since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

Original post by yabbobay

our president is against it...and he says that you are too...what is your opinion?

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

Absolutely!! Marriage is about committing yourself to one person for the rest of your life. If you love someone enough to do that, no matter what the gender, you should be allowed to marry.

wow...sorry I was the author and wasn't around today to see this thread spin (I posted it last night)

I just want to thank everyone for expressing their opinions...I read the whole thing and I think both sides (minus a little frustration here and there) were very fair and honest and truthful...

I think telling certain people that they are not allowed to get married is discrimination in its purest form...

and I think if states think that same-sex marriages are legal - then they should be legal...imagine being married in NY...but when you went into NJ you were not...

I think it comes down to state rights...we (the states) should not give the fed govt too much power...this is a state issue...bush should stay out...

Personally, I think if you want to get married to your dog it should be allowed

The reason the old govt is so against it is because of the almighty freaking $$$$$$$

Companies will complain about giving out insurance money, the social security system doesnt want to pay out more than they have to etc

So in the end its not about 2 people in love its about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If it is 2 consenting adults...you should be able to get married. PERIOD. BUT TO ONE PERSON. As much as i believe in 'love is love' ...well we have a lot of sick people in this beautiful county and i think that statement can be misinterpreted. I know I am getting off the topic somewhat. I just think that Love is Love.. but should be for those who are consenting adults (2 adults).

Okay, my last post about this and it goes back to MizStinker and her personal experience -

No one can truly say what others should do or pass judgment on them without ever living a day in their shoes. Straight people telling gay people must be the most hurtful and sad thing to go through. I can't imagine what it's like - b/c I'm not gay and never lived through it.

I wonder how many of you who voted no would change their minds if they actually experienced the hatred and discrimination that gay people face on a daily basis and the feeling that the government can control who you can and can't marry must just be unbearable at times. How are we ever going to teach our children to appreciate the differences among us if we as adults can't?

I agree one hundred percent...pure racism in it's worst form...
My friends and relatives that are homosexual have been spit at (in their face) attacked, degraded, and verbally abused...
When will all this hatred stop?

No one asked you to explain, I don't get your point!!

THIS IS what I mean you consider this NICE

what we're (me and shelyzp) meant is that you had already stated that you had personal and religious beliefs as to why you answered NO, which is why we didn't need an explanation from you..

and Mizstinker.. thank you for sharing that with us!!

Not for nothing, but how do you know what kind of hatred and/or discrimination I may or may not face on a daily basis? Regardless that has no bearing on my answer. Laws are laws...However, the squeaky wheel gets the oil...

And does that mean we just have to accept these laws our politicians but into effect, without question.

SO, I guess that Women should not have been given the right to vote, and african americans should still be allowed to be kept as slaves. What shoud they have done, moved out of the country.
