i also wanted to add..... my boss said this to me the other day

'if a woman is 8 months pregnant and the baby dies in her.... she goes to the DR. and has what is called an abortion..... if they make abortion illegal, they are making that illegal'

Actually, my cousin unfortunately was just in this situation and it is not called an abortion it is called a DNC. Basically it is the same, but since the fetus is already dead that does put it in a different light.

its the PROCEDURE though .... no matter what its name, fetus 'living' or not, it would be outlawed as well..... i feel its good she had that option.. can you imagine if she just had to wait til it wanted to expel itself?
...sorry to hear this btw, that is very sad & unfortunate....

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..

i think theres one VERY important thing that makes people view 'pro-life' or 'pro-choice' differently....

some people consider a fetus a 'baby' or 'alive'

some people dont. thats where the underlying differnces start

My husband travels to China quite often (he's an importer) and has Chinese partners that reside in China. The reason why so many Chinese leave the country is because of health care. China's sucks. South Korea & Japan's health care is far superior.
So thats teh only reason why they leave..come on now. Thats like saying all immigrant come here to find work..

People have different experiences. Truth is The West is shielded from certain information. Its just like Haitians and Voodoo..many people dont say they are hatian due to the negativity around it..even teh government is trying to downplay it due to the country's image..but that doesnt mean it doesnt happen..

I think your analogy weak and has nothing to do with abortion or non-US adoption which is where I think the China discussion started.

I was not going to comment but I had to set the record straight bc I think that there might be people believe your statement to be true always. Being Haitian does NOT mean you practice voodoo and the people who believe this are just ignorant. It saddens me that there maybe some Haitian people who succomb to narrow minded views. I personally don't know anyone who is embarrassed to say that they are Haitian. If anyone has come across people who are embarrassed of their Haitian hertitage please don't believe everyone feels this way so, let me introduce myself.....I AM HAITIAN AMERICAN and PROUD OF IT.

i was just going to say that Steph i couldnt agree with you more.. people who assume that are just ignorant..........

.........just as people who believe that all women who have abortions are sluts!

I don't think that any abortion ban would make this procedure illegal. it's actually a common procedure that was done before abortions were legal, and will continue to be doen should abortions become illegal once again.

Also, if someone has a miscarriage, ut's technically an abortion, and they can't outllaw that, so just because it's CALLED the same thing doens't mean it is, and I don't think anyone is looking to outlaw dnc's any time soon. Its actally anecessary medical procedure for women in that situation and often for women who have miscarried (which is 30% of all known pregnancies). So I think your boss is either mistaken, or trying to spread propaganda

i dont know... just relaying what i heard. but i'm glad you ladies had some facts .. i ididnt know all of this! see how LIW teaches us!

IMO if there was EVER to be some time where abotion were to become illegal again i feel that WOMEN and women only should have a national vote..... NOT the governement.... does anyone agree with this?

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..

That's totally true. I think it's really unfortunate that rich, old, whtite men have most of the contorl over what women of all ages, races and colors (incidentally primarily poor, young and minority women) are doing and the tough decisions that women can only make. There's society, there's legal and there's illegal, but in the end the tough decison comes down to the woman. Where are those rich white old men then? Are they there to offer guidenace and support? How about money to raise the baby? I really doubt that roe v. wade will be overtunred, but as I've said before if it were, I think women would all stand up together and heads would spin. I don't think we'd stand for them taking those rights away. And I am really scared of which way this country is going b'c of recent politcla events and the onservative tilt we're on..but I don't think there's any way they'
d get away with that

I am pro life...but I just can't see legislating against it. For the most part countires where abortion is legal have fewer abortions than where it's illegal. I think where we have it wrong is this abstinence only sex education crap. So many people get pregnany because they just don't ahve the information they need. Knowing about condoms isn't going to make you any more likely to have sex. NOT knowing, or holding on to an unrealistic (for most) notion of chastity IS dangerous, because it leads to people not being prepared when they eventually do have sex. i think the best way to have fewer abortions is to

1) EDUCATE people about birth control so they won't have as many unplanned pregnancies when they do have sex

2) TEACH self esteem building and relationship skills. Teach kids what relationships are like and what the dangers are emotionally, physically, etc..so they cna be prepared for things like pressure to have sex, and various forms of abuse

3) END the social stigma on unwed mothers. I think many women who do get pregnant without wanting to would keep their babies if they didn't have to eb so afraid of the looks they'd get. I know some people who lost their jobs over an unplanned pregnancy and that's just terrible.

We live ina society that tries to tell kids not to have sex, but throws them into a sex filled world completely unprepared for how to decide when to ahve sex and how to protect themselves when they do have sex, and that ostracizs unwed mothers who choose to carry their babeis to term. it really seems like a climate that FOSTERS and ENCOURAGES abortion..

I mean, i believ abortion is wrong, but I think we'll do more to rpevent it in other ways than by making it illegal. If no one needed an abortion, it wouldn't matter if it's legal or not.....

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..

For the Record ......

yes, i had an abortion a few months ago, But NO, i'm not a slut... and YES, i was on birth control...... No, i'm not happy about it, YES, i regret it at times

would i have another? no
do i feel i made the right decision? yes
if i went back to the day of my abortion now, would i still go through with it? i dont know

i found out that i was pregnant @ 6 weeks... i didnt have an enormous time to think about my decision either.... i knew if i was to have the operation i wanted it RIGHT away, BEFORE it started to develop, so to any one who HASNT been put in the unfortunate position, please know it is so NOT an easy decision. it was the hardest decision i ever had to make. i dont wish it on anybody.

I wanted to say thank you for opening yourself up and telling everyone your personal experience. It's often something people find hard to talk about with family/friends, let alone strangers.

I am pro-choice but I have a very good friend who is pro-life and she said something that knocked me off my feet:

I am pro-life for myself but pro-choice for everyone else.

Wow! I have lots of respect for her and so I think that our understandings allow us to push past the difference of opinion.

I think a lot of people feel that way...Most women cannot imagine being in the position of needing an abortion but will state it's the right of every woman to have one safely if that's the decision she makes.

I am pro-choice. Honestly I don't think I myself would have an abortion, but I believe every other woman has the right to choose what they want to do with their body.

I think a lot of people share your friend's view. But, here is why I disagree with this view:

If you are truly pro-life, you believe (in fact, you know) that abortion ends a human life. This view is consistent with every text book on biology and embryology because all of these books will tell you that human life begins at conception. I have yet to see a serious pro-abortion advocate argue biology/embryology and that an unborn baby is just a clump of cells. Clearly, that is not the case. (And, if anyone wants to point me to scientific literature that indicates the contrary, I would be interested in seeing it.)

So, since abortion ends a life, how can you advocate allowing others to determine if they want to take a life? What if-- back in the day-- abolitionists said: 'I myself could never own a slave, but if Mr. X down the block wants to own one, who am I to stop him? It is his choice.'

Clearly, such a position would be a cop out and would disregard the rights of fellow humans. Likewise, the practice of abortion does not respect the life of the unborn. The pro life movement seeks to be a voice for the voiceless...the unborn.

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..

What's interesting to me is how people's views change based on the position they are in. Ask a mother who had a miscarriage at 7 or 8 weeks if her baby did not have a life or was not a life form and she'll tell you how much that baby lived and how they baby was a life.

But yet as a country we're ok with an abortion at that age because we consider it to not take a life form at that point.
