Serious Explanation Wanted

Original post by Kel

Can someone tell me how Bush allowed such a liberal death penalty in Texas, but is against abortion. Now, please don't come after me by saying abortion is an innocent life, and the death penalty is for cold criminals.

I'd just like some reasonable answers as to how Bush can think it's okay to put someone to death but refuse abortion. Afterall .. who are we (in the general sense) to say someone did something so wrong they should die for it??

I'm really confused on this.

I have read that it actually does cost more to house a criminal for life than to put someone to death.

And someone said that they dont consider a fetus a life but some people do and they consider that fetus an 'innocent' life.

Personally, I am pro-choice up to 24 weeks (against partial birth abortions) but never really took a stance on death penalty. I think that if someone close to me was murdered I might want the person who did it, killed. I can't say until it actually happened to me. Most people on death row are there for a reason.

I guess in a way it is hypocritical in both scenarios. It's just that killing a fetus who had no say in some people's eyes can be considered worse than taking a life of a murderer who chose to commit heinous murder so I dont really feel sorry for them.

For people who are religious, I don't think religion is based on who's innocent and who's not. Either way, murder is wrong in whatever scenario. I think it's crap for them to say abortion is wrong because it's a life, but then say the death penalty is okay because in religion, isn't it said that we are supposed to turn the other cheek? Not that I would personally think that way, but if people are going to believe in what their religion stands for, I don't get how they can feel it's right to kill someone no matter what they've done.

My understanding of the death penalty:

- It costs tax-payers more money to apply the death penalty than keep them in prison for life.

I think this is one debate I want to stay out of but just in reference to the above, it only costs more (at times) for the death penalty because of the number of appeals a prisoner has before he or she is put to death. And if you ask most people who are for the death penalty, they have too much time and too many appeal opportunities. So, this logic doesn't fly with pro-death penalty people.

This is in no way an endorsement of or against the death penalty, just a sharing of information. Not getting involved in this one!

Umm....Your first mistake was putting 'reason' and 'george bush' in the same sentence

Re: Serious Explanation Wanted

I am pro-life and against the death penalty. Just my own views.

But my reason for being against the death penalty is because there have been select times in history where someone has been wrongfully convicted of a crime and only after have they been sentenced to death, has it been found they were innocent. Maybe that accounts for less than 10 cases in history...but its still not a flawless system. I can't justify it i guess..

BUT....I don't know what my stance would be if god forbid something happened to someone I love. I'm sure I'd want that person put to death..in both case...(abortion/death penalty) it really is so hard to say what I'd feel. I honestly don't know.

I think it's crueler to sentence a criminal to life in prison with no chance for parole than the death penalty. Let them life their live in prison and suffer for it. Being put to death is a quick end to their suffering.

I agree

then as i stated above...if death is the easy more desirable way out...why does 99% of the criminals out there who have the possibility of getting the death sentence exhaust every means to get out of it?

Why would anyone facing the death penalty think it is the easy way out? Man has a natural inclination to survive, even if it means living the rest of your life in prison.

Well violet said that keeping someone in jail for the rest of their life is the worse of the two options. And i was responding to that..If it was much worse then why would someone object to the death option...
OF COURSE it is human nature to survive..and obviously the more desirable option...that is MY point.
Which is why i like the death option...because in essence putting them to death is the worse of the two not rotting in jail..which is why i like that option..

Well, I guess that's just me. I would rather have a quick death than spend the rest of my life in prison.
