since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

Original post by yabbobay

our president is against it...and he says that you are too...what is your opinion?

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

and I guess we should still allow people to come here from different countries and disappear to then blow us up....Slavery was brutal and i dont wish that upon anyone but there are other matters involved in same sex marriages other then pure discrimination....

What does terrorists have to do with gay people getting marreid???

I said nothing about allowing terrorists into the US, I said that laws should not be followed because a politician thinks it is a good law. Why was it okay to question laws regarding slavery and to give african american equal rights, but this does not apply for individuals that are gay?

whoa...are you comparing allowing same-sex marriages to 9/11? I think that is a little harsh...JMHO

Here's a wake-up call..the US is a melting pot of cultures.. most people have ancestry from OTHER countries.. it's very rare to find someone who is 5th 6th generation American..

Peewee, I don't think that your response to Erica was called for. You have kept this post going, and injected more drama than necessary, all in the name of people attacking your viewpoint. But you just attacked Erica for stating that this country has had some bad laws in the past. Your implication that she wants some liberal president to throw the country in upheaval is unfair. I am a liberal and your statement is, I think, offensive and also somewhat ignorant of the political process. Whenever a new president is elected, especially if we are talking about a new political party, that president repeals old laws, passes new ones and brings in a new cabinet to implement his policies. Bush did, as do all presidents.

If you want to engage in intelligent debate, then I applaud you. But your unpunctuated ramblings seem to be geared towards no more than creating hostility when there is none.

I can understand and respect that you do not want to be made to feel that you have to defend your position. But please extend the same curtesy to the rest of the ladies and stop demanding that they defend theirs.

It takes people standing up and questioning the laws to make a difference

Don't worry. The squeaky wheel gets the oil...

I am not sying it is a comparison .....once again you are taking things out of context i am just saying laws are laws ............And that was an example i used its like we like the laws that suit us and rebel against the ones that dont suit us I was always taught cant have the best of both worlds

I have to agree with this, at least in part...
What will the next law be that people make a stink about changing?

We should rebel against the law we don't like, without rebelling, we would still be a colony of England, women would still not be given the right to vote, and slavery would still be legal.

I mean if you choose to live here these are the laws

The way that this country is set up is that the people make the laws, not the government- the lawmakers are voted in by Americans to best represent the rights of the American public. Not lobbyists, not the religious right. Of course, it does not always work this way, but if we did not question the laws, and push for reform, there would still be slavery, women would have no reproductive rights, etc. Sadly many americans do not vote or do not know what they are voting for, and then seem shocked when our politicians take hard stances on controversial issues.

I wonder how many of you who voted no would change their minds if they actually experienced the hatred and discrimination that gay people face on a daily basis and the feeling that the government can control who you can and can't marry must just be unbearable at times. How are we ever going to teach our children to appreciate the differences among us if we as adults can't?

Not for nothing, but how do you know what kind of hatred and/or discrimination I may or may not face on a daily basis? Regardless that has no bearing on my answer. Laws are laws...However, the squeaky wheel gets the oil...

I still want an answer to this.

thats the great thing about our constitution...it is extremely flexible to change with society...most modern democratic nations have looked at our constitution to copy or just to take ideas from...

I am so sorry that you are discriminated against...is there anything that I can do...write letters, etc to stop this?

But isn't that the beauty of living in a democracy? Having the RIGHT to challenge those laws that may be antiquated and repressing? I, for one, believe in excersising our right to freedom of speech and without that right, we might as well be living under a tyranical regime for that matter.

If you took everyone in America that was unhappy with a law and made changes to or eradicated that law, we'd have no laws left.

There might be the reason for the confusion with what you type, and people not understanding the point you are trying to make.
