Can someone tell me how Bush allowed such a liberal death penalty in Texas, but is against abortion. Now, please don't come after me by saying abortion is an innocent life, and the death penalty is for cold criminals.
I'd just like some reasonable answers as to how Bush can think it's okay to put someone to death but refuse abortion. Afterall .. who are we (in the general sense) to say someone did something so wrong they should die for it??
I'm really confused on this.

I can see what you mean heilda but I think the difference is that one has actually done something to another person..the other is pure innocence..now would I be the one to put a person to death..no I couldnt personally do it..nor abortion.. I may say I want it but honestly I dont know what i would want happen unless I was faced with a scenario that needed me to make a choice. I hope none of us ever have to face it.

I think it's crueler to sentence a criminal to life in prison with no chance for parole than the death penalty. Let them life their live in prison and suffer for it. Being put to death is a quick end to their suffering.
I agree

I miss wrote' what i stated above isn't the way that republicans look at abortion...It is the way Pro-choice, liberals do.
Obviouly republicans believe that the fetus at any giving period of gestation is a human being, an innocent one at that.. Criminals aren't innocent...
But i see the point!

I agree
then as i stated above...if death is the easy more desirable way out...why does 99% of the criminals out there who have the possibility of getting the death sentence exhaust every means to get out of it?

Why would anyone facing the death penalty think it is the easy way out? Man has a natural inclination to survive, even if it means living the rest of your life in prison.

Re: Serious Explanation Wanted
Okay .. so I'm still not understanding any better than when I started this thread.
I can understand how one is considered innocent, and the other evil .. so I guess that would be Bush's logic???
And I know the death penalty has been around for a long time .. but didn't the rate of death penalty application increase significantly under Bush??
My understanding of the death penalty:
- It costs tax-payers more money to apply the death penalty than keep them in prison for life.
- The death penalty is not a crime deterrent.
But I'm still not getting from a religious aspect how it would be okay to apply the death penalty .. and Bush has been criticized for using a religious foundation in this election .. I'm just trying to understand what his line of reasoning on this could be .. it wasn't to start a debate on the death penalty.

As someone said you provided a possible answer to your own question. And yes the death penalty surely increased under him.
Some countries really do live under an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth philosophy...I bet stuff like stealing would go down if people could lose a hand.

Re: Serious Explanation Wanted
I think the idea behind it is simple and you answered your own question - that using the death penalty is a last measure against criminals who are not able to be rehabilitated - it sends a strong message that murder and capital crimes will not be tolerated.
Whereas, pro-lifers or anti-abortionists believe that life is formed when conceived so that having an abortion is killing an innocent life. The fetus never made any decision and cannot protect itself. Whereas the criminal on death row made his own decisions and is being punished for his/her actions.
What about people who are pro-choice and anti-death penalty? What does that say about them?

That they are as mixed up as those that are Pro-life and for the death penalty.

Because it is kinda hypocritical to be for life in one way and against it in another.

Re: Serious Explanation Wanted
I think the reason why the death penalty has not been a deterrent is because it is not enforced. If it were enforced without 100 years of appeals, then I think it would be a deterrent.
I understand some innocent people have been killed, so I believe in the death penalty for those where guilt or innocence is not a question - meaning, if a killer confesses, or its on video, etc.
I do not think it's more 'humane' than prison - imagine the fear in knowing that your death is imminent. If you were given a choice between life in prison or death, which would you choose? I'd choose life in prison so I could at least exercise, watch TV, read books, study, write letters to friends and family, eat 3 meals a day, and not ever have to worry about paying a bill for the rest of my life.

It's really simple. Pro-choicers do not consider the fetus a life until a certain point, and abortion is only legal on a fetus up to a certain point. A girl 7 or 8 months pregnant cannot get an abortion, and I understand why since the fetus has pretty much developed.
I see nothing wrong with a fetus being terminated in the early stages, but I do see something wrong with murdering an adult, no matter what he/she has done. This person has lived a life, and it's not in anyone's hands to say who should live and who should die. If a crime was that bad, they should never get parole because a common case with sex offenders is that they get released and will commit the same crime again. The judicial system has to have stronger punishments.
It really burns me that people who are against abortion will have no problem saying that a person should die from the death penalty.

they are both against the Bible- aborition & death penalty- if they are that religious- they should know only God could judge.
They are hypocrites.

Re: Serious Explanation Wanted
I have read that it actually does cost more to house a criminal for life than to put someone to death.
And someone said that they dont consider a fetus a life but some people do and they consider that fetus an 'innocent' life.
Personally, I am pro-choice up to 24 weeks (against partial birth abortions) but never really took a stance on death penalty. I think that if someone close to me was murdered I might want the person who did it, killed. I can't say until it actually happened to me. Most people on death row are there for a reason.
I guess in a way it is hypocritical in both scenarios. It's just that killing a fetus who had no say in some people's eyes can be considered worse than taking a life of a murderer who chose to commit heinous murder so I dont really feel sorry for them.
It is interesting to note that there are passages in the 1st testament of the Bible that allow an eye for an eye (capital punishement by stoning or other ways in ancient times) in certain instances like murder, incest even bestiality but never allows for the killing of an unborn child. The modern Catholic church doesnt follow it now and tries for a more all around pro-life stance.
