Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?

Original post by Xelindrya

So How do you feel?

Im curious how 'we' here feel about it in general. Seeing as we are all getting married or are married. Admittedly our views are a bit skewed to the 'happily ever after'.

Then again, not everyone can have the same cookie cutter view of this but it's difficult to express that in a post without fear of being battered over it. So I created what I hope is a broad based poll.

If you view, please choose. Even if it's 'other'.

I don't even know where to begin.

First, to all those that are religious and against gay marriage. Marriage is not something that the church has a monopoly on anymore. My marriage has nothing to do with religion. It has to do with my FH and I wanting to be recognized legally as husband and wife. I don't really need or care for God's approval as long as I have the government's recognition.

Second, as far as homosexuals ability to raise children. Why not!!! Just because they are gay does not mean that they are not human. I have a friend whose parents were gay and I can assure you she had the same sort of childhood as most people raised by straight couples. Anyway, homosexuals already legally adopt children all across this country. Why not allow them to marry so that they have the same legal parental rights that straight parents are given.

Third, I have heard the 'well, if we allow gays to get married where will it stop' arguement on here before. Yes, there is a possibility that it might lead to something else. Just like what happened when Rosa Parks sat in the front of the bus, or the sufferage movement, or the abolishment of slavery. Change is not always a bad thing. Yes, it is scary but I for one am ready to take that chance. I am ready to live in a country that does not just have the words 'ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL' written in their constitution, but lives by those words.

I have big issues with this. First of all, anyone who went through elementry school knows taht bullying adn teasing happens to almost everyoen. I was the tallest kid in class (including the boys) and I wore glasses- definitely got a lot of teasing. Does that mean I should have gone without my glasses and slouched down so I didn't get teased?? Your argument goes against any type of individualism. Second- if everyone who was bullied and teased had psychological damage, then no one would be normal- You can't use taht as a justification against gay parenting. What about kids in one parent families where a parent dies or abandons the family. That is also 'diffent' - should that be outlawed too?

i used to work in foster care law- and you can't believe the things that STRAIGHT couples do THEIR OWN flesh and blood from sexual abuse, physical abuse, to flat out MURDER. I think its better for two people of the same sex to love and care for a child, then to have no one care about these children at all. And that is the reality. Many of the children adopted by gay couples are unwanted.

BTW, to date, all the serial killers out there are products of straight families. Talk about psychological damage.

I think that all kids get teased in school but dont you think there is a big difference from being called 'four eyes' or 'giant' than to someone saying 'hey, does your dad wear a dress around the house' or 'who plays the mom in your house'

Were not saying that gay parents dont love their kids but when put in the outside world this is the crap that they have to deal with. Its sad but it true and why should any kid have to defend their parents.

I am a firm believer that children learn teasing and bullying behavior at home.. they just don't invent it on their own.

We wouldn't have to worry about teasing if parents raised their kids right- whether from traditional or non-traditional homes.

the teasing excuse doesn't fly with me.

I totally agree, it seems nowadays parents let there kids say whatever they want and dont care. Sadly, kids today can be very cruel.

So how do you feel about interracial marriage? Those kids get made fun of for their parents as well - are you against that?

No I am not against that, but as I said kids can be cruel and they shouldnt be subject to things like this but unfortunately they are.

Then I'm very confused with your argument. If your basis is that the children of gay parents would be made fun of because of their parents so they shouldn't be allowed to have children, why are you not against interracial marriage? Likely because you realize that there's no reason to be, just like ultimately there's no reason to be against gay/lesbian marriage.

I guess we still have a few years more than I thought before people begin to shrug off this ridiculous stigma of gay and lesbian couples.

Come on now, where are the people that sided with me yesterday, I'm getting creamed here

This is my last post on the subject, because we can go on and on about this and nothing will be solved. I am going to agree to disagree with all of you. Case closed

You feel your way, I'll feel mine, but I will say this. I would be very surprised to see this law passed in NY. NY is one of the biggest political hubs in the world and there'll be too much political and social opposition to this. Boston may be the first, but I don't think we'll be seeing too many states following suit.

Of course, stranger things have happened.

People used to say that about letting blacks vote in southern states...

You can't change the world.
Who cares if some people on a web-site don't agree with you?
I'm sure there are things that you believe or don't believe in that could arguably be called 'ridiculous' by others. Don't let it all get to you.

Ok, first of all where did I say that I am against gay parents having children? All I said was that these kids shouldnt have to defend their parents because of kids that pick on them, but this is the world we live in.

If a gay parent can provide a good home than a parent who will beat, abuse or kill a child I dont see anything wrong with that

I don't think that there is anything wrong with people of differents views having a debate. People should do it more often. It can often open up your eyes to a view piont that you otherwise might never have discovered. Yes, they can get heated. That's okay as long as you do it in an intelligent and respectful manner.

And I am glad that our ancestors did not abide by the 'You can't change the world attitude.' Who knows where we would be and under what conditions.

I know that I can't do it single-handedly but I also can't not try. I really feel like this is a cycle that we've seen time and time again - find a group that's different and hold them down because you're not comfortable with the change (by this I mean the general 'You'). I do care if people on some website don't agree - not with me but with what I see as a fundamental human right. Honestly, I just do not see this as any different from what was done to blacks and hispanics and Jews, etc and it was all for the same reason - they're 'different'. And plenty of people 'didn't let it get' to them at that time either. Imagine what we might have been able to avoid if they had.

I'm of the mindset that if it's put in your face you'll at least have to think about things and make your own decision, which I think many people on here have not previously been forced to do.

Re: Same Sex Marriage is Mass.. how do you feel about it?

I'm currently reading a book for school about the Scopes trial - the trial over whether or not teaching evolution in the public school system should be legal or not, and have done a lot of studying on religious and political issues. What I've discovered is that the arguments from the conservative/traditional side are always the same...

Teaching evolution will lead to the destruction of society; interracial marriage will lead to the destruction of society; removing prayer from public classrooms will deliver our children into hell.

The way I see it, the only thing that changes after gay marriage becomes legal everywhere are the family rights those individuals have over each other. Because think about it - gay people are ALREADY gay (and gay people have been around since the dawn of time - it wouldn't have found its way into the bible if they weren't), they already live gay lifestyles, have gay communities, they already can adopt children, or give birth to them in the case of lesbians...heck they already have a flag of their own!

I don't think gay marriage will destroy society, I think intollerance will. JMHO.

I personally can't see how these comparisons of how people were treated in the past keep coming up to how gays are 'treated' now...

True, while they're may be gay-bashing and several isolated incidences of intolerance nowaday--one can't possibly equate not allowing homosexuals to get marry each other to the holocaust or slavery...Or whatever it is anyone is trying to make reference to.

Nor is it appropriate to relate this to the question of interracial marriages...It's NOT THE SAME THING.

How is this not the same thing? With interracial marriages two people are/were denied the right to marry because of a characteristic one of them possessed (being a minority). With gay marriages, two people are being denied the right to marry because they are BOTH minorities (in the sense that if you are a homosexual, you are a minority).

I don't understand how it is different.

I disagree.

Gays were murdered in the holocaust, right alongside jews...

And there are an enormous number of incidents of gay bashing..they don't all make the front page of the news if people don't yell loudly enough..

And as far as I can see, the only issue against interracial marriage is that it wasn't in the bible (as far as I know, but I don't study the bible to know for sure) but it was on the lawbooks, and it still was faced with the same arguments that gay marriage is faced with.
