Seriously - what type of dog food?
I am driving myself nuts with this!!Breeder told me to feed her IAMS puppy.
First vet visit - told to switch to Large Breed Puppy food.
Second vet visit - told Wellness is really good.
Now I need to get her new food and I am all tossed about what to get.
One Pet store says Nutro
Another says Wellness or Merrick.
Please help!!

Re: Seriously - what type of dog food?
dude.. I KNOWWWWme and FH were walking arouns the pet store for like an HOUR!!!!
We decided to try science diet only because we were reading the ingrediants annd they seemed to have less 'artificial' stuff in it. My parents have my rottie on Nutro and she does great. It is soooo confusing.

Re: Seriously - what type of dog food?
just like food you would feed yourself, read the ingredients....Dog food lists ingredients (like people food) based on most plentiful ingredients first. The first ingredient listed should be a protein source. It shouldn't be corn.
A whole source of protein (such as Bison, Beef, Chicken, etc) is better than 'meat by product' or 'beef by product'. By product is pretty gross- all the parts of the animal that we wouldn't EVER eat (hooves, eyes, spinal cords, etc).
Also, whole grains are better for dogs than white rice or corn (just like people).
Food with brown rice, barley, etc are better for your dog than foods with white rice and corn.
Wellness, Merrick, Nutro and Solid Gold are all good types of dog food. I feed my dog Solid Gold but have fed her Wellness (we switched off of it b/c the kernels were way to big for her tiny mouth).
She does eat teh Merrick wet food though.

Re: Seriously - what type of dog food?
like Sassy said.NO 'by-product or 'meal' (corn meal, etc.)
IAMS is pretty much a HUGE no-no in my book.
Wellness is EXCELLENT. its a tad bit more $, but def well worth it.

Canidae is another high-quality food to consider. Satchmo is on that right now.

Re: Seriously - what type of dog food?
Jen,Where are you located? Pets Supplies Plus in East Northport carries a lot of the really good brands, but they don't carry Wellness. I know the Particular Pet in Huntington carries Wellness.

Re: Seriously - what type of dog food?
jen.. im sure you can find Wellness somewhere. perhaps at one of those tiny pet supply stores. they tend to care more about healthy foods. def switch him off science diet. its crap. the very first two ingrediants are what you want to stay away from
