Say one was looking to move to LI..

Where would you suggest they look to buy a house... FH and I are thinking of moving ...well we have decided to do so after the wedding (if there is one). We just wondered what LI was like, the job market looks ok... and we can't rent.. we have 3 dogs.

Aww Jody-kins, as much as I'd love to see you join us here, it's hard as hell to survive for some of us already here.

Before anything, I would look into the job market - see what's out there and where. Then you can decide how long of a commute you want to make which will then help decide which of the (affordable) surrounding towns you want to try for.

Right now we are looking at Florida, NY and back to MA (we could NEVER own a house in MA way to expensive even more so than NY). So we have just been looking if FH ends up getting laid off we will sell and move for sure ut want to have some kind of plan if that happens already in our mind.

Chris is looking at them right now... as well as Maryland and NH we definitely want something close to the ocean.

DH is the Marine Corps and I am a private school teacher, and we make it work. Living on LI is just about budgeting and living within your means. We just bought a house in Island Park and really would never live off the south shore.

When we were looking for a house, we found trulia.com to be the most helpful.

I've lived in Carle Place my whole life and it is the smallest, close knit town and it was great to grow up here. My family and I love it so much that my brother bought a house here with his wife, my sister bought a house here with her hubby and FH and I just bought a house here as well!

LI is a great place to live. BUT the cost of living is very high. I'm not trying to discourage you. My MOH is from upstate NY. After college she moved to LI with me to start a new life and a career. She had a full time job, plus an evening job to make ends meet. Twice she had moved back home because she just can't afford it here. Before you move, I highly suggest you get a job first.
There are rentals that allow dogs. We have 2 dogs and I used to live at a dog friendly community. The place offered a dog run, a pool, gym and balcony. FM me if you want info.

It's expensive here on LI, but if you really want to move here I think it's a great!!! I know an awesome realtor that can help you!!!

LI is a great place to live, There are some affordable towns, the taxes are high, but thats anywhere you go, nassau or suffolk.

I love my town, I love my house, and I am very happy
but i would be happy anywhere as long as i am with DH

Now is the time to buy if you can. One of the lowest priced towns right now is Levittown. It's a Great mostly blue collar neighborhood. it's very family oriented. The houses do not house basements & are generally cape styles.

My Fiance & I just got a house in Jan of this year in East Meadow. We were looking for a year because you can really be picky since the inventory is sooo high. Our taxes are $9500- though. Good Luck to you.

FH and I just bought a house in Valley Stream. Nassau taxes are INSANE. Suffolk is much better in terms of house prices and taxes.

My FH and I just bought a house in Franklin Square and it's the best thing we could have done. The area is great and there is a lot to choose from. We're both bankers and we know that NOW is definitely the time to buy. Good Luck !!

I lived in PA before as long as it is not the sticks I would be ok but 'somebody' wants to be able to drive a couple miles to the ocean and jump in.... but I would so LOVE to live near you!!!

I hope now is... but we have one we have to sell... when we bought it in 2006 it was NOT the time to buy we got in one of those screwy loans and all just to get pushed through and since we were idiots and first time buyers we got kinda screwed on the loan...

I wish I could lie to you and say its easy here but in order to NOT rent you are looking at buying a decent house starting around 450-500k,...Plus the taxes are crazy,. Where are you coming from> I think its just easier to live here when you have grown up here your whole life.
