and state and maybe I was wrong for using the Church in my argument. But, deep down, I don't feel it's right. And don't give me that 'love is love' crap. If we all felt that way, you'd have people marrying their pets (I think someone else said this).

And before I'm called a hypocrite, I also have a thing against one night stands, swingers and all that other stuff that you guys said we turned a blind eye to.

By the way, I was talking with my FIL about this last night and he SWEARS there is a passge denouncing homosexuality in the Bible. Now, I know, a bunch of don't care what the Bible says, but supposedly, it's out there.

I'd be really interested in reading it if you could let me know the verse, etc.

Thanks.

Besides my religious beliefs, I just don't think it is right and it is certainly not right to allow them to raise children. There are qualities that are passed to a child that only a man has, and only a woman has. Same sex marriages confuse the child and lead to teasing and bullying by peers because they;re not like everyone else. Why would you want to subject a child to such psychological damage.

I have big issues with this. First of all, anyone who went through elementry school knows taht bullying adn teasing happens to almost everyoen. I was the tallest kid in class (including the boys) and I wore glasses- definitely got a lot of teasing. Does that mean I should have gone without my glasses and slouched down so I didn't get teased?? Your argument goes against any type of individualism. Second- if everyone who was bullied and teased had psychological damage, then no one would be normal- You can't use taht as a justification against gay parenting. What about kids in one parent families where a parent dies or abandons the family. That is also 'diffent' - should that be outlawed too?

i used to work in foster care law- and you can't believe the things that STRAIGHT couples do THEIR OWN flesh and blood from sexual abuse, physical abuse, to flat out MURDER. I think its better for two people of the same sex to love and care for a child, then to have no one care about these children at all. And that is the reality. Many of the children adopted by gay couples are unwanted.

BTW, to date, all the serial killers out there are products of straight families. Talk about psychological damage.

Civilization as we know it is not going to crumble because gay couples in Massachusetts can marry. Nor will it happen when/if the other 49 states approve it. Gay couples can have children - whether through adoption, IVF, or some other means - and there is no conclusive evidence that children of gay parents themselves 'turn out' gay or have gender or sexual identity issues.

There is also no conclusive evidence to suggest that children with same-sex parents suffer any more psychological damage than those of us born to male and female parents. To date, it appears that these children can and do have perfectly normal childhoods.

There is also no solid evidence that proves that children benefit from the traditional mom and dad parental environment. In fact, studies have shown that the sex of the parents is not what influences the child's success (behaviorally speaking) in life - it's the two-parent unit itself.
