since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

Original post by yabbobay

our president is against it...and he says that you are too...what is your opinion?

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

Not for nothing, but how do you know what kind of hatred and/or discrimination I may or may not face on a daily basis? Regardless that has no bearing on my answer. Laws are laws...However, the squeaky wheel gets the oil...
I still want an answer to this.

I am so sorry that you are discriminated against...is there anything that I can do...write letters, etc to stop this?

Not the point. But thanks.

I am not sying it is a comparison .....once again you are taking things out of context i am just saying laws are laws ............And that was an example i used its like we like the laws that suit us and rebel against the ones that dont suit us I was always taught cant have the best of both worlds

I have to agree with this, at least in part...
What will the next law be that people make a stink about changing?

But isn't that the beauty of living in a democracy? Having the RIGHT to challenge those laws that may be antiquated and repressing? I, for one, believe in excersising our right to freedom of speech and without that right, we might as well be living under a tyranical regime for that matter.

If you took everyone in America that was unhappy with a law and made changes to or eradicated that law, we'd have no laws left.

But if there is a majority, then it should be challenged.

I will explain the attack since you obviously don't understand the implication of your own words. You asked a question and then you immediately answered your own question as if that was the obvious answer and that it was obviously wrong.

The reason that I enjoy intelligent debate is that I seek other viewpoints in effort to keep myself inform and educated. And every once in a while, I change my mind. You have not treated any single person on this thread with an ounce of respect unless they agreed with you 100%.

I think you have gotten yourself in over your head on a topic that you are extremely uninformed about. All you can offer this discussion is your, as yet, unsupported opinion that gays should not be permitted to marry. Period. Please don't take that as an invitation to support your opinion because at this point, I really don't care. But when the conversation began to shift in an entirely different direction (the process of changing laws), you had to drag us right back to here.

I understand what you are saying, but why institute a democratic government if the laws are designed to be unflexible? By nature, our constitution is designed to be ammended and changed as the times we are living in change.

And, obviously it is not as simpllistic as one person being unhappy with a law in order to bring about a change. It takes years of lobbying and fighting and voting to ammend the constitution or bring about any change in laws or government.

Again people are misunderstaning. If you think I mean something bad ask me not in a gressive post. I would be more then happy to let you know. I will make a conscious effort not to punctuate incorrectly. See I can listen, I just don't respond well to a verbal assault. Yes VERBAL ASSAULTS were made.

Verbal assaults were never made, you were the one making them, by telling people to get over themselves.

Re: since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

I was discussing this topic with my dad last night, this thread in particular. He reminded me of something so very true - people don't pay attention to history. 'Marriage' in particular has evolved over time - it was not always the institution it is today. It was something created to empower men - give them control, dare I even say ownership, over their wives and children. (there was more, but I forgot ) Is this what it's about today? No, not here at least. Did someone have a problem with the change? I'm very sure of it. Change is inevitable. Not everyone likes it, but you get your cherries with pits included.

And our government was designed so that when the legislature passes laws the people don't agree with, the people have the power to change it.

I was raised that is my RESPONSIBILITY to do my part, not just to accept what is handed to me. This country did not begin with the idea that we would sit back idly and accept government as it is. For that, as someone mentioned, we might as well have never had a revolution. We have a voice and we should use it for what we believe in - all sides of the issue.

God bless the men and women that went before us and challenged the laws. I would hate to think of how limited my choices would be if I didn't have the right to vote, own property, educate myself, marry when I wanted to, etc.

I feel sorry for anyone that has not learned to question laws. Blind adherence without knowledge is not the American way.

peeweesgirl, I was responding to your post, that is why I quoted you. I was telling you at no point were you ever verbally attacked, and that you were the one to do the attacking.

Sorry if that was hard for you to understand!!!!

Edited for spelling.

I think THAT'S the problem.. you're LISTENING when you should be READING..

no one assaulted you verbally, you just didn't like to what you were *listening* so you took it personal and got your panties in a bunch..

(before I leave )

I remember in a class I took on american lawyers...there was a woman who wanted to become a lawyer and her husband was very open to this as well (late 1800s)...but since her husband was already a lawyer..and she was essentially Mrs John Smith...there couldn't be 2 lawyers...since they were considered one person....

also Carol Moseley Braun mentioned in a debate that her uncle was in an interracial marriage and that was considered illegal in many states...but now that notion seems rediculous...i hope we look back in a few years and wonder how we could ever outlaw same sex marriages...

JMHO as I run out the door
