I personally can't see how these comparisons of how people were treated in the past keep coming up to how gays are 'treated' now...

True, while they're may be gay-bashing and several isolated incidences of intolerance nowaday--one can't possibly equate not allowing homosexuals to get marry each other to the holocaust or slavery...Or whatever it is anyone is trying to make reference to.

Nor is it appropriate to relate this to the question of interracial marriages...It's NOT THE SAME THING.

Well, as someone who works in a predominately gay bar. I can tell you that intolerance is not as isolated as you (and many others) think. I have personally witnessed several occasions of people calling my co-workers Fa##ots. I witnessed a gay bashing in the middle of 8th Avenue. Just because it does not make the headlines of the news does not mean that it does not exist.


As far as the comparisons not being the same. Oppression is oppression!!! It is all linked!!! It might manifest itself in different manners, but it is still discrimination.

I didn't say the discrimination aspect is different. I agree discrimination is discrimination.

You can compare gays not allowed to get married to say: blacks not being allowed to ride in the front of the bus or women not being allowed to vote...But burning people in concentration camps, or selling humans for slavery is hardly the same thing as not allowing gays to marry each other. That is all I meant.

Why not? One of the rules of slavery is that the slaves could not marry. It was a way of enforcing the principle that they were property and not of their own free will to chose a mate and marry them.

As for the holocaust, Gays were also persecuted in the holocaust and died in the gas chambers alongside the Jews, and Catholics BTW. Haven't you seen the pink triangle on the uniforms.

Riding in the back of the bus- another way to separate blacks from the white society.

So how is this different from not allowing gays to marry? Lets recap:
1. Denial of marriage rights was a principle held by slave owners to show that they were property and didn't have autonomy.

2. Gays died in the holocaust.

3. Forbidding gay marriage is separating them from 'the proper society' just like requiring blacks to ride in the back of the bus, separting them from 'the proper society'.

So please explain it to me again, because I just don't get it.

It's not the same thing for one very important reason. Unlike the other 2 cases (holocaust and slavery) which had no rights whatsoever, with the gay thing, most gay couples can enjoy many of the same benefits that straight couples can i.e. domestic partners being added to insurance. That's why it's not the same, it's not like they're not entitled to anything.

They can share apartments, hold jobs, alot of things. Slavery and the holocaust forbid everything, no rights, no freedom.

The argument that it's the same because 'gays died in the holocaust' is absurd.

Of course...Humans are humans are humans...I have respect for all life...I certainly don't think people should be harmed or harassed for their beliefs or their way of life or anything, really...I have a tremendous amount of empathy for people who are in bad situations...

I agree. The holocaust and banning gay marriage are not even close to the same thing.

you totally misunderstood me -- because gays have never had to endure drinking out of a separate water fountain or stitting on the back of the bus, THAT is why it's not the same thing.

Gays are equal in society from what I see. And what's the big deal about marriage. Like I said, you can apply and receive medical benefits under 'domestic partner'. What's the big deal in having a piece of paper that says it's recognized by the govt. Are they really getting that much extra out of this? Most states already make provisions and allowances for same sex partners

The argument that gays have the same rights through domestic partnership is absurd. Not all states have domestic partnership laws. How would you feel if someone told you that you can not get married, but we will allow you to register for a domestic partnership. It is not the same thing. The protections are not the same as married couples receive. Health insurance. Just because they are registered does not automatically mean that their company has to recognize it the same as a marriage. I suppose because it is NOT the same. Yes, they hold jobs. They also sometimes lose them because of their sexual orientation. Do you really think that its okay because 'It's not like they're not entitled to anything'? What if the civil rights movement was halted because of that attitude? What about women's suffrage? In those cases we had something, but was it really equal or just?


I think that the point is that each of the above atrociously stemmed from the same base, intolerance of that which is different . It is just manifesting itself in a different way.

So gays are in a 'bad situation.' Do you know any? Have you spoken to them? The ones I know don't feel they are in a bad situation...they are just frustrated because they don't have the same rights every other American have.

If America went by the way of thinking of you suggest... women would still not be allowed to vote.

People get married for religious reasons, and to start families, neither of which is possible in gay marriage.
